I think "Irish pirate metal" is the greatest combination of words I've ever heard.
I second that motion
Aye, fully agreed
As an irishman I agree
Yar!
An example of how badass Grainne was:
Grainne once met the Queen of England, Elizabeth the First, in Greenwich Palace.
She was INVITED. A woman, a known Pirate, invited by the Queen of a land which had occupied Grainne's country for centuries. Most importantly, she was able to leave.
Dara McMahon she also NEVER bowed, or showed any kind subserviantce to the queen, she spoke to queen Elizabeth as equals.
she also threw a handkerchief of a nobleman into a fire after she used it, which essentially insulted everyone in the room.
+William B (PKMN12)
To be fair, I don't think that was an intended insult. Aren't Irish and English cultures slightly different at the time?
Aligor Zeimet At the time, Ireland was a colony of England. Regardless of cultures, she knew what she was doing.
Apparently she did explain the handkerchief thing though, so that might have been a clash of cultures.
Dara McMahon
Yeah. Likely.
When the British nobility gave her shit about her lack of deference to their Queen, she declared that she was a Queen as well, and would behave as such.
For all you lads that are still listening to this 9 years later and counting, salute the great Pirate Queen and say Aye!!!
07 aye
Aye
Aye!!!
7 years? Man, I remember the day this was released.
Aye, indeed
Aye O7
Daughter of the dún
Terror of the west
Sailed the coasts of Ireland
With O'Malley on her crest
Sailors on the blue
Shakin' in their cots
Feelin' the foreboding of
The terror that she wrought
Hup the hull and away we go
Stock the galley o'gold
Whack the divil the gales he blow
We'll batter him up in the hold
Dance along on the waterline
Speed us over the waves
Back to back on the borderlines
To never shut up & behave
Gráinne Mhaol
Queen of the pirates
She set sail
On the raging sea
Gráinne Mhaol
The gleam of the Irish
Spun her tales
On the ocean free
Never to be caught
Tangled on the ropes
Hacked away the lengthy locks
In order to elope
She would lose no fight
She would take no shite
Stole the noble offspring
In the middle of the night
Hup the hull and away we go
Stock the galley o'gold
Whack the divil the gales he blow
We'll batter him up in the hold
Dance along on the waterline
Speed us over the waves
Back to back on the borderlines
To never shut up & behave
Gráinne Mhaol
Queen of the pirates
She set sail
On the raging sea
Gráinne Mhaol
The gleam of the Irish
Spun her tales
On the ocean free
Banríon na farraige
Cróga agus tréan
Ag taisteal ar na dtonnta
Cailín ag troid di féin
Tabhair faoi na Breataine
Éist leis a béic
Scrios na báid leatromach
Ag cosaint ar an ríocht
Never to fall!!!
A rebel in all!!!
Gráinne Mhaol
Queen of the pirates
She set sail
On the raging sea
Gráinne Mhaol
The gleam of the Irish
Spun her tales
On the ocean free
Thank you, hero.
@@TenebrisArt it's my pleasure :D
Thank you for this!
Thanks brother
Came back this version after listening to new version. Both are very great
Makes me proud to be Irish. I'd love to see an animated history of Grainne. She's Even mentioned in the Irish rebel song Oro Se Do Bheatha Bhaile
You should always be proud to be Irish
@@Black_Sunshine I have great pride in my Irish ancestry
@@graceokeefe2482 I'm Australian but my mum was Irish and my dad was Scottish
@@Black_Sunshine my mum is half German, don't know the rest of hers but dad is almost full Irish, except one 16th Cherokee
@@Black_Sunshine a true celt
I don't always listen to this song, but when I do, I listen to it on repeat for at least an hour.
really when I do I'm playing tempest or Sid Meier pirates
+tony12319t You're doing it wrong.
You grab a couple pints, light a cigar, close the blinders, and kick back & forth.
My Dad lives in the rural village of Murrisk in County Mayo. That was essentially Gráinne Mhaol's part of Ireland.
5 years, TH-cam? You only reccommend it to me FIVE YEARS AFTER UPLOADING?!
Well, atleast I can listen to this great piece now.
Imagine how legendary you have to be to have a wide array of fanart of you available for the backdrop of a metal song about you.
Best 3 words on earth: Irish pirate Metal. Makes me proud of my ancient Irish heritage.
After hearing the Irish entry for Eurovision I'm convinced either this song or Sirona would've been much superior choices. They have so much more originality and Irish flavor going for them.
Almost every country was doing the same generic sentimental love song crap and neglecting their native languages in favor of English.
