how does the shifting happen?
There is a cable going to the left side of the middle shaft. I suspect it moves a coaxial shaft to the gear set, engaging different gears into the shaft. (The rest are freewheeling)
@@SW-qr8qe that's correct, manual vehicle transmissions work in a similar way ( they additionally use synchronisation rings)
@@SW-qr8qe That can't be. All of those gears are touching the gear in the next row. This looks like it has no capability to shift
@@OH8EFI It works by changing which pair is coupled to the shaft. Like a manual car transmission.
i agree with "S W" but i want to see the inner workings of the center axle. how is it shifting without binding or grinding?
More of a gear train than a gear box.

A gear box contains a specific type of gear train. Since the gear train is enclosed in a box, it is a gear box.

I can see one of those on a shifter kart, motorcycle or small car. If you can connect this to a 150cc bike or lawnmower engine, you could have something to be proud of.

Pretty much has to come stock on the bike as this won't work with normal hubs. Or buy a pinion compatible frame from scratch

Things like Rohloff exist, but gearboxes like this are much more preferable as hubs are unsprung. There's a reason why MTBs with belt drive and pinion boxes are rolling out.

If you shift you lock a pair of gears to the shaft, the rest is free-wheeling on the shafts. The gears are not connected to each other

Heavy Equipment preferred the Hydrostatic one.
How to shift gears
On the top row of gears. one gear activates out of the row on a sequential way. The cable on the left hand side activates that gear.
I know this wouldn't be cheap and this gearbox is likely the one from the pinion bikes where it's built into the frame but if there's a way to get one of these to use for an adult pedal car project

Effigear v1. Now they have v2 which has inputvand output on same centerline
Constant mesh transmission most standard transmissions work like this. All the gears on the output shaft are fixed on the shaft.

That's only one gear,with many cogs. How does it change gears?
A mechanism in the top shaft that connects only one of the cogs to the shaft. All the rest are freewheeling.
