Dog Fighter Flight School Fails 😬 (I try running the Yokomo 870c on an indoor carpet track😅)

  • Ok, so of course the Yokomo YZ-870c Super Dog Fighter was never intended to run on a modern, indoor, high grip carpet track with big jumps.
    That's a given.
Nevertheless, with the right tuning it should be able to set a respectable time around the track. That is, if I could keep it on its wheels! 😩
    Here's how things went:
Started with a completely stock chassis.
    That was bad...very bad. 😯
Tires had no grip, chassis flexed too much on jumps/braking and that caused the belt to skip. But on the flat parts it was smooth, quick and quiet...oh, so very quiet. 🤫
Alright then. Time for some upgrades. 💰 New wheels, carpet tires and some carbon pieces did much to improve things. Yay! No more chassis flex! 👍
And the jumps? Well, the take off is ok.
    It's landing that's the problem! 😉
It wants to nose dive every single time! I have to keep the throttle pinned just to keep it from front flipping after every jump. I've tried all sorts. Drag brake set to 0. Thicker oil. Thinner oil. Ride height adjustments. Moved weight to the rear. They all helped, but it is still far from an easy car to jump. I'm not ashamed to admit I suspect my jumping skills are part of the problem. Maybe I've been spoiled by modern day buggies.
Currently its running stock springs with 700 weight oil in the front, 600 in the back. After much practice and many crashes, the wing is tattered and torn. But I've got it jumping somewhat better.
In my quest for suspension more suited to the demands of modern day tracks, I've attempted to install all sorts of different shocks. Alas, finding something that will work with the stock height shock towers is proving difficult. At the moment there are no very few option parts for the 870c available over here. A few carbon upgrades, yes, but much needed tuning springs, pistons etc are non existent.
But, I'm making progress. Which is good because in a little over a month's time my Super Dog Fighter will be competing against many other Super Dog Fighters at the 2024 G Force Competition Cup. #GFCC
And one of those Dog Fighters will be driven by the Legend himself. 😎