I'm fairly sure there are rules about the song having to be mostly in English, but I still agree with your point, they should definitely get Gav to show everyone how to do Music and let Ireland win
there's no rule that a song should be in English... unless that's some new thing. Would explain the poor quality of the songs for the past decade...
Definitely not otherwise France would have never won ever.
I prefer when eurovision gets wacky.
AMEN! ... said Satan 'XD
Can we all agree that Nordic/Irish/Celtic folklore makes The best music ?
MiniatureLabyrinth there’s the Slavs as well
I AGREE TO THAT MATE
Agree
Mongols or Slavs?
All Irish are celtic. Not all Celts Are irish
I'd totally watch a Grace O'Malley animated TV show if this was the theme song.
I would watch it. Knowing that it would likely be a blend of piracy during the age of queen elizabeth 1, Irish rebellions, and likely some fey shenanigans mixed in. Because she is already a folkloric figure, why not have her clashing with man, beast, and fey alike.
that... would actually be fucking awesome.
If someone can animate it I would be willing to voice act for a modest fee!
Meanwhile I am over the 30 so I would like a series for adults. With slaughtering, pillaging and raping pirates. Bloody iron, smoking cannons, deadly sea and a hot, overpowered captain. Hell yeah I would love this!
I could see it
This is so badass. Ireland has great myths, historical figures, and folklore.
And singers
Too many, I wonder...
All hail the Queen of Ireland!
Another great song Gav, thank you!
And respect to the Irish people, because they could make their independence and they've keep it since then!Big respect!
Best Wishes: Peter from Hungary
I know its been a couple years since this song, but I hope we can see more Celtic Metal from you Gavin. I adore the way you sing these songs in particular.
What an absolute banger Gav!
Feeling that Irish heritage running through my veins . . . and it ain't the beer! XD
My Irish ancestry was from the same area. O'Donnells. I have been there and having lectured on her here in Australia, they know use my notes for the guided tours of Westport House..... lol!!
It's called Guinness you philistine
My Irish ancestors were the Scottish Armstrongs who married into the Maguires in County Fermanagh.
@@pattonramming1988 it's called poitín
Never heard her story before...I somehow feel like I've been missing out.
YossarianVanDriver This song made me go and read about her, and are you missing out! Go research! It's worth it.
LadyRunic Um...will do.
YossarianVanDriver en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_O'Malley it's worth to read this
Diablo Reaperofsouls Shortly after the previous reply, I did indeed go and read it; it's interesting stuff.
Thanks folks I am going to do it to.
Six years later and still a straight up banger.
Besides institutional sexism, HOW HAS THIS WOMAN NOT BEEN TURNED INTO A MOVIE?! She's not even the ONLY legendary, badass pirate queen from history!
This has become my absolute favorite driving song.
Has nothing to do with sexism as we have plenty of movies with female leads (Kill Bill, Alien, Birds of Prey, Ghost in the Shell, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Rouge One etc). Most likely it is because the story probably isn't well known outside of Irland.
@@brucejedilee5290 but we hear about all these other male pirates, like Blackbeard, for example. And she's also done a ton of really amazing things too. Someone said that apparently, after Grainne gave birth to her son, she got right back up and started fighting like a couple minutes later. After just giving birth to a child, at sea, in medieval times, on a ship that's probably gross and disgusting because it's filled with a bunch of grown adults, probably mostly men, who have been at sea for quite a while and didn't have much access to what little hygiene was available at the time. Plus a lot of women died during childbirth, and it was very common for there to be some sort of complications. She gave birth, which is already hard and painful and traumatic enough in today's modern, more advanced world, in those conditions, and got up basically right away, grabbed a sword or whatever, and went right back to fighting. That alone is a qualification for someone to be like, "hey, this amazing person exists, and since it's their birthday, let me tell you about her", on twitter or any other social media site really, and for everyone to go, "oh my gosh!! Look at her!!" And for multiple different movie companies to start making movies about her.
@@elainadeeter9788 give hollywood a year or two for them to find out and then either hire a director that will portray her as awesome or screws her up and keeps reminding us that she's a strong independent woman
Along Chen I Cao.
Another thing: Basically all pirate movies were flops. With the exeption of treasure Island and Pirates of the Carribean.
You have no idea how long I have been looking for a song like this. THIS IS AWESOME!!! Hail the Emerald Isle and its Pirate Queen!
