  • Join me as I give my first impressions of the Pebeo Mirror Effect Kit with 1.2mm marker pen and gold and silver foil. I try the kit with the foil it came with and also with some gold leaf.
I bought my set at the Cass Art store in Edinburgh, but they don't stock this exact item on the website at time of writing so here's an alternative link: www.londongrap...

Many years ago I used to do calligraphy using real gold leaf having written/drawn the letters with the adhesive on a dip pen. The "tricks" we were taught were to use plenty of gilding adhesive so that you got a sort of raised effect, which flattened a bit when dry and just before applying the gold, hold the paper close to your mouth and huff a few breaths onto the area then quickly apply the gold leaf - it worked every time. I've used the same technique with imitation gold leaf, and foil transfer, and it seems to work well. I suspect that the watercolour paper absorbed a bit too much of the glue to work well with the foil, but the real gold is softer and probably thinner so works better.
Anyway, your results were good and I shall now root through my 'discarded' art to see if I can resurrect any pieces with the judicious use of gold foil/gold leaf!

Using the back of a spoon burnishes it better.
