I've been compiling a list of my fifty-one favorite US city flags, and of those fifty, I have adoption dates for 40. Of those 40, an astounding 27 of my favorite city flags have been adopted in the last six years, since 2016!

I would love to make a video on this! I promised in "Flags of American Cities: Episode 3" that I would update everyone on Spokane's new flag when it was chosen and now it has been. It would be a good to include many of these other flags. I have considered doing "flag news" with updates of flags maybe every few weeks. Your list is awesome by the way! Thank you for sharing. I was gonna say nice things about the Toronto flag, but you convinced me. It's not ugly, but that maple leaf is definitely in the wrong place. Shout out to my favourite city flags of all time... Amsterdam 🇳🇱 and Lisbon 🇵🇹. Cheers.

The Three-leaved Maple is a design found on the old Canadian Blue Ensign and on the Coat of Arms of Québec as green, on the old Canadian Red Ensign and Coat of Arms of Canada as red, and on Coat of Arms of Ontario as gold. So, the Three-leaved Maple doesn't mean Canada, Ontario, and ???, because it IS Canada. Ontario and Québec have the Canadian Three-leaved Maple because at one time Ontario was Upper Canada, and Québec was Lower Canada. So as far as Oshawa is concerned, their Canadian Three-leaved Maple comes from both Canada and Ontario, and there is no third entity (other than themselves). Even the proposed Pearson Pennant had the Canadian Three-leaved Maple.
I was not aware of what you shared here, but according to the three sources of information I was using, none of them mentioned what the three maple leafs mean. Not even the NAVA book I have. Your info here seems very plausible for being the source of these flags and if that is indeed the original intent, it will need to be added to this flags history and meaning. Thanks for sharing!
For the flag of Oshawa they might have chosen three maple leaves for a balanced design and to match the three charges on what looks like a fess wavy gules and the three cog wheels in the chief or top part of the arms.
That is very possible as well. A commenter also told me it might be a traditional Canadian symbol that has meaning beyond what I talked about here or knew about. It was an old Canadian Ensign and on the Coat of Arms of Québec.

It's a pretty outdated notion that the handful of square blocks that Parliament sits on is "Ottawa", and that a city flag for Ottawa must be dominated by the transient federal politics of those few square blocks (as the previous purple, red, blue one did). The 3-stripe nod to the Peace Tower should be enough. Those 3 stripes could also mean the three main rivers that meet in Ottawa (Ottawa, Gatineau, Rideau). Those 3 stripes could also be logs being driven towards Ottawa's formerly dominant wood and pulp industry. Blue and green illustrate the river and green spaces, but also the bilingual nature of a city so close to Quebec. And if you zoom out, that o-swirl could be just an O, or it could also be the "OK" hand gesture or the signal of a chef's kiss. All open to interpretation of course.

Winnipegs flag is what a coat of arms flag should be. Very similar to how it works for Brazil even tho it’s not really a coat.

I like Toronto's flag in person, kinda looks like what Captain Canada would wear in the MCU.
