- we’re only a quarter into the century, but billboard has released a list ranking the greatest popstars of the 21st century. for all we know, the greatest popstar of the century has yet to be born…but here are the rankings of the established ones and my thoughts on them

I love how they released this list despite the 21st century not being over for another 76 years
This needs to be fixed!
In a outdoor, please👏🏾
I literally thought the same thing
i believe it’s to be updated every 25 years lol so i think it’s like a nice way to keep up and see where artists end up 25 years later
Facts
Yeah definitely scratching my head at that lol if anything they could’ve just said the last two decades lol
I'm still wrapping my head how billboard ranked Drake higher than Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. When you think of pop music, you instantly think of those two or literally anyone else over Drake. Also Beyonce deserves the No.1 spot and Swifties can spew their racism (so much that there was a hastag calling them out on Twitter/X), but it shouldn't even be a question, especially when Beyoncé is always in the conversation of who is the greatest artist alive.
Drake has been a hit since the late 2010s, Lady Gaga had two hit albums and Brittney Spears has been irrelevant since the late 2000's. I don't like Drake but the guy has been a force in taking hip-hop mainstream.
@@sebastianbecerra4315 Kanye should’ve taken his place to be honest, Kanye’s impact and influence on the rap game is undeniable and insane he literally paved the way for drake.
@@VirgilOvid what impact has drake had on music? Also every project hes released since 2020 has flopper, and he just got ate up by megan thee stallion and kendrick in one year.
@@Jj-db9gq What impact has Drake had? Are you seriously asking that? C'mon, be serious with me now. The guy took hip hop mainstream, he took the baton from Kanye's 808s era and fucking ran with it. He is a direct inspiration for Abel and a lot of the crooners of this generation. He took sounds and blew them up like nobody's business. He's been top of the charts for longer than most artists have careers period and not by a small margin. Even in this year when Kendrick roundly beat him in the rap battle he's still gonna win out on plays. The people prefer to listen to Drake and the industry follows his lead.
Flee X girl it’s a cesspool that does not reflect the real world anymore
I definitely feel like Lana should have been included. She’s an interesting case of a mainstream artist who doesn’t really pull mainstream numbers in terms of singles. But she has 2 albums that went to #1 on the billboard 200 and all but one of her albums were within the top 10 of that list. She inspired artists like Billie Eilish, Lorde, Halsey and even Taylor Swift. Let’s not forget Born to Die is STILL on the Billboard 200 12 years after its debut!!!
And all her albums went top 10, top 3 even minus blue banisters
100%
@@agmd99I know Ultraviolence and Lust for Life went to #1 but what’s the third one?? And almost all her albums were in the top 10, except for her “unofficial” debut “Lana Del Ray” which didn’t chart at all if I’m not mistaken.
She should have taken bad bunny's spot
Nah
“She’s modeled the 2nd leg of her career after Lana Del Rey” an IMMEDIATE Sub!!!
Louder for ppl in the back
@@Clt.princee I would argue more of Lorde than Lana though.
@@rashidapittman8513 she literally said it
Placing Britney at #6 when she birthed half of the people on this list is laughable.
its so crazy 😭
Britney was iconic but mostly for style and her music videos,it was barely about her voice which I hate she made it so babyish. Although my mom was around during her teen years and I know her for her 2009 to 2010s style. #6 is quite generous
@@TH-camaccount50512 Like currently?
The peak of Britney Spears' career was during the 2000s. She hasn’t released any music since 2016, and people talk more about her private life than her career. She is far from being considered the greatest pop star of the 21st century.
@@MakaylaWilliams-y3c Britney has one of the most recognizable voices in music. It being "babyish" is what made Britney different, vocally. In fact it was so popular that the industry adopted Britney's vocal style and tried to recreate other popstars using the same style (Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera (at the start), Willa Ford, Heidi Montag, Hilary Duff, etc.) but in the end it was something that only worked for Britney.
Britney Spears pioneered a cultural shift in pop music, defining the teen pop genre of the 2000's. She should have been in the top 5 imo.
Of the 90s barely 2000s
@@TH-camaccount50512 🤦 her career was on a singing show that's how she grew her career into Britney Spears. It was kinda like the same thing with Beyonce. For the 21st century Britney wasn't known much for her music anymore just the Justin Timberlake drama and her annoying auto tuned baby voice
@@MakaylaWilliams-y3cok when you mention Britney’s voice it wasn’t bad as y’all made it seems, and keep in mind if she has gain freedom control she would of been using her natural deep voice, and keep in mind the conservatorship definitely made an impact in her personal life as well as her music
@@christiansoto1367 Well that's true I didn't think about that
@@MakaylaWilliams-y3c Britney always did numbers though? Known for it or not her music always sells
A case could be made that Rihanna should be at number 2. Even if Taylor has more longevity in music, Rihanna’s discography is far more iconic in many people’s eyes
And rihanna is more culturally impactful especially outside america
Rihanna and Beyoncé have much more impact than Taylor. I think taylor fanatics seem to forget that charts and numbers are ADDITIONAL things that an artist should have but IMPACT is much more noticable. Rihanna and Beyoncé exemplify this kind of influence. Both artists have continuously evolved their sound and image while maintaining a strong connection with their audiences, often addressing themes and issues that transcend entertainment. Their reach goes beyond sales figures-they’ve become cultural icons who inspire and empower millions worldwide. This ability to connect with people on such a meaningful level over an extended period is what sets them apart. Impact, not just numbers, is the hallmark of greatness in artistry, and Rihanna and Beyoncé have mastered this in ways that few others can claim.
@@visionaryannieas a fan of all 3, you’re definitely underestimating Taylor’s impact
Rihanna and Taylor actually have the same amount of longevity. In fact Rihanna actually started her career one year before Taylor. I do agree that a case can definitely be made but personally I'm happy Taylor is above Rihanna since I'm a swiftie lol. I do love Rihanna too ofc
@@ItsAlannaBanana i think the difference is her impact has more to do with white women, When it comes to rihanna and beyoncé i feel like their impact touches everyone not just a group of people.
beyoncé has seen continued relevancy and impact like i've ever seen. no amount of revisionist history will ever change the fact she's actually been the one to beat since the late 90's. number ones, album sales, global impact, acclaim, accolades, unwavering voice, performing standard, class, beauty and a pop-star handbook rule breaker. give it up for our number one yall!!! 👑
And she remains unbeatable on all those levels. She's a one in a millennium. It will take year 4000 to get another like her.

