My daughter is 17 years old, and she is applying for scholarship. We talked about be aware of not getting into debt for college it is not worth it, you will have to pay all that. There is no use to go college if you are paying all that debt. Be wise

I cry when I spend money...I have money just dont like to spend it..its a nice feeling to not have to check my bank account before buying something..but I always feel sad when I have to spend it. I always check and double check for the best value and cheapest price and make sure I really need something before I buy. I treat myself a few times a year but thats all.

I used to work with a guy who was a Dave Ramsey fan. Although we got along well, he would never go out to eat for lunch, go to the movies or happy hour with me. The only entertainment allowed was to go for a walk. Now I understand.
I knew a lady like that. They took the kids out of private school, moved into tiny cheap rental, sold their expensive cars and bought cheap ones. Spent five years being cheap skates. Now they have a beautiful house, nice but older cars, etc
No debt. She teaches how to use coupons effectively, and she uses a lot of it to give to church and others.

I have run the gamut from not knowing where my next meal is coming from to having so much money I didn't know what to with it. I never once felt "broke" because i shifted my priorities every time. Now at 42, I am "retired." When I had abundance, I made sure to save and invest. I didn't live a lavish life however, I did splurged when the math made sense. When it was famine, I made sure my basic needs were met. The single biggest thing I did was to eliminate debt and not get back into it.
Don't ever go broke, just ACT BROKE so you never have to be ;)
I live paycheck to paycheck, but only because I invest/save most of my paycheck.

I think my family thinks we're broke actually lol I find it funny. We have a savings and pay things in full so it's ok. But let's be balanced and be generous even in our wisdom of saving and investing. ☺ Its easy to get stingy if you don't. 🙄

buddypng31 His company does have a high school curriculum in quite a few high schools around the country. The problem is that most high schoolers can’t apply any of the knowledge they are learning so it goes in one ear and out the other.

My father is frugal and I am the opposite. I always thought my dad never enjoys his life by skipping the luxury when he can afford it but only because of him I am having a good life. After listening to Dave Ramsey, I have realized my dad's perfect and I am going to follow his footsteps

My dad too! He was always saving saving saving, living frugal... always told me to save and think for the future, of course I thought he was nuts! Now I realize he was 1000000% right. He’s retired, collects pension, 2 rents from his tenants and his mortgage is paid and is living THE life.

@@carlitoes3998 started saving at 13 years old. Had 20 grand by 17 years old. Hard work and saving multiplied by 20 years.
The most I can save with my current income is 600 dollars a year so it will take me a long time to reach 250k.

@vulpix I take your point- living in an area of extreme housing prices is difficult. We chose to buy a house that was within our range, but had to sacrifice living near family. Otherwise, we'd be saddled with a mortgage for the rest of our lives rather than buying a house in cash outright, in a nice neighborhood.
Saving money for purchases is great. Just make sure you get your money's worth. Cheap houses can also mean so negative effects, such as being located in a dangerous area and has many damages where the costs is greater than the value.
I'm tired and I don't feel like cooking in my house means we're having cereal. I call it "fend for yourself" night.

I put approx $35,000 away last year for retirement last year and drive a Honda Civic with 220k miles. I plan to retire at 55 and keep conservative lifestyle.

I read his book , applied his lessons and now I can afford to work part time to balance my work life and family life. Paid off all my debt except for bal on my car! It feels great!!!!

I was thinking of paying off my car and buying a new one right after because I really fell in love with a new car I've seen.
Watching this helped me decide to keep my current car. I mean, I KNEW that's the right thing to do, but in this materialistic world it's easy to fall into the consumerist trap.
Yea that's how I feel, no more Payments after mine is paid off.
My car is 16 years old, I baby it and just need minor repairs here and there. My car looks good yet, runs good. No car payments. I'm starting to think of ways to save for a new one. I do NOT want a car payment ever again. I will get a new one soon, but we'll make sure I have funds to do so.

My spouse is a high income earner. One income household. We are 33. And we have about 150,000 in assets.
We own a home with mortgage payments. Other than that, we have no debt. We drive old cars. We have no payments on anything than our regular bills and even our bills are very minimal. I don't subscribe to a bunch of things. By the end of this year we will have more than 200k in assets.
While friends are taking nice vacations, driving new cars, eat out and go out for entertainment; we as a family choose to stay home in evenings, chill, eat at home and enjoy simplicity. It's easy for a stay home mom to go out and want to spend but I sit my butt at home unless I'm going out to volunteer or meet with a friend for coffee. I can't wait to pay off our home and be super wealthy before we're 40!
Edited to add: in our 20s we made stupid decisions. We learned from that and became very frugal and pray about every big purchase.

