    www.zazzle.com/store/junius_m... Walk with Junius Maltby from the Medieval times through to Pre-War England (Britain) as we explore the coins, currency, wages, and costs of living in this culturally rich and important land. I am learning about these coins as an American. I had no exposure to British coinage in life. Only a handful of times did I ever even see a Pound coin. Recently a subscriber generously sent me some British coinage. Here I am not infatuated with it all.
    I plan to gather at the very least, an example of each iconic coin from various periods in British history. They can be slicks and merely good condition - the more worn the better! I will know then that the coin extinguished debts numerous times, was carried by many, saved by some and eventually landed on my shelf as a display.
    What an interesting and amazing coinage history there is with these varieties. Perhaps one of the most amazing pieces of information to glean from this video is the incredible value silver held in these time periods. The wages paid in silver and the amount of goods and services able to be acquired with the silver is incredible, as well as the silver gold ratio of which I was already all too familiar (16:1).
    Enjoy the journey and thank you for stopping by!

    TH-cam has begun to assault content creators / youtubers such as myself. Over the last year, videos with "controversial content" which in my case has been videos that question authority, the government or the globalist elites and progressives have seen what little ad money came from them removed and "demonetized permanently" with no recourse. Now you can visit / juniusmaltby or get the Patreon App and look me up and help me become viewer-funded. You may have heard that TH-cam is mass-demonetizing “non-advertiser friendly” videos on channels like mine and tons of advertises are boycotting TH-cam because ads are showing up on "offensive" videos (like mine), resulting in TH-camrs like myself having our earnings cut down to virtually nothing. I never got into the youtube thing to make a penny, however over the last 4 years, having them place some advertisements has helped me out in life. It also keeps my wife off my back as now I can pretend it makes a few bucks every now and then, rather than her just thinking I am over here making videos and talking when I could be doing "more productive" things. I enjoy producing this content, and I will continue to do so whether I am compensated for my time or not. I feel this is a good deed, with a message that must be spread.

    Talked to my buddy today - he sells his pigs ready for slaughter for $230. For mass sales to lots and not produced with the care he does they run about $0.70/lbs. So using the pig-currency-conversion-economic-mechanism-model......a half Crown is roughly $200 bucks today.

    When we used the old money and where the price was say - 1/6d, we`d say one and six, not one shilling and sixpence. Same for other sums. For instance 2/10d was two and ten, not 2shillings and ten pence.

    Darn!!! Even with my modest stack, I would have been living the high life back then 😮 I remember when they were going on about a $15 minimum wage, Peter Schiff showed a meme on Facebook that showed 5 quarters from 1960 that represented minimum wage back then. It pointed out that the silver content in those quarters was worth over $15 and that the problem wasn't the wages, but the lack of real money.

    • @the_real_economics
      @the_real_economics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would just add - lack of real money and on top of that, lack of real economy for which you can exchange that real money. "Economies" of today are busy "creating" inflation "wealth".

    Wow very interesting!! I watched the the whole thing . I have been to England and Scotland and England before several times and absolutely love this information. I recently started buying gold . My first piece was a 1/4 ounce British sovereign from the 1800’s young Queen Victoria . I am wondering whether to buy pre33 or go to strictly British gold... what do you think? Also what is the British currency “red book” you suggest?

    If you paid a carpenter $50,000/yr today with 672g silver(24oz), then silver would have to be $2000/oz.

    • @JuniusMaltby
      @JuniusMaltby  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, great point. Silver is dramatically under valued as of today. Think of the worlds population! Since then it has grown. Silver will one day recover.

    • @meteoman7958
      @meteoman7958 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, silver today is undervalued and gold is, well let's see. A carpenter made 97.5 pounds per year at 50 6 day weeks. In silver that is .8409x97.5x4 = 327.95 ozt of silver = $5,368 @ $16.37.ozt. Silver needs to be $155/ozt. For gold, 97.5x.2354x$1226.40 = $28,147.72 per year. Therefore gold needs to be $2,178 per ozt. And the gold/silver ratio would be 14 to 1. The low ratio is due to the fact that silver coinage did not contain the full value in silver.

    I really enjoyed this....maybe because I come from the UK. I appreciate the work you put into this. Let me give your historic digging a catapult into the here and now. This is totally crazy.....and a reflection of our current times. I live in Brighton (UK), some 50 mins by train from London. I bought my 2 up 2 down property here in Brighton for 58k in 1992. I've added a small extension to the property (adding a third Bedroom) and today my house is valued at 410k!!!!!!! Watching this/your video on UK costs/earnings, there has never been a point in history that has been so crazy. A bubble that needs to pop! Thank you for your work. Mark in the UK.

    If you look at the history of the monarchy in UK, maintenance of the true coinage was the most important thing to the crown. Bad money ruined every country - even Offa knew this and every other sovereign hence. Until Victoria got all the silver back from China....then it was over for true coinage for the commoner.
    I enjoyed a story from the Warder at the Tower who was in charge of the weights and measures exhibits at the keep. Very cool histories about how proper weights and measures were made permanent and where the saying ´´mind your P´s and Q´s´´ which is to mind your Pecks and Quarts, came from. Look it up. Very cool.
    Most Brits do not know what gallons, quarts, bushels and pecks are even though they invented them! We still use those measures here in the US.
    Oh, yeah. Vauxhall - so you can fit on the carriageway!
    Glad I rented a Mazda.
    Good Luck and May Your Dow Never Jones.

    hey Junius, long time viewer. 17 y.o
    I hear you talking a lot about staying away from the stock market saying you could lose money. I respect your opinion greatly and abide by some of your rules religiously, but don't you think putting your money into a vanguard low to medium risk fund is much more profitable. Now I know you stack for reasons other than profit. Take the extra money you make in the market and out that into metals, or grow to a point where you can live off of that money forever. That being, gold truly should only be bought when your ready to retire. Now, I want to keep my portfolio at around 10 percent gold... but that's simply to hedge against an apocolipse. Thank you for reading. -jason.

    • @JuniusMaltby
      @JuniusMaltby  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey excellent points Jason! You are young and could definitely benefit from some gains made in the markets. Please do not think I would hold that against you in any way. I encourage you to explore some good options in there and try it out if that is something you are wishing to do and manage. Keep an eye on it, manage it and pull it if they look like they are getting ready to take it all! The fact you are thinking these things now, means you are ahead already. BE DEBT FREE, stack some metal, gamble what you want and see where you end up. Above all - being a truthful and good human being is more important than any of it. Thanks for being a part of the channel and for a thoughtful honest comment my friend!

      redwood cx hi , I have been in business and investing 25 years. I have invested in most markets with some success. I believe now is the worst time in history to put money in any "paper' or electronic equity , bond , fund , instruments and market. As seen in 08/09 regardless of stated performance , when you try and go to cash in those electronic and paper accounts the funds can become trapped, or worse the entity running the fund , equity or instrument can fail go into bankruptcy and you get zero. Then you are reliant on the government for rescue. Not a good outcome. The only wise long term investment is real "hard assets' metals, live stock , land (if u can get cheap enough ) , commodities and fine art you yourself take and maintain possession of. If you want to trade for short term gains that's a different story, but in the current rigged system (by central banks and banks ) of crony capitalism is speculative and very dangerous especially as small retail investor. The smart investor is very defensive and risk adverse currently .