i honestly think that the list was fairly accurate. my biggest grievance is that drake should not have been above gaga or britney. beyoncé undoubtedly deserves the number one spot though and the discourse surrounding her and taylor swift highlights a key issue with stan culture that people often overlook.
I agree
Race is a big one too. People reduce it to colour optics.
I think the reality is they had to factor in Drake's objective chart successes, which include 13 number one hot 100 hits this century which is more than Britney and Gaga combined.

@@shreyasinhamahapatra2731 Well black people aren’t a monolith and many black people were saying that Taylor should be #1 so don’t lie on us. Her performances aren’t really culturally “iconic”.
Im just mad they didn't included Miss Amy Winehouse. She was purest and coolest and soo talented. Real music, raw emotions, a generational voice! Her albums are so unique, joyful and captivating.

Agreed
2:58 BTS is on this list not just because they’re a boy band, but because of the barriers they broke in mainstreaming k-pop outside of their domestic market. Western achievements once thought to be impossible opened the door of possibilities for groups that are now promoting after them. They opened the door for kpop to be sold at major national/global in-store retailers, made global stadium tours for K-pop acts a potentiality, were the first Korean group to have songs in the top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 and the first to have a #1, they became an economic soft power in their home country, the global expansion we see in k-pop was due to their visibility, they gave groups from small companies hope that they could also become global stars. There’s so many other factors to consider other than writing them off as another manufactured boyband. What other Asian group has done what they’ve done to the scale that they’ve been able to do it before they did it? What western boyband could say they put an entire country’s pop music industry on the map?

