This is what cosmic horror is supposed to sound like.

actually the closest that the music got to cosmic horror in sci-fi movies is Ligeti's soundtrack for 2001 space odyssey. that being said, this one is really really good as well.

I never get scared beyond brief, laughable jump scares in movies, but that entire bear scene was one long, profoundly horrifying moment I will never forget. I can't believe the level of anxiety that a work of fictional media induced, but there it was. Annihilation did it beautifully.

My wife and I had to see this movie in a dumpy theater, because it was being pulled from all the major cinemas. When the bear scene came, we were both completely invested, but we began to hear something strange. There were these voices that sounded like a pop choir in the background of the scene, and it didn't seem to match the tone. Turns out we were hearing the Greatest Showman playing next door as the bear ripped the EMT's face off.

At 8:10, there is a resolve in the chords that is so fascinating to me. Every other measure in this long track sounds dire and tense, but in that one there's something positive, the moment when things incomprehensible are accepted.

    • @Trancenmetal
      @Trancenmetal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The movie is definitely explainable. It took me 7 times in theaters to be able to see every moment’s meaning, but I assure you, every detail is significant and valuable to the message. It’s been awhile but like I said, I saw it so many times I should be able to give a comprehensive general interpretation.
So, on a macro level, the movie is about cancer. Dr Ventress had cancer and Lena is a microbiologist that specializes in cancer research and also teaches it. The movie alludes to the destructive nature of the disease and how it affects host. Also on a macro scale, there are deep set themes of self destruction which are placed heavily throughout the film.
On a micro scale, we have a movie about extra terrestrials unlike it is normally portrayed. We mostly see authors and movie creators approach the subject of “first contact” as humans meeting extra terrestrial beings for the first time (whether it being a good meeting or very bad meeting).
But Annihilation reveals at the end that the alien is actually more like a phenomenon rather than an actual creature itself. It's not self aware/sentient so it doesn't know it exists at all. This phenomenon can be best described as a deeply random and esoteric process of changing all DNA it comes in contact with, and it becomes stronger and stranger the closer the DNA gets to the meteor crash location epicenter. The DNA changes are profoundly inspired by everything and anything in its surrounding environment, almost like an instantaneous and unyielding evolution.
We see this constantly throughout the film at varying levels. Some examples include : trees on beach + ocean = crystalized trees; bear + screaming victim(Cassie) = bear with human like skull and cry; Kane + soldier he cut to expose intestines = Kane (as well as other characters) develops the soldier’s infinity tattoo as well as his southern accent (heard in his suicide video). Anya + Seeing the soldier with moving intestines= Her DNA change is much like the soldier in the video.
The way in which a living thing is feeling at the time change is being inspired can also affect the direction your metamorphosis goes. Josie decided she did not want to see or fight what was happening to her. She decided to be at peace with knowing the change was inevitable and made a conscious effort to relent without fight. Her change was quick and conclusive and she turned into one of the same tree figures she previously figured out was consistent with human hox genes.
Each character’s backstory has a powerful influence on the way in which the phenomenon meets them. Having a fair amount of knowledge about psychology/mental health is crucial to comprehending these instances. It is alluded to at some point that Josie struggles with mental health issues… more specifically, she was a cutter, and like many cutters, she did so as a coping mechanism, and most likely sought to feel alive… or anything at all for that matter. The experiences she has endured in the shimmer have metaphorically fire-hosed her with emotions after being more acclimated to mental numbness for so long, and with her death she is still granted life now that she is a tree. She was extremely fortunate in her demise.
Anya was a recovering drug addict, and often at times, people who are in recovery develop the feeling that they finally have some control in their life. Lack of self control helps form the relationship between the addict and the substance. I also used to work in EMS (Anya is a paramedic) and the profession choice definitely wasn’t an accident as is truly symbolic to the character Garland has portrayed. A lot of desensitization takes place in an EMS career, it’s a way of making good choices through someone’s emergency without drowning in sadness at the constantness of it, and it requires a serious level of self control. It is a major thing, watching Anya struggle with the loss of her coveted sense of control, and it sent her in a state of psychosis over everything that was happening. Her brain was beginning to break down all the while having to navigate everything that is happening to the group. While I mentioned earlier the movie is rooted in it’s meanings about Cancer, I believe that there is a significant allusion to Dementia and how terrifying the onset of it is.
The psychosis that affects the team is probably my favorite aspect of the film. Here the DNA refraction process is slow and brutal, and they are consciously being witness to the terrifying deterioration of their brains. With Kane, he wasn't even sure if he even used to be a man or not. The sheer level on calm insanity in his monologue was deeply unsettling to me.
Continuing on with charactersz’ backstory and it’s effect on the change… With Dr Ventress, she NEEDED to see what was at the lighthouse with more determination to simply understand than any of the characters. She didn’t have much time left due to her cancer as well as her DNA fighting to change her into something else while she journeys to figure out what the shimmer is. But as the final stages of her metamorphosis are unfolding, her change of heart at understanding the shimmer is, once again, deeply unsettling as she tells Lena that she is beyond wanting to see it anymore. There was no way for her to know that what she would find would be the most disturbing feeling and demise to ever have ever existed, I imagine being diagnosed with Cancer is a beautiful vacation compared to what she is experiencing.
It's here, during Dr Ventress' final stage, that the destruction of the shimmer begins. She is seen spouting out light and molecules, distributing her DNA (which has cancer) and receiving the onslaught on the phenomenon’s changes. The refraction process is strongest where the initial impact happens (here in the lighthouse and can be compared to a "Big Bang" process of this new world) and cell division has become a full on cloning process. Everything that happens during this process gets sucked into the process. A drop of Lena’s blood is seen meeting Ventress’ cloning process and the result is changes that are part Ventress, part Lena and part many things in between.
It's a slow process, this cloning conclusion, and when Lena touches it, her influence on it begins to almost fully take over. Since Lena’s purpose in the shimmer is simply to fight it (which, by the way, is why she isn’t as effected by the shimmer as everyone else), the clone adopts this purpose as well, because it is her in a way. Her will to fight it allows her to manipulate the clone with the granade. Once she has escaped, the clone is left with that will to fight, and it now proceeds to do as Lena would, setting the place ablaze, which in turn further spreads the cancer into everything it burns.
The destruction of everything within the shimmer leads to cell destruction. Kane's clone also has the driving force that lead Kane, which was to find Lena (which we see in the beginning).
Now that the shimmer is gone, all that is left of it is a proverbial shimmer Adam and Eve. Kane the clone, and Lena with her rapidly changing body. Together they will spread this phenomenon to all organisms over time. We see Kane in the beginning drink from the water, and Lena at the end drink from hers. It's now in the water supply and the process has begun again.

I think the loud synthesizers are almost like the composers interpretation of how this thing is communicating
They’re very short phrases and not all that intricate of melodies, sometimes just a single chord. It’s like they’re asking simple questions like “who are you”, or, more interestingly, “who/what am I”

That's how "alien" nature sounds like. The emotion was all over me when I heard these sounds. Werewolves, vampires, ghosts, monsters - they all feel very alike us, comparing to this alien and this music that just overwhelms you with feeling that this thing does not belong here. And you can also kind of hear that there is no harm intention in him. He just plays, this is what existence means for him. But you know that he is death for you and for your world. All this, perfectly balanced in sound. Thank you guys

The track sounds organic and inorganic at the same time. You are supposed to feel something, but don't know what it is. Sometimes the sounds sound like a distorted voice made by some"thing". There is humming but you never really hear the voice breathing in, or if it is just one voice or multiple voices. Hell, it isn't even exactly music, just some sounds.
