you only have 3 rows of blocks for the foreground layer, of which you actually map in the GAPS, as there are fewer of them to handle.... The resolution on this part is pretty bad, not a lot to define...
You could do this once for each layer, or just draw 2 copies, one displaced by whatever amount...
Also, the scrolling layers dont overlap. And I cant tell if the 2 layers actually update simultaneously, or in turns.
+Frabbledabble That's what happens when you perform a 30FPS recording of 60FPS gameplay. You can't tell exactly how the graphics are rendered and various visual effects are ruined

Techically i dont think its really parallax scrolling, but its so beautiful that it doesn't matter and impressive how they did it with the 40x1 area to work with.
For anyone interested in the trivia part of the parallax scrolling discussion; the first arcade game to have this feature was apparently Jump Bug.
I love this game. One of my favorites for the Atari. I remember getting it for my birthday along with Dig Dug so many years ago. Man, I feel old. :(
OMG, parallax scrolling in the jungle levels, never noticed that before on the 2600; that's really epic for 1982 !!!
This was before the ill-fated "ET (aka 'Eee-Tee')" came out that same year and it was a really complete disgrace.
Interesting, that it scrolls from right to left. I seem to recall an interview with Nintendo stating that scrolling from left to right was more optimal as it was easier on the eyes or something.

I think Jungle Hunt is the only Atari 2600 game to have parallax scrolling. Impressive.

Played this as a kid, much nostalgia.
Punching a gator who has it's mouth half open gives 200pt, fully open kills you. 300pt for fast moving ones.
Pushing up on the stick when you jump in the boulder section makes you jump a bit higher.
The reason Jungle King changed to Jungle Hunt in the arcade was because of a lawsuit from the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs because the player character in the original Jungle King had a strong resemblance to Tarzan. Thus, they made the character a jungle explorer.
You guys need to put away the 2600 and get an Atari 800 Computer. It has games and graphics that rival the Nintendo and Sega 8-bits and nobody talks about it. Huge library.

No....it doesn‘t. Yes it has a hugh library but nothing there really rivals nes or sms graphics. Most of the games have problems to rival other 8 Bit computers....except the Apple 2, but that system has an even larger library.

Damn, I had this game for my Apple IIc growing up, and could never get past that big boulder. I had no idea you could duck.
I had the Atari800 version of this game, so the graphics were a bit sharper. This one was an interesting classic, the way the gameplay kept changing with each scene.
Karen Elizabeth You really had to search and search hard to find the great games, like _Alley Cat_ and _Agent USA_ (well, that's more of a personal favorite) and _Nautilus_.

the version I played is for the Atari 800. it has better graphics, in the swimming level there was an Epcot spaceship earth under the water (or that what I thought of it back then!) and the natives are cannibals trying to eat your girlfriend-or-daughter (hope she's not both...!!) anyway, lovely game, one of my favorite as a child.
I don't know why the life counter confuses people. It's a number of lives you have left after the current one you're on.
1=You have 1 left after you die.
0=None left, game over if you die.
I don't think I've ever had a game show 1 life then gameover after dying.
The boulder section on the second loop seems impossible.
Jungle King was replaced with Jungle Hunt because the hero in King looked and sounded too much like Tarzan which Atari had no license to use. I was 13 when we got this. We returned it for the 5200 version because it was closer to the arcade. The 2 natives and the girl were on the same screen with the girl tied over a boiling caulderon.
Every time i watch when they play jungle hunt i could always here the last stage with the great music beat

I had no idea the Atari 2600 could do parallax scrolling and layers. The NES is way more powerful, and it couldn't do that.

One of the greatest Atari 2600 games, right up there with "Yar's Revenge" and the deathmatch classic "Outlaw".

Got this on both the Atari & ColecoVision Flashback. The CV port is closer to the arcade game but the 2600 version has a nice Pitfall-like feel to it. And "punching alligators" is something that Saxon Hale from TF2's Mann Co. would do... ;)

It's cool to know Mike is almost my age, I was born in 1979. I had this game as a child. I know I've gone farther than these two did on the video, if I remember right, the second you face the natives there are 3, and like Kung Fu, everything is faster second time around.
I had this for the Atari 800XL. The last two levels were slightly different, but made it so much more difficult. The boulder level was uphill, and not flat. And the native level had two natives dropping the girl into a pot of water. I could never get past that.

"Empire Strikes Back" is another Atari 2600 game with parallax scrolling and that was released a bit before "Jungle Hunt."
The original Jungle King version in the arcades actually had you playing as Tarzan instead of a generic explorer. They had to change it after the people who owned the rights to Tarzan found out about it.
The worst part about the whole Indiana Jones thing is they are doing another one! And Atari games are awesome but yes there are some that suffered from bad design or rushed programming aka E. T. , but this game is great.