Taylor swift is a great writer but Beyoncé can sing and dance better than her. @@akashvalsan6609her debut album has been charting in the BB200 for almost 13 years 😂 and they initially stated the list is more about impact than numbers, be serious.
lana is my second fav artist, that being said, lana as of now doesn't have a #1 on the hot 100, just on the 200 and has seen her best relevancy these past years. the artists on this list have impact, relevant highs and more numbers to back them up so billboard is going by most relevance the last 24 years.

Drake is too high, Weeknd is too low, Bieber unpopular opinion should be a little higher he is the biggest male pop act of this century tbh esp when you consider longevity. Also Rihanna should be number 2 not Taylor, Taylor should be 3 she’s been pop for only four - five eras.
Shakira should be higher too
I think Shakira should’ve been placed higher maybe even in JTs spot. She undoubtedly had one of the best years of her career last year outside of her debut. She’s collabed with a lot of the greats on this list like Beyoncé and Riri. Her performances are always great. She might be more well known in the Spanish market but is one of the few artists after Gloria Estefan to have crossover in the US market which was arguably harder to do in the early 2000s than it probably is now.
BRITNEY SPEARS number 6 it's CRIMINAL...

To be completely honest, Rihanna would have definitely been number 2 or even 1 if it weren’t for her hiatus. She is the only artist in the top 3 who has withstood such a hiatus and has remained a dominant presence, which shows that her catalog is much more than just sales. The impact and longevity is there. It’s unmatched actually.

i definitely agree with beyoncé and taylor in their respective placements. I feel like at the same time it’s easy to inflate taylor’s impact from recency bias, it’s also easy to deflate it from the feeling of overexposure or what not. she’s been massive since very early in her career and has only expanded as time has passed
💯 recency bias. Everyone’s all about Taylor rn so they all expect her to be number one but ppl forget that talent exists outside of Taylor currently
Ed definitely deserves his spot he may not have put any chart topping albums/singles lately but that pen in the writing room is undeniable
Honestly Bruno I’m my opinion should be higher. This man plays piano, guitar, has amazing vocals, writes hits own songs, and is the only pop star I’ve seen that can keep up with Beyoncé as far as dancing. Bruno’s so talented it’s actually crazy that people don’t give him more props.
Pink literally reinvented herself and inspired a huge cohort of new talent, even her peers at the time! All while never selling sexy but undeniable vocal talent and unforgettable live performances. So many credit her, Dua Lipa and Adele to name just two! She's still a touring behemoth and won all sorts of accolades, particularly from Billboard so it's odd she was missed out.
OMG you correct about the reinvention. She used to do hip hop and even adopted the style and slang and then once she made it big she dropped all the black/urban/hip hop artist schtick. Pink was a culture vulture. Thanks for reminding me.
@chinyereugwu9431 you're ignorant. She never said she was not white. Her label promoted her to be ambiguous because it caught attention. She liked proving people wrong as often as possible, "you can't skate because you're a girl / you can't sing R&B because you're white". She's a huge supporter of the black community and BLM and respects that music but she is allowed creative freedom to do what she wants. I didn't remind you she was anything, I'm informing you and making you aware you're chatting like a hater and bot. Move on
Beyoncé deserves the number one spot. Beyoncé pushes boundaries and has been around for 25+ years. Each of her solo album is impactful plus let’s not forget Destiny’s Child discography, she is a generational artist and the last traditional superstar. The fact that Drake is higher than Lady Gaga is insane. Lady Gaga has made some of pop Cultures biggest moments and hella talented.
Beyonce deserved it. Even if we discount her longevity, she changed the game, something Taylor Swift cannot say tbh. Swift has always remained mass marketable by intention. You can't do that and be a game changer at the same time.
Kind of disappointed of this list, like Lana was kind of snubbed. But can we talk abt how swifties were extremely racist towards Beyonce on twitter while her and taylor are friends??
Yeah, that rubs me the wrong way
While that is obviously racism is bad, but at the same time, a lot of people discredit Taylor just cause she's white and has a large white fanbase. Heck, she's even gets discreddited for having a majority female audience, like that's a bad thing, but a male artist having a majority male audience is all good.
i think the whole beyhive swiftie stan war is very weird but to be fair ive seen a lot of the beyhive also be exposed for their behavior towards asians (that is just what ive seen dont attack me for it), ive also seen some swifties be racist which is pretty expected since we're a huge fan base and you're definitely gonna find racists in any huge group (doesn't excuse is), lana isnt your traditional kind of pop star, she's a very critically acclaimed artist but she isnt a typical popstar yk, when i think lana i dont think popstar, i think songwriter, poet, she's a huge inspiration for artists that are huge nowadays (namely billie & taylor) and for that she could be placed higher, but at the end this is billboard and numbers definitely affected her position