Just dont forget to live! Life is not all about savings all your income for retirement...
We have also made stupid things in our 20s, but became mature during the years when raising our own family.
We also live frugal, and try to pay off all our debts to end of 2018. The mortgage should be paid for less than 3 months, I hope. We also drive old cars, pay all bills on time, not going out and don't travel during the weekends. Those are temporary sacrifices whose worth in long term. We pays everything by cash or debit card. The only thing which we don't save is healthy food, we prefer quality food, than junk food.
Next step is building a legacy and wealth.

You would have more of what you wanted if you utilized all the resources available to you, including welfare if you qualify for it. Use it to save your hard earned money and then get off of the system. If you’ve paid taxes in your life, you deserve a piece of the pie when times get hard. Don’t let pride get in your way.
Good for you! I know folks say to take advantage of the system, but your self-respect is worth loads more than any food stamps will ever be. The system is there for those who NEED it, not those who can do it themselves and are proud to do so, regardless of income level. You’re amazing!

I was $56k in debt in the beginning of 2018, as of 10/27/2018 I became debt free and now at 11/6/2018 I already have 4k in my savings and growing. Thanks Dave for sharing your wisdom on youtube.

@@bigshoe84 the USA will never get out of debt. The root of the problem is the so called 'Federal Reserve System' which is NOT part of the Federal Govt, it has no reserves and it is not a 'system'. It is a fraud. To put it even more starkly: The Federal Reserve Bank is controlled by a group of PRIVATE BANKERS, and NOT the Federal Govt. The people who control our currency and our money supply are PRIVATE BANKERS. Think about that. Read the book 'The Creature from Jekyll Iskand' for more on the utter fraud that is 'The Fed'.

I can relate to Ramsey, I got my real estate license and started selling houses at 18yrs. Bought my first investment duplex at 19, at 21 I have several rental properties and a big 4bed house in a gated community. I had brand new luxury cars, boats and spent money like it grew on trees. I was operating on a very fragile and dangerous system.
9/11 attacks impacted the market and my income, tenants and rents prices dropped. I had a fourplex that had a fire and was heavily damage. Requiring all 4 tenants to vacate. The insurance company didn't cover 'loss of rents'. Eventually I couldnt pay the mortgage on an empty building that had no equity in it. I DIDN'T have an emergency fund, I used expensive financing and subsequently went broke, considered bankruptcy and mentally suffered a big hit.
When many would've quit, I started all over again. I love the business, learned from my mistakes and many years of hard work to get back on top. I now have my highest net worth at 36 and increasing.
Don't borrow money unless you absolutely have too, pay it sooner than later, save and don't spend beyond your income ratios and you'll be fine.

22 years old I suffered a ruptured appendix that was misdiagnosed for a month and I ended up spending a week in the hospital and ended up covered in debt. 10 months later I have one medical bill left and I should be debt free in 2 months. Couldn't be happier to have my health and my financial freedom.

I am 81 years old. When I was 12 I had a paper route that paid me $7 a week. That was a lot for a 12 year old kid. I have not looked back since. I never went to collage and my retirement income is double my expenses. I own my own home and I am debt free. It was not that easy but it was not that hard either.

I'm in the same position but I branched off my dads business and we ended up closing down my dads business and put money and resources in mine because it was making 3x's more money than his. My only advice for is to be innovative and help out your family business as much as you can.

I’m watching this from the U.K. - some of the terms are different, but the principles are universal - your income is your income, live within your means - treats needs to be paid for IN CASH and whatever you earn, put something aside for a rainy day. Dave talks about “big hat, no cattle” My English granny used to say “fur coat, no knickers”.

Yussef Saber That isn’t true, and just what credit card companies want you to believe so you get one. There are other ways to build credit without a credit card ya know that don’t involve owning one. I don’t plan to own one if I can help it and I’m currently still building my credit score.
What if you have a credit card but don't perceive it as credit, rather you never spend what you don't have. In my mind, the number on my credit card is in no way disassociated with the number on my debit card. I still live frugal, save a bunch, rack up points and build credit score. Using fire for its benefits rather than playing with fire.

Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got to talking about investment and money. I started investing with $150k and in the first 2 months, my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and get more interesting. So many young people like myself buy stuff we dont need to look cool. I’d rather my bank account be fed, than my ego.
I started the Dave Ramsey plan two years ago. I couldn't save most of my income because I wasn't budgeting and I paid debt for 2,000 dollars. I was still eating out and spending money everyday. Its a learning process but I can now say I love budgeting as much as I like saving and giving. This month I have decided instead of saving 30% of my income I will be saving 60% of my income. I will also budget every month. Pay the same amount at the beginning of the month for necessities. I make 13,000 dollars a year and have 7,500 dollars saved up.

kthename08 Discipline and persistence. Trust me once you save that first emergency fund it will become easier. I also have a notebook that keeps me organized. I'm not debt free yet as I have student loans. This past week I called credit card company to dispute my accounts.

