the good thing for the Vietnamese Pond Turtle is that they do well in captivity, a lof of them for sale from breeders and even in Vietnam there are farms for these guys, still super rare in the wild though it seems.

This place is doing amazing work ...I am an avid supporter of cultural continuation of hunting of wild game as a way of connecting with the heritage of any given people, and with the end of using the animal taken as a food source and NOT for a trophy...I think what you will about this practice but each and everyone of us exist in this world today because of the ancestors we descended from ....the various tribes of hunter gatherers that existed in a state that all of mankind with it’s various races and sub races Down through the generations to where we find ourselves today existed in ...today with so many different ideas about what we should be eating and how we should acquire our food it’s very easy to position oneself On sort of a moral high ground when it comes to such things as hunting wild game for any reason at all ...because of course the facts are that more than likely ,wherever you happen to be in the world there’s not a human being on the planet that MUST kill their own food or even grow it in the form of cultivated vegetation ... and is also easy as we go about our daily grind ,feeling ourselves secure and safe for the most part, to forget that weapons exist in this world that have the ability to fundamentally end civilization on this planet at least as we know it and at which point the surviving members of the human race (should there happened to be any )would find them selves within a generation thrown back in time a thousand years and with only the survival tools pass to them by the last remaining members of our great modern human civilization ...we would be hunter gatherers once again… I don’t mean to get too far off the subject here because the point is these turtles and what the TSA is doing in attempt to sustain and in some cases, literally revive from the brink of extinction and from functional extinction ,species that have been consumed voraciously with no thought to the sustainability of their populations ,the conservation of their kind for future generations or what the world would be like from an eco-impact state of mind without these animals ...make no mistake about it ,whatever you may feel about hunting ,either for good or bad, what has been done to these turtles has nothing in common with what my grandfather did when he taught me to climb a tree stand and to connect with the natural world and to follow in the footsteps of my ancestors by bringing down my first Whitetail deer ...I can tell you with 100% honesty more often than not simply being there in the same space with that magnificent animal was enough for me .I have chosen to keep the safety on and simply watch exponentially more times than I have pulled the trigger ...True hunting is not about a death ...it’s actually about life. So when you hear about a species ,especially one as cool as ANY kind of turtle ,being Pressured to the point of disappearing off the face of the earth for something as useless as the pet trade and as selfish as unchecked use as a food item and even something as culturally significant as traditional Chinese medicine ...it saddens and sickens me to my heart and I simply cannot understand why the use of these animals whether you agree with it or not, would not have been practiced with sustainability and conservation in mind ...why would these animals that are so sought after for various different reasons not be cultivated in a captive breeding farm raised scenario rather than literally eliminating so many wild specimens that the species had no chance to survive it just makes no sense at all