I don't think she deserves the top spot regarding billboards own metrics for this list. Yes, she had loads of hits that are still very relevant today but Beyoncé just has a lot of talents that Rihanna does not excel in - vocals, dancing, artistic vision come to mind - while having more longevity and almost as many hits. However, I could see RiRi in #2, had she kept releasing music in this decade. And you can't deny the impact Taylor Swift has had on the whole music industry for the past decade.
I think they did well with their top 3
Britney Spears was massively popular during her peak in the 2000s. She has moderate success in the 21st century, and now people talk more about her private life than for her, she also didn't released a album since 2016. This list is about the greatest artists of the 21st century. I agree that Rihanna should be ranked higher. She’s the only artist who started her career after the 2000s to have sold 250 million or more records. The closest comparison is Madonna, who began her career in 1982. Additionally, Rihanna is the third artist with the most number-one hit songs.
@@Jfray252 It’s not just sales and popularity though, britney’s performances during her peak were amazing and even in the 2010’s they always captivated people
Britney was popular in the 21st century lmao. The 2000s are in the 21st century so saying she was moderately popular in the century doesn't many any sense
Rihanna can't sing her hits even Brittany

BTS' impact is way bigger than you guys think. They're one of the best selling on the entire list, one of the few that can outsell worldwide stadium tours, they've won over a 1000 awards (only them, Beyonce, Taylor & MJ to ever do it), they were the first ever non-English act to be the best selling act of the year (via IFPI & they’ve done it twice) & they are worth 5 billion dollars to the South Korean economy every single year. Everyone was going crazy over the era tours' impact on the economy while BTS does that just by existing. When they released dynamite, one song, they increased the South Korean economy by 1 billion dollars. One song alone. They've spoken at the UN in front of world leaders 3 times, they've talked at the White House etc. They are a soft power.
Shhh you don't understand, they are asian, don't speak english, never signed to an american label, they can't be impactful in pop culture, c'mon

She does. Britney dominated the 2000s. Released one of the greatest pop albums - Blackout. She's a legend
Britney literally set off the 21st century with Baby One More Time.
Britney has the most iconic performances and biggest influence. She was the most googled celebrity from 1999 to 2010.
I love me some Britney, but she hasn't had a huge hit song since Scream & Shout and that was back in 2013 or a hit album since 2011 with Femme Fatale. Maybe she could've ranked higher than Lady Gaga, but Beyonce has now had more success, more impact, and more longevity than Brit. I would love for her to make the 21st century version of Private Dancer and make a huge comeback as a wiser middle-aged artist.