"Who am I, 16th century Irish pirate Grainne O'Mally?"
imagine Grainne and Cu Chulainn meet. They'd either get along great or destroy each other
Love the pics of Ireland
This is why I support not only women's rights, but also women's wrongs 🤘🏴☠️
Then you should support a lead ball in your brain q:
@@FrawgfithAmbloseI don’t think they meant “wrongs committed towards women” so much as “wrongs committed *by* women (because female pirates are badass)”
based
@@Torika2724Pretty much. It's common parlance in fandom circles, first commenter is just a salty idiot.
Reading comprehension on the Internet is piss-poor.
@@FrawgfithAmblose Sounds like you've already got one of your own in there. Equal Rights = Equal Fights.
Unsurprisingly, my favorite song on the album. Love me some pirate metal, and it's always great to hear you go full Irish. Long live the queen.
Damn I love the Irish Language! Would love to see more Irish in your music Gav, it fits so well!
I cant stop listning to this over and over again
Norse, Finnish, Slavic, Baltic, Finish and Celtic (Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Brittish and Gaullish) music is the best.
This is yet another inspirational song out of...heck I've lost count by now. Thank you thrice-over you marvelous bard.
This is truly superb. I love Irish folk music and the way you blend in a rocking beat is glorious.
My friend told me to listen to this Irish pirate metal is now my favorite.
I'm happy Ireland has such a badass in it's history. The homeland of some of my ancestors was and is awesome.
Same kinda my family from the isle of man
@@Ashley-the-fox cool
@@orkface234 thanks also cool for your family history
Irish pirate metal is the best. They tell the coolest stories and grace O’Malley is the coolest story ever. Not only she fight for women’s rights. She wanted equality for everyone. Her story needs to be told. Huge fan of Irish culture it’s the best.
I just looked up her history. And I can say that she is one of the coolest, most badass pirates in history. She's just awesome!
Check Anne Bonny and The Bloody Rose of China Zheng Yi Sao. Two notorious female pirates and one of them is the Pirate Queen who kidnapped a whole nation.
Yes please. Please more Irish and Celtic metal please.
It's amazing how well metal and a nice 'ol pirate jig go together :D
Incredible! Well done lad!
9 Years later, i still come back to this song.
This is one of the old ones i would LOVE to see a new take with all the experience of 9 years creating songs!
Damn, i just LOVE this song
Nice!
Another great song inspired by irish/celtic folklore, just like Sirona!
Have you ever considered an album entirely based on irish tales and legends, Gav? Where you could sing both english and gaelic, just like here and in Sirona. I think it would be great!
And the celtic culture can be a rich source for these kind of songs! Or at least I think that way, but it might be just me, as someone who is a great fan of celtic legends and irish music. :)
That sounds great!
JohnfuckingSnow Really good idea!
JohnfuckingSnow Gráinne is less folklore, more actual historical figure. Which only makes her more badass :P
JohnfuckingSnow Were there only more hours in the days...
Whatisthis Poppycock Tales and legends can easily be based on actual historical figures, like Abe Lincoln being a vampire hunter. Total bs, but still is there.
Love this. We had great fun dancing around to this...haha play it again...and again

I'd fucking love if there was a purely pirate songs album by you.
As an O’Malley her story is a point of pride for us

MegaMementoMori I didn't think of that! Well, that's even better!
Thank you for this song. This is the best way to learn about any part of history!
anyone who can talk shit to a queens face instantly gains my respect
Especially walking away from one
Next Pirates of the Caribbean needs to be a standalone movie with this tale
Somebody somewhere needs to make a movie about this woman, doesn't matter if it's Pirates of the Caribbean, or some other franchise, it doesn't matter what they're doing, as long as it has tons of amazing factoids about her tossed in, her being amazing and a bamf, and this is the theme song, along with maybe other irish folk songs or irish songs, or pirate songs in general. And it's at least somewhat historically accurate. I mean, this WAS hundreds of years ago, and I just now found out about her because I was listening to Miracle of Sound and this popped up, so most people probably haven't heard about her.
@@elainadeeter9788 very true
@@elainadeeter9788What's a bamf?
This and Sirona are my favorites. Fantastic work, Gav, as always.
why is this so good?
oh wait. it's by Miracle Of Sound
that's why it's so good
This is really awesome. Has everything I could want in a pirate metal song. I can't wait to buy the whole album next Friday when I get paid.
I knew nothing about Grace O'Malley before listening to this song just now, but Jesus is her Wikipedia article fucking impressive.
I’m an American of German ancestry but this song makes me feel Irish pride
Maybe you're part Irish too? I'm German/Irish.
