Jason was my first crush. This movie gave me so much. I developed a love for whales, a love for the entire west coast, a love for native American culture , and a love for Michael Jackson.
Beautiful movie, we don't have these types anymore today. There are "great movies " but they seem dull and don't have the same cultural impact as the ones in past decades.
Saw this movie in the theater when I was 11 years old and it was very powerful and moving. Little did I know at the time but it very much inspired me early on to want to work with and help kids like Jesse when I became an adult. Sure enough that's just what I've been doing for the last 20 years or so of my adult life. It's been a very rewarding though also sometimes very painful experience in situations where you feel powerless to do more for kids stuck in unfortunate situations. What amazes me the most though is just how well Jason Richter plays the part of an emotionally troubled kid that age. It's pretty spot on I'd say.
I know that they used an animatronic Orca for some scenes where it would be easier not to use Keiko but I’m surprised Jason never actually was able to ride Keiko for the scenes where Jesse gets in the water with him. Childhood ruined.
Trainers who get into the water with orcas have been with them for years and years to develop a bond and trust with the animal. They can’t have some child actor just jump on in with an orca after a few weeks of petting and feeding
This is the early 90s and people were different, and on top of that he is a child actor...absolutely no telling what he went through on a daily basis, im a year younger than him and things are just different now man
He's an introvert, and when you watch the film it's very clear that he was acting because he loved the ACTING. I don't think he was necessarily ready for or willing to talk about his work. He was a boy, and he did a beautiful beautiful job and it was enough for him. Maybe he just didn't feel comfortable analyzing. As an introvert I can tell you that our process is sacred to us. And is meant for our eyes and ears and hearts and souls and ours alone. We don't feel the need to put it out there in such a direct form. I get him.

oh my god i had SUCH A CRUSH on this boy. I just realised that white blonde blue eyed boys were thrown in teen girl's faces in the 90s but this black girl wasn't complaining. I fancied them all - Leo DiCaprio, Jonathan Brandis, Corey Haim
I love Keiko no judges I like keiko more than Jason when I watch all the season of free willy and I think when I was watching this I hread dog feet trying to run lol
I seen all three free willy movies is my most favorite movie and every single free willy cartoon episode as a kid it made me loved whales even more then I ever had before. I still wish I could touch a whale in person.
He’s probably just tired because interviews are often really early in the morning. But I do remember him saying that he liked acting but he ended up not liking it as much due to all the attention he was getting from being a star, getting so much attention wasn’t fun to him.
He's an introvert, 100% An introvert knows an introvert for miles. We can't be forced to express ourselves, it has to come in our own way on our own time on our own terms or we miss the mark. Not because we don't know what we want to say, but because we're not ready. It's that simple. I don't think he's depressed, I think he wants to be in his own head, not in this room at this moment. And that's OK.