8:26 the literal conception of celebrity culture that we have now it’s thanks to Lady Gaga, her incredibly big success in 2008 shape-shifted the pop landscape for the first 5 years of the upcoming decade when the EDM invasion came, she managed to again reinvent herself, make the MOST AWARDED SONG IN HISTORY and come back to lead yet another wave of EDM for an upcoming decade. And now she’s the third artist in history to have 2 No 1 on the BBH100 in three different decades and the only one that have achieved that in the 21st century. So, I actually think she should be higher in the ranking, and yea definitely higher than Britney
The Swifties had no right to attack Beyonce just bc she ranked higher than Taylor Swift. Her fanbase is an absolute disturbing cult
Edit: my point has been proven as always. Thanks Swifties
Her fandom is one of the biggest mysoginistic racist fandoms to exist . And they have the nerve to accuse people who dislike her music of misogyny. Hypocrits! The vile things they wrote about beyonce are unspeakable .
ohhh, here we go again, chill not all her fanbase is like that, you are like one of those TS haters that are as persistent with bs as the swifties you are talking about, both as obsessed with her i guess. every celebrity is attacked if you didn't notice, like you and a million others are hating on TS and her fanbase so why is u better. I like Beyonce as well so it's not about that it's a bout this lame mindset of people who like to put other people against each other which is so tiring and so 2011
Taylor clears Beyonce across the board. Beyonce has been an old washed out legacy act for over a decade now with the press gassing her up way too much. She not chart topping often anymore, her albums come and go, and her concerts don't pull spectacular numbers. People aren't listening or caring about the old ass Beyonce in the current era, her last big cultural moment was the super forced "Run the World (Girls)" track that got pushed for pandering in the girl power era. Lemonade was riding on yet another moment in culture and never got that big either. Formation is again just riding on cultural moment. Hell, even Cowboy Carter was a trend chasing dud that got eclipsed by Shaboozey's success. Beyonce hasn't been at the top of shit except for manufactured industry lists and being slobbered by online writers. The audience stopped thinking of her as a "queen" or any kind of royalty decades ago. She's closer to Mariah Carey than Taylor Swift.

First of all Nobody asked for this list. 2nd, we are only 2 decade in for the 21st century. 3rd, the ranking is all over the place like bruno mars being low, Pink not on the list, Drake is above Gaga and Britney. And lastly, if we do math , Bay make it to the top by a small margine , "her career being older than top contenders". And that backhanded comment on BTS, they mean the same for Kpop what Bad bunny, Shakira is for Latin music.
@TH-camaccount50512 She was, but I'm speaking more from an impact perspective rather than popularity. BTS put Kpop into the mainstream map, to the point US award shows started adding KPop catagories.
I mean one direction kinda invented modern fan culture. they were the first massive music based fandom on current social media, their fan fiction was notably huge and some of the first of its kind to get published AND to inspire movies even still being made today (after series and the idea of you). not to mention there was even a short lived sitcom based on a bit of Harry’s life (happy together). the one direction fan frenzy was one of the closest things we’ve had to beatlemania and it was elevated by social media. their fanbase was unstoppable. they may not have had a huge impact on music sonically but they had a large impact on how it’s consumed and how people act about it when it comes to fandom

Even though she was only here for a short amount of time and only had one album out in the 21st century it would’ve been cool to see Aaliyah make the list. Beyonce is a well earned well deserved number 1, she hits all points on what being a popstar is and has been for decades never loosing steam.
I would personally put Britney Spears at number 2, like come on the literal princess of pop. Iconic, influential to almost every popstar after her. And then Rihanna at number 3, for pretty much the same reasons as Britney, her ruling over pop music for 7 albums in 7 years is incredible.
Then I woult put Taylor and Drake at number 4 and 5, they have numbers and earnings above everyone on this list absolutely, but when I think popstar I inmediately think of the top 3 ladies first.
The rest of the list is fine, I laso think The Weeknd is too low, he should have been closer to the top ten and Lana del Rey should have definetely been on this list if not for her number for her influence over the pop landscape since 2012, like you can definetely hear the shift in music, singing, fashion, culture when she came into the scene. She changed teenage girls all over the world.