Awesome, you are the best, just the best and no one can reach your talent, you are so f****** awesome, hope you go on like that, good luck and thank you for all the great songs.
Could we have more like buttons? One isn't quite cutting it.

Sir you had me at “ Irish pirate metal “
Awesome AND informative! Thanks, Gav.
Never heard of her before (stupid US educational system) She sounds like one badass babe.
Dark Lady of Dun...:-D..pissing her off was usually fatal mistake...
May I interest you in the story of the Lioness of Brittany then ? Our local Grainne. :D
Yeah, I actually learned more about the Swedish Empire from Sabaton (and for that matter, the Thirty Years war and the Great Northern War) than from school. There is so much history out there that is either neglected or ignored entirely, and it's sad. This song is the first time I have heard of this woman: she sounds awesome.
Thanks for introducing me to a very interesting folklore/person. Your songs are not only fun to listen to, but informative as well.
I now have the sudden urge to play Assassins Creed Black Flag flag again
whyuhatan lol I played all the AC games, so far Black Flag is a brill game but Rogue has new weapons tht u might want to try out if u dnt mind bein a Templar lol
Bro Rogue is so much cooler go check it out ,it has icebergs and shit !And Shay is a badass !
Matei Goina unfortunately I don't have a lot of money this is one of the 3 games I've been wanting to get but I can only afford one so as much as I would like to get assassins Assassin's Creed rogue I have decided to pick up The Witcher 3 instead especially since it's an Xbox one game and I'm in desperate need of new games for that console
whyuhatan Witcher games are always good, dunno about 3 though since I'm on PC ....but you should definitely try out Rogue when you have the money and the time for it
Matei Goina aye, Rogue was a brill game
Once again, You have BLOWN US AWAY!!!!! Great job Gav!!!!!!!!
Wish we meet the Irish legend in Assassin's Black Flag even though it was mostly in the Caribbean hopefully they'll make a make a game set in Ireland during her era
Love this song, Mr. Dunne! Especially how you let your accent come through! 😄👏👏
Awesome music and lyrics, plus historically educational. I love this song!!! Had to be hard to sing though. Gaelic is hard enough to pronounce without having to sing it. But you did this perfectly!
This one and Mother Earth are by far the best songs in your album(at least in my opinion).
I love your work, keep on rocking man and greetings from Mexico.
TO GRACE O MALLEY ! BE YE REMEMBERED GREAT IRISH QUEEN !
This song is amazing. Thank you soooooo much for it
Had no idea about this lady, but having looked up some of her history, I'm glad to know of her now. I like the part where she sacked her son's town when he supported one of her rivals. That's hard core, man.
To people who make fan art, here's a proposal:
She lived to the ripe old age of 73, and continued her career well into middle-age. iirc, she lost and rebuilt her fortune three or four times before retiring to England to chill with Q.E.. This woman was a survivor, who never backed down and never gave up (not counting how and why she retired).
And as Gav referenced in the song, part of her legend is how she cut her hair so she could go to sea. According to what I read, her father wouldn't let her go on voyages with him, saying that her long hair would get tangled in the ropes. So she cut it all off and he let her go with him.
So, I think it would be cool to see her portrayed as an older woman, the confident, savvy commander of a great fleet. With short hair. :)
Thanks Gav, for the great song and for introducing me to this fascinating person.
Also, here is the source for much of my information. Fair warning, it is a great wall of small print text.

Best title of the album imo.
Keep up the good work.
Fun and kinda irrelevant fact: Grace O'Malley is *theorized* (not confirmed yet but I really hope it's true) to be my great times a few hundred grandmother!
YoOo- that is So Cool
How did you Come to find that out?
Can you update people on this? Is it true? It would be sick as if so

I love this song, one of many awesome songs on your album! Irish Pirate Metal just sounds perfect to me haha. I also love the pictures you've used in this video. Some great artists and beautiful landscapes. I've walked along those cliffs last summer! This song will definetely play in my mind when I return there.
I recommend 2 songs from the metal band "Frantic Amber" about that theme : "Grainne Mhaol" And it's alternate version "Crimson Seas"
Favorite song of the album, gotta love Pirate metal!

This is the jauntiest thing ever man, one of my favourite songs in your album~ Thanks for the upload!
I really want to see an epic musical mash-up with you rocking vocals and guitar, Lindsey Stirling killing violin and choreography, and Jeff Williams kicking it on the drums and electronic keyboard. And maybe Fallout Boy for a glob of added awesome.
Good job describing her the way you did!
