Selling things can be a real pain. If you hold yourself to it, it can be a deterrent to buying. You think "Ill have to sell this someday" and all of a sudden, you dont want to buy it anymore. ☺

I've been down this road! Thinking my items are worth something to someone.. but actually the time and stress involved is too much to handle for me anymore. I love donating now.

We had a garage sale - lots of furniture, lamps, purses, gems, etc - 10 years ago before moving into a much smaller house. I learned that I didn’t like seeing people take away my things. I much preferred dropping them off at donation centers, where I never saw who took my things. And I hated the way I felt when someone offered half of the value I’d put on an item. Just give the stuff away and bless somebody!

Sometimes we can't drive ,have chronic anxiety with going to ups and sending things out..all good intentions but it's a relief to just let items go to trash or Anywhere one can get to to donate. Grazie for the permission ❤

Paperwork is usually dreadful to go through because it's so tedious and causes a lot of decision fatigue to look at each and every piece of paper. I used your tip to make decluttering more comfortable by bringing it to my couch and watching TV with my partner at the same time. It would have been hell (and maybe not completed) if I had been in a room by myself with no comfort or entertainment. There were times when I painfully sat on a hard floor going through bins when I could've brought them to a bed or couch to be comfortable during the process.

What helps in deciding to sell or donate: how much time would you spend to sell something and what is your hourly rate in your job.
I love that you mention not to donate TRASH! I worked with a donation center and they waste so much time throwing away dirty or broken things

Hi Sarah, Happy New Year! I have been trying to become more minimal for years with slow but sure progress. In 2024 I FINALLY achieved a milestone. I have tried to complete the month long minimalism game for years but always fell short and stopped before completing. My husband does not like to get rid of anything so I was limited to things that were mine and I would talk myself out of finishing thinking if he did not declutter, it would not make a difference. Well, I completed 31 days today, decluttering just my possessions and I feel great. The house feels cleaner and more spacious as do the closets, cupboards and drawers. I just had to share this victory with someone and encourage anyone who is in a similar circumstance to go for it!

When living with roommates (or spouse/kids) who do not embrace minimalism (they’re slobs and the stress is getting to you), the only thing I’ve found that works is putting blinders on, and only paying attention to my stuff. My bathroom, my office, my closet, my car…

A system that works for me with textiles is that I have some small collapsible laundry baskets that I use as a recycle, donate or reuse pile (I am a sewer). Anything shoddy goes straight to recycling, useable goes to donate and certain fabrics I need for particular projects goes into the third basket. The baskets are intentionally small so that they must be emptied regularly. It works for me. I have less clutter in my wardrobe.

Great video, great advice. It is so much easier to take a drawer at a time rather than the whole kitchen. Keeping a designated donate spot. I have also found that all the time trying to recoup dollars by selling items is not worth it. I donate to thrift shop where funds go help the local animal shelter. I want to give them so much more since it is helping pets in need. Thank you for your years of great advice!

I separate clothing, towels, and other fabric items that have stains, rips, or would just not sell and I bag them as recycle. St. Vincent DePaul takes this to be recycled. Hefty has a new program in several states to recycle normally non recycle items such as plastic straws, drink cups, Styrofoam, fruit and vegetable bags, cereal box liners, pet food bags, plus almost all plastic film. Now my recycle bin goes out every week and my trash only goes out to the landfill every 3-4 weeks.

Totally agree with the "donate not sell" approach. Only worth it for expensive items, not for small stuff. In my neighbourhood we put stuff in boxes next to the pavement and everyone takes what they like. Not exactly legal, but it works.

The hacks you share are helpful. I have used most all of them. Doing 2023 year end paper review/declutter so I grabbed a stack from the bin and brought them to the dining room table and a comfortable chair, pleasant area and the sun is shining. I chose to watch your video as a reward for reviewing them. Then, in real time, you recommend taking things to a comfortable spot and limiting the time spent :) 💕

Thanks for talking about not donating garbage! Its so important to mention. Sometimes its really better to just throw things away (and buy more intentional next time!). And if you are donating to an organization, always ask what they need first, dont just dump your stuff for them to deal with. Great video👏🏻👏🏻 I never declutter without entertainment 😂

When we started decluttering, we played trash or treasure. We started with one box. It was exciting to clean out that box. The next day we did two boxes. We got into it and ended up decluttering that room in less than two weeks. The buyer wants a great bargain. The seller just wants to get rid of it. Donating is so much less effort.

Happy new year, Sarah! I'm slowly trying to get back into some decluttering after a total stinker of a year. I have now got my teaching resources down to a Doc Martens box, plus a box of my favourite children's storybooks. I was also holding onto a folder detailing a reading programme I implemented in 2006!! I finally shredded it all and got rid of the folder in late 2023. It felt great and I have no regrets about getting rid. I hope the start of 2024 has been kind to you and Jake. 😊

I see this do just a tiny bit at a time thing constantly but I don't get how anyone can stand that. When I realized I wanted to be minimal, I tore through my house & got it done. I could not imagine having that project hanging over my head for literal years. I'd just go crazy. I needed to just get it done and be done. I guess do whatever works for you but the thought that I couldn't just do it and be finished would've deterred me from ever even starting. I'm a get it done and over with right now kind of girl. Lol

Yes I love your ideas as well. I do have some different avenues for selling stuff and I have made money although it takes some effort and time on Facebook marketplace as well as when my town has its town wide garage sale days where everyone who wants to have a garage sale has it at the same time which draws more people in etc etc. Then I'm lucky that if nothing else I can take it to our church circulation day where we put out everything for free and then you just let it go to ever need something and that's very satisfying.

Selling an item is so much trouble now days. Something to think about when bringing that item toba location-dangerous. Mailing an item-more money. Just let it go. Call an organization to pick it up. Its ok. Trying to make money at a garage sale is crazy. The people who are there want it for free. It takes days to organize it and watch it then your still left with your stuff. Throw it out or donate it.

  • @ldg0324
    @ldg0324 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree that donating is easy and faster at ridding yourself of the clutter. I have a friend who does have high end items and she is successful at selling them more times than not, however she has invested a lot of time over the years perfecting how she does it and the items can sit in her house/garage for months before she lists them. But, it works for her - but not for me. I want it gone immediately to feel the reward of the decluttering. And, I can write off values on my taxes, which takes less time to value.

I do a fast 15 minute tidy twice a day - one just before bed. Set my timer and put all little odds and ends back in their homes. It doesn’t need to be declutterring but it will show you where new items have accumulated and don’t have a home or clutter rubbish has accumulated in areas. It’s been a good habit to get into (for me anyway).
