We can see this is a normal place with functioning phone and electricity, and makes us doubt whether or not the Zone is actually as mystical and dangerous as Stalker claims it is. It also helps add weight to Professor's character. Also, it adds a beat of comic relief. When I saw it in a theater, everyone laughed at the part where they all paused and looked at the phone. Tarkovsky had a sense of humor after all.

I love this movie, the fact that we don't know if the zone is real or not really made it for me...why I didn't like the ending
