I had just graduated from college, on campus picking up some items, and preparing to move on to my future. I stopped into the student AC and caught this amazing event. I'll never forget it...
I've been getting into horseracing in the past couple of years, and want to thank you for these. Aside from the fact that this a fantastic bit of history, you know what else is great about these? The sportscasters could actually TALK. Nothing seems forced or an attempt to be memorble -- you can tell these guys love what they do. Wonderful to hear them -- and Anderson's call is memorable as well.
At one point in this broadcast, Jack Whitaker, commenting on first seeing the field, said, "There they are; four horses and Secretariat." Prophetic words, even if a Freudian slip.
I remember watching this race at 8 years old in Chicago. I remember how it was like a party at my friends house. I didn't care about horse racing so I was oblivious to the hubbub. When Secretariat won, everyone was happy. Women were crying and men were jumping up and down. The thing I remember the most was when they garlanded Secretariat with flowers. He kept shaking his head and moving about. A woman at the party smiled and said "Yeah, Secretariat always hates those flowers."
Thank you so much for having this beautiful video from our horse racing history.40 years ago,Secretariat made the impossible possible. He made a dream come true, after so many years of doubt.40 years ago today,he took a strong field and destroyed it.He came to the earth to give us a memory of greatness beyond belief.
thank you indeed. i watched every second of this original broadcast and was a true believer in Secretariat from his 2 yr old campaign on... drove my family nuts. LOL
Bless you, cf! Having watched the coverage the day it happened (and home being his home of Caroline Cty, VA), it's wonderful to be able to see it again. I too am amazed that CBS hasn't released a higher-def version of the coverage that day. We will never see this happen again - he not only had a bigger heart from a physical standpoint, but emotionally as well.
The first Triple Crown race I ever saw, indeed, the first horse race I saw was the 1964 Kentucky Derby won by the great Northern Dancer. Dancer also won the Preakness and was poised to win the Belmont and everyone thought that 1964 would be the year. So did I. It broke my heart to see Northern Dancer fail in the Belmont. I saw Kawaii King and Majestic Prince fail as well. So what Whittaker said was on the mind of everyone who was there that day. That is why what Secretariat did was so shocking.
50 years ago Somethingroyal's Best Son established a record that seems impossible to match: Record times in The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont Stakes.
Great to relive this broadcast - Whitaker, Broun(!) etc, great broadcasters, plus the Horse Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned! He brought be to raciing... *sigh* Thanks for going to the trouble of converting all these segments! Very much appreciated! ---sue h
@umarmaxmas ROFL.... he should have said "if you are looking for a place where this race might be decided, you might want to look to starting gate, because that is the only place where the horses not named Secretariat will be at all relevant."
Ho, ho, ho... My neighbors are used to occasional whoops and hollers from me. I have explained to them it's simply going to happen whenever I am watching horse races on CF's channel again. :D
No matter what race no matter what year there is only secretariat

I grew up listening to Heywood Hale Broun and always greatly admired his perfect use of the English language.
