The Boltons are literally suffering crisis in Winterfell, and their own bannermen are planning to turn on them. The Boltons are the outnumbered ones, not Stannis. How can you even think the books have the same crap as the show? Stannis's army is much better and more competent in the novels. And in addition to the army of the North, the plotting with House Manderly (the most powerful northern house), Stannis is also hiring a new army of sellsword. Don't use garbage from the show to describe what happens in the books. Also, Stannis is a master strategist, not a moron like D&D wanted him to be in the show.

The funniest thing I find about Stannis death. Is that after his death Jon ends up doing exactly what Stannis offered.
He fights for the North. Wildlings join his Army.
Stannis made the best possible offer there was for Jon. He would give Wildings a place to live. He would take back Winterfell and give it to the Starks. And after winning the Iron Throne, he would have as king, dedicated all of the Armies of Westeros to fighting the White Walkers.
And Jon was too stupid or stubborn to accept it. If Jon had accepted the offer a whole lot less people would have died. Stannis and his army wouldn't have died. All the people who died in the Battle of the Bastards wouldn't have died. Jon wouldn't have to go beyond the wall to bring a White Walker so the Night King wouldn't have gotten a dragon.
And since, the Red Priestess already considered Danaerys a chosen one. Stannis could have found a more diplomatic way of coexisting with her too.

      1) Jon couldn't have persuaded Mance to bend the knee any more than Stannis could have.
So even if Jon had accepted to become Jon Stark he wouldn't have been able to do anything for Stannis aside from maybe persuading a few Northern houses to back him as a legitimised Stark, and Stannis to retake Winterfell and slaughter the Boltons, but that wouldn't have helped much given the circumstances surrounding a significant portion of Stannis' army deserting.
      2) The wildlings eventually followed Jon because he helped them with no strings attached and they realised that they would never be safe south of the wall without helping Jon take Winterfell back so they could live in relative peace until the army of the dead found a way south of the wall.
If you actually rewatch the scene where Jon goes to the Wildlings to ask for their help, it's Tormund that convinces them to help Jon more than anything Jon said.
Jon having helped them at Hardhome with basically no strings attached already built a little trust, but had Jon just demanded that they fight for him because he'd helped them previously, instead of convincing them that it was their fight too, that trust would have been broken and they'd have told him no.
As opposed to Stannis who offered them pardon (for what crimes in their eyes), demanded their loyalty in return for their freedom and lands to live on, not exactly an enticing offer.
      3) Jon has Ned's sense of honour. He pledged his life to the Night's Watch and that's what he intends to do.
The younger Jon who'd only just joined, he would have jumped at the chance, but the Jon who had been moulded into a leader by Jeor Mormont would stick to his oath, because it was the right thing to do.

Dillane would be the ultimate Emperor Aurelian. By all accounts, he was a stern, humorless soldier’s soldier who was motivated by a sense of duty. The two of them even look somewhat alike.

Jon gives Stannis the men in the books, not the wildlings since he fears Northern lords won't follow Stannis if he has wildlings in his army, he asks Stannis to return the 300 wildlings to him and instead tells him how to win 3000 northmen from the mountain clans

Stannis was the second best commander in Westeros...Tywin was the first!
Also, Tywin defeated Stannis at the Blackwater! If Roose warned him about Stannis' arrival in the North, Tywin would have went there in a heartbeat!

Stannis: I'm talking about the Wildlings
Jon's face: Ew bro no why just use more shadow magic and kill another kid at that point no need to stoop THAT low.
I dont know why it just...to me Jon's just made a huge "dude what the fuck" face at Stannis and its hilarious. And eventually he too would understand the appeal of the wildlings.

Show Stannis - I'm going to hang out at castle black and then march a hopelessly small army to take Winterfell through a snowstorm while I also burn my daughter alive.
Book Stannis - I'm buying 20,000 sellswords to bounce back from my defeat at the blackwater. And in the meantime I'm marching the remains of my army and northern troops that have agreed to join me to lure the Bolton forces into a trap I'm setting for them.
Then once I've annihilated the Bolton's and have re taken the North for either Jon Snow or Rickon Stark I will take the newly arrived 20,000 Sellswords and any Northern forces that will join me and destroy the Lannisters for good.

If Stannis had even the slightest amount of charisma, he would've won many other players to his side. All his deals were always fair offers, and he had a good claim to the Iron Throne. It's unfortunate that he was so convinced of his own natural ability to be uncharismatic that he had to rely on the Red Woman to control others.

The difference is Jon didn't do the same thing as Stannis. Stannis DEMANDED kneeling. Jon was reborn & the wildings thought he was a god. Culture of the wildlings dictated they follow the good magic man rather than the bad magic man. Especially when the latter is threatening your people & Jon is asking for nothing you don't already want to give.

Lack of Diplomacy by John and stubbornness of Stannis&Raider took toll on Wildling's life.
Someone like Tyrion could have proposed a middle path acceptable to both...
like MansRaider to accept Stannis as King till Winter only untill Wildlings stay South of WALL...
Wildlings were going to be best fighter accustomed to Harsh Winter in North...but stannis burned their King on spike...