That's the tough part , saving up that $1,000. I've tried several times and when I'm almost there, life throws a health scare for either me or a family member and I have to use that money . I'm glad I had a few extra hundred dollars to take care of things, but I hope the universe takes a break and let me save up the damn $1,000 without major drama interruptions.

I understand that, I've been on baby step one forever also but I'm going to keep pushing until I get it, about to start saving half my paycheck every two weeks because my expenses are still low since I haven't moved out yet ( I hope to do so later this year) and I received a raise last month. In the meantime I'm enrolled in school and looking for better job opportunities lol.

If so it’s probably under $100/ month. My brother works as a caseworker and he said that food stamp amounts have went down drastically in the last 5 years. One person he approved was only eligible for $14/ month basically making it not worth the effort. The days of living off the government is almost over.
Unless you already have a college degree and a job skill, I'd say to use your time now to go to college. My DD had one child at 21 and she got "need based" money.

I only make about 19,000 a year, but I have 7000 in the savings, and zero debt! I paid off my car right when I bought it. Im investing about 100$ a month,and my college classes are being paid for by the military :P

There are a lot of good jobs out there with tuition assistance and other good benefits packages that actively seek veterans. You can make WAY more than $19K/yr. Apply for a big-city municipal position. Apply at railroads. Double, triple, or quadruple your job income and get a good benefits pkg.

If he makes 2500 a month and saves a little over half of it. Which means he lives below his means. Maybe his apartment cost like 500 a month and bills are pretty cheap and he doesn’t do anything else extra which is the only way to save that much. He doesn’t have to live with his parents.

Most of this generations are credit cards, vacations, buying video games, fast foods, high gym membership, half don’t bother going, and expensive cars. I grew up in India, was constantly reminded, “ Never buy anything on loan” Except for a house and medicals. Go to church, do social work and cook most of your meals.
I would literally save all of my money on all of these expenses but since i only have cars as a hobby, I can save out on the rest and use that money to buy the car

I turned 19yo not too long ago and got my first job at a McDonald's. I make around a minimum $340 every paycheck, though atm I'm looking for a second job. I'd honestly rather work at a retail job, it's really hard getting a raise at fast food jobs. I have a little over $3,000 in my savings so far :)

I honestly wish I could’ve had a mentor like Dave Ramsey when I was 18 years old, I’m 23 now with my grandmother and mother both struggling financially and never had a father so I look up to Dave Ramsey and other successful entrepreneurs for motivation and self confidence that I can make it in this world one step at a time. I’m glad god showed me a grandfather I never had to mentor me and show me a path to financial freedom and hopefully showing my own understanding to my parents who were never fortunate enough to have any educational understanding of financial education so I can show them what it takes to achieve it thank you Dave Ramsey.

Draw a graph with your total debt at one end and zero at the other and update it every month. It's nice seeing the line go down towards 0! : D

The sad irony is that im doing pizza delivery to help get more cash to pay for groceries and eliminate my own remaining debt, and yet most of the people ordering pizza are the type that Dave just ranted against. Hopefully that won't be the case with our culture some day.

I started working as a process server to bring in more cash, much like delivering pizza but instead of delicious Italian American food they get a court summons for the debt they haven't paid. I see these people every day, too, it's literally my job to give them court documents for their debt. and they ALWAYS HAVE nicer cars than mine, usually a couple.

The best thing I ever did was work in finance as my first job out of college. The amount of people I met (I managed their accounts/debt) who looked really wealthy but had shed-loads of debt was very eye opening. I'd guess about 20% (max) of the people walking around who seem rich are actually rich. The rest are faking it all the way to bankruptcy. Never compare yourself to 'the average person' you see. It's mostly a huge lie! Recessions are very revealing as they tend to lift the lid off and reveal exactly who the fakers are.
In comparison, I live in 9 year old tattered jeans, old boots, second hand or charity shop clothing and old gold jewellry that I've never bothered to update (I have one set that I've worn every day for the last 20 years). I don't have a spray tan, fake boobs, sports car or mansion. I'm also not on a huge salary. People actually offer me free clothing because they assume I'm poor! But I know for a fact that I'm now wealthier than 90% of other 30 year olds I meet. It's not that I'm massively wealthy, but that the rest of the country is massively in debt!

Yes it does. I am RN and live on half of what I make. I never pay retail, and will shop thrift stores and consignment for quality items only. You don't buy Walmart items in a thrift store . A friend who is also an RN just dropped a couple grand or more on a purse. I don't know Louie and he don't know me, so I will not contribute to the descendants college fund.
