Are tickets for such journeys available for purchase by the great unwashed such as I? And why is the diesel loco there? Surely a monster steamer such as this would have no trouble with only a few wagons????
Public ridership is sometimes available. Most of UP‘s steam excursions are for employees or perhaps people who arrange to have a UP steamer come to a particular locale. It all depends on why or to where a trip is made. A diesel is employed for dynamic braking. It saves on wear and tear. Incidentally, this engine was built to pull 20 “wagons” at 110 mph with no assistance. Today, the engine seldom runs over 60 miles an hour. Again, for longevity.
Doubtful. Best that would happen is it would come through Idaho on it's way to Portland or Seattle. Boise isn't attractive because: a) too little population, and b) the Orchard main is now used for parking box cars out in the boonies and 4014 would back up going from Boise to Nampa as 844 has done twice.
The wye at Orchard is on double track main line. As UP844 was still on the mainline and before it backed up into the way, a freight train was approaching going in the opposite direction. Ed had a loud speaker and used it to warn the crowd of the approaching freighter. UP must have anticipated a possible safety issue with a loudspeaker as standard issue in the cab of large steam powered locomotives. After all, where there is a train with people, an accident is a real possibility. This was the first time I've ever seen a loudspeaker in the years I've ever chased a train.
What the hell happened with ed in this day??? What he was looking at? Why megaphones? The whistle was so strange and lazy, he let the engine slippage, and he was not going fast with the locomotive. For sure this was the most strange day
Good sir. The video portion is nice. Some good camera angles and framing. But PLEASE invest is a wind screen for the microphone. The video is almost unwatchable due to the noise.
I thought about not uploading because of the wind but the long second scene w/ the blowout was just too good not to upload. Please read my rehashed channel page. th-cam.com/channels/zHbqv4wHeRcGlpOHLyCPlA.html
