    The new bastinelli primal "karambit" is super interesting to me. One of the things that has kept me from getting a karambit so far is the finger ring. so to see a hawkbill shaped fixed blade marketed as a karambit that should more or less function as a karambit without the finger ring, is just what I needed in order to dip my toes into that side of the hobby

    Dca, what company makes a 5" scandi grind fixed blade in 1095 carbon?. With.a 90 degree spine? $125. Continued success 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    • @realbroggo
      @realbroggo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a hard one. Scandi grinds are popular in Europe however 1) 1095 isn't widely used in Europe and 2) 5" is getting long for a traditional scandi grind which is usually used on camping, woodworking & hunting knives. If you really want a large scandi blade but are willing to choose an alternate steel (ie. 3V, A2 or O1) I recommend LT Wright. Excellent maker with great track record making outdoor/camping/field blades. You pay a bit more (definitely outside your budget) but they will last a lifetime. Condor Knives & Joker Knives may have some options in the size you want - check their websites? DCA might know of a more budget friendly option. Hope this helps. Have a great day.

    Hi DCA & Thomas, I'm wondering if one could use an Emory board in a pinch to sharpen a knife blade? Have you ever tried this. I was thinking that one could cut one down to fit into their survival Altoid can. Thanks.

      You can use the bottom of a coffee cup.

    • @realbroggo
      @realbroggo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many people use wet & dry paper to sharpen their blades. I use it occasionally when sharpening my convex blades. An emery board is not too dissimilar. However, there are three issues. 1) The bonding between the emery particles & the board needs to be good else the particles will just displace when rubbed against hard steel leaving you with a stick. 2) The size of the emery particles needs to be considered. If too large or too small will not be suitable for sharpening. I use 240, 400 & 600 grit wet & dry as required. 3) The hardness of the emery needs to be considered. Genuine emery is actually aluminium oxide which is a suitable abrasive to sharpen most blades HRC62 & under. However, some 'emery' boards on the market use cheaper & softer alternatives (eg. powdered glass) which won't be suitable. Overcome these issues and I can't see why you couldn't use an emery board as a compact sharpening tool. Buy one & try it on a cheap knife. Have a great day.

    Hey DCA. Love watching your knife center vid's. You guys do a great job! Keep it up! Question, what's up with DC53 steel. Just saw a couple knives that had it and did a google search and it is supposedly a upgraded D2 tool steel. Is this true? Would love to hear what you have to say. Thanks

    • @realbroggo
      @realbroggo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've only had limited exposure to DC53 but can make a few comments. First, while can be compared to D2 don't think of it as a D2 analogue as it's composition & heat treatment are sufficiently different. Notably it has less carbon, chromium & vanadium. Keeping it simple, it can take a higher HRC (up to 64) than D2 (up to 62) but despite that, it doesn't really hold an edge much longer due to lower edge stability. I don't recommended for angles below 18 deg due to propensity for rolling - meaning it's also not the sliciest. However, despite the higher hardness, it has smaller carbides making it easier to sharpen than D2 and takes a 'smoother' edge than D2. The reduced chromium and small carbides make it notably tougher than D2. DC53 is more likely to roll as opposed to D2's tendency to chip. Toughness is about same as AUS8/8Cr. Reduced chromium means that it's not stainless. Is there anything wrong with DC53 - no providing you don't pay too much for it (it's a low-mid end steel & I value it similar to D2). Would I recommend DC53 over D2 - for folders no due to edge stability, for fixed blades yes (mainly for the improved toughness) but only if no other steels available as there are better performing steels out there. If you like some steel variety in your diet get a blade with DC53 and give it a try. Hope this helps. Have a great day.

    Alot of these knife makers need to come back to earth with these prices. None of these materials are precious metals. None of them have hundreds of dollars of material in them. I don't begrudge anyone making a profit, very much for the free market. But doesn't mean it's a good look either.

    • @MikeJ602
      @MikeJ602 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re thinking in terms of materials alone not the time and effort it takes to make it pivot cut lock up and unlock flawlessly multiple times daily for years

    • @Alexander-ji1hh
      @Alexander-ji1hh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MikeJ602 no, I'm not. The vast majority of these knives have less than $40 dollars worth of material. I've been a mechanic for the last decade, that involves fixing and making alot of things with materials. i know what blanks and ingots of these metals cost, and that's not taking into consideration the insane discount they no doubt get by purchasing in bulk directly. And you're not going to convince me that they need 400,500,600 dollars ontop of materials to make a liner lock, the most basic lock there is with a 3 inch blade. I'm not arguing they should be 50 dollars. But 600? Give me a break. And if that doesn't make you think twice then that's wonderful, you're their favorite type of person.

    • @realbroggo
      @realbroggo ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've been in and out of the industry for a number of years. While pricing factors vary between makers (eg. where they're located, their size, etc.) there are some generic factors. 1) Despite your observations materials can be a significant factor. Makers are at the mercy of suppliers (like you are as a mechanic) and some deliberately reduce availability to maintain high prices; some just charge what they like because they can and others are often trying to recover other costs such as R&D into new materials or building a new factory. 2) Labour & administrative overhead costs can be a significant factor. Labour in some countries is simply more expensive that others. More time & effort equals more cost. Taxation, tariffs & similar can be significant administration factors. 3) Distribution costs - not just transport - but markups on the way. The wholesaler buys from the manufacturer and adds their costs and a profit margin. The wholesaler sells to the retailer who adds their costs and a profit margin. While some makers charge way too much for what they're offering, however, it's my experience that the makers themselves are the least offenders. It's the other factors which really add to the cost of a knife. Please have a great day.

    • @Alexander-ji1hh
      @Alexander-ji1hh ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @realbroggo I don't disagree, if you'll notice the language I used " majority " "alot". I absolutely left room for some rare occasions. But your point also falls apart when you can find a manufacturer using the same materials and producing a very similar knife for hundreds less because one considers themselves a "premium " company. If you have been in the industry as you claim then you'll absolutely know that many companies make a very specific choice to market themselves as "high end" by having prices at a certain point, it's common business technique across all of sales, people feel like they're getting a premium item simply because it's more expensive than someone else's product. It's a marketing strategy that they can absolutely use in a free country. Just doesn't work on everyone.

    • @realbroggo
      @realbroggo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Alexander-ji1hh No offence was intended and was wasn't trying to absolve the makers of blame - just make people realise that prices are driven by more than just the maker. Your comments regarding the marketing aspects are very accurate - especially for the larger firms. Being accepted as a 'premium' brand by the market absolutely gives you more room to charge more with minimal risk of reduced sales. In fact companies will leverage anything that desensitises customers to price increases. Do makers exploit loyalty - unfortunately, yes. Anyway, I really do mean have a great day and take care.

    P.s. Thomas, I can't believe you let that one go! Mr Seeanderson said you were being quiet and you DIDN'T say something like, "I don't get paid to talk!"?? You're slipping, brother! 😉

      The Synergy is very ugly, I wouldn't even want to carry that thing for free. The Vision and Strike are both very cool, though.

    You pronounced the word for the handle material "grivory" two different ways. It should rhyme with "ivory". Just sayin'. 🙂

      That is the way I always historically pronounced it, but I have heard so many company reps pronouncing it the other way that it occasionally creeps into my words lol -DCA
