I been through this in my marriage. Gave him time to sort out his issues with money, didn't work. I got a second job, saved what I could and filed for divorce. My husband wasn't a bad guy but he was completely selfish and didn't care if we lost our home or the security for our children. I later found out he had a gambling habit. A marriage should have trust and the desire to contribute to the happiness and security of the family unit. When one is selfish and doen't care about the other and makes their life worse with reckless acts...that is not a good marriage and if they dont change after some time, you need to quit.

I make $65,000 per year and have the bonus potential of $10,000 to $20,000 per year, but it’s sporadic and can’t really be quantified in the monthly budget. Running numbers it’s pretty tight and there really isn’t a lot of money left over. Are there a couple of tangible things you can share that would be helpful for the sole income producer to know or think about? Honestly, it’s a bit frightening to go to one income and as a man, rightfully so, I feel a lot of responsibility to produce.

My husband cannot handle money at all. After 34 years we separated for 13 years because of the problems, including gambling and bankruptcy. We now live together again but it was on condition that I handle all the money. He had to agree to this to come back home and I enforce it. It is the only way I could live with him. We are both retired now but needed to combine our money in order to have enough. I implemented Dave Ramsey's baby steps, now on step 3, and things are much better. He has not been very on-board with me, but it has been a year, and he is appreciating what I am doing. This lady's story reminded me of my own. Caller: my husband a liar he’s bad with money he selfish and self-centered.
Dave: are you in a good church?
Me: I guess Dave is a little naïve when it comes to churches. I have been in church all my life since I was 13 I am now 36. Churches Don’t teach on finances, family, Health. Or mental health. Sometimes churches are actually the problem because their asking Broke people to give money. And often times pastors cannot speak on these subjects Because their family life is trash they are bad with the churches money and suffering from mental health issues themselves. Often times you receive better counseling outside of the church.

He asks if they're in a "good" church because a good church is nothing like you described and does provide help for families. They're out there, there just aren't very many of them. A lot of churches are struggling financially and get caught up in that aspect of it.

I’m a woman and I am confused as to why Dave went so soft on this caller. Had this been a man, Dave would have blamed him for leaving it up to his wife to handle all the finances. It should work both ways. Just as men shouldn’t leave it up to their wives to handle the finances, neither should women leave it up to their husbands. It needs to be a joint effort. I think Dave suggesting that this woman is in a “financial abuse” situation is way over the line.
This caller has put herself in a vulnerable situation by staying at home, allowing her husband to be the only breadwinner, and on top of it, allowing him full control over their finances. All this, even though he has historically been very irresponsible. There is no justification for him doing what he has done with money, but she is partially to blame as well for stuffing her head in the sand until now.
I am not trying to judge either of them, as I am sure there are other factors involved that were not mentioned during the call. I hope they can both work together and fix this situation.

Omg I know this video is old but I am so glad I found this. My boyfriend and I are having financial issues. Since I could remember he has always had issues managing his money and I’ve had to help support him. I’m not perfect either, he’s help support me when didn’t have the money but I’ve grown and learned how to manage and organize bills and found a job that would help me get to this point. But all this to say is he still is in the same place he’s been in with not being able to manage his money and he doesn’t fully tell me the whole story when it comes to him being short with the rent and bills. I don’t want to be homeless or behind on bills so I help when I can to cover him or make other arrangements to get extensions but I’m tired of it. He makes these promises that next year he’s gonna be better and pay off this and that and I want to believe him but it’s hard when I’ve seen him create the same patterns. I’m struggling with wanting him to be better at managing his money and me not cover his part of the expenses but I also feel like I have no right to feel that way because he would do it for me if I was short on something.

Also realize that he needs to be responsible with his share of the bills. You are partners which means to do things together like a team. Think of this discussion like you would explain to a colleague that doesn't pull their weight. Makes it less emotional and keeps you from accepting his bs. Harsh but he needs a reality check not the sweet supportive understanding gf. Trust me, you’ll resent that role a few years time if you dont speak now.

A lot of Virginia is suburban DC, where pay is good but rents are high and a lot of jobs require multiple degrees. If he's got a ton of student loan debt and keeps buying cars they can't afford by taking out terrible loans, I could see them being in a very deep hole. Not sure that Dave nailed it, but it's certainly possible.

This is one side of the story. The caller is saying, "I do not earn any money, but I spend money, and we have money problems."
I do not trust that we are getting the full story. If she divorces him while she isn't working, she can yank about $75k per year out of his income in maintenance and support, and leave him with a pittance. If they are in a spending war - she empties the checking account into purses and shoes before the rent is paid - then she can easily cause this kind of situation.

I would not recommend her leaving her husband either.....but I will not give him an ultimatum. Guys with a bit of pride tend to ignore ultimatums. Because he is the one making the money. She needs to direct to him that she knows what he's going through is tough and side that she is willing to help him as long as he is willing to accept her help. She needs to emphasize that shes does not want the family broken over money and that she wants to help him succeed. She needs to give reasonable solutions of examples he has with problems with money rather than "I'm leaving if". He'll be more receptive to let's talk than an ultimatum.

There is nothing wrong or crazy about being a stay at home mom! What is crazy is not knowing your financial situation regardless if you work or stay home. I'm 33 and have been home with our 4 kids for 10 years! I went to college, worked and got married before having kids. I'm no ones beoutch and I'm not a victim. I am all in on the budget and know what's coming and going. If my husband does want to leave, then bye. I worked before he came into the picture making decent money, I could do it again.
You Ladies need to make smart choices before having kids. Being a stay at home mom can either be the biggest blessing for your family or be the biggest regret if you don't plan for your futures.
I love love being home and have no regrets. I truly have found my passion and calling and thankful to have an amazing husband who supports me on this journey.
Don't shade people who make it theirs life work being with their kids.. somewhere out there is people working as childcare givers, nannies and teachers helping educate, mold and keep your kids safe. They just get paid for it.
