The only reason i stuck around, to see him wink. i liked the headbanging that came after that. i couldn't really watch this whole piece though, i felt it was boring until the finale.
the performance that made me want to become a musician. a person can feel *this happy, and make others happy through his it.. everything good about Yo-Yo Ma right here.
У меня большая потеря: столько лет потеряла .Я и не знала,что есть такой гениальный музыкант.Думала,что один только Ростропович.Этот музыкант просто чудо. Необыкновенно.У меня слезы.
From 1990 to 2011. What a jem, I Saw Yo Yo Ma rehearse this with the BSO this morning August 9, 2014, in at Tanglewood at Lenox, MA. Awesome. Live is always better than a recording, and every preformance brings it's own interpretation, but still incredable. Though it is three years later thanks for posting this.
This is the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonia (now St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra), Yuri Temirkanov conducting, in the Grand Hall of the Philharmonia. They installed a new organ since that time so the Hall looks a bit differently now.
Pyotr Tchaikovsky dedicated his Variations On A Rococo Theme to Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, a renowned soloist, who gave the first performance of Rococo on November 30, 1877. Wikipedia has a very interesting story revolving around Tchaikovsky's composition and Fitzenhagen's variations (see their biographies), and on the eventual, published 1889 full score. Perhaps Yo Yo Ma's "cheeky wink" suggests something equally as entertaining, on this night in Leningrad at Tchaikovsky's 150th birthday.
Absolutely you sweat. In an orchestra you're shoulder to shoulder, wearing a suit, so unless the space is extremely cold, it's hard not to work up a bit of a sweat. This may not hold for those wearing dresses, of course!
Tbf when this piece was first written it was quite normal for the audience to clap whenever they felt like it. Sort of like what happens in pop and jazz concerts today. Fitzenhagen even mentioned in a letter to Tchaikovsky that he had a standing ovation for the 4th variation (which is now canonically the last) in the premier of this piece.

stradgirl; me too.
Mine was Foreigner 4 "Urgent"....the saxophone solo.
Me too.
Ditto
Yo-Yo Ma the best living cellist.
After hearing his Bach cello-suite in G, that definitive interpretation, that's when i assumed that 'Ma was the BEST!
Maybe the greatest instrumentalist on any instrument in all history. Every millimeter of that Stradivari’s finger board is his close personal friend.
not a strad its a Montagnana
He has both, I can’t remember if I checked which one this is. It’s from a long time ago. The Strad isn’t his it is on lifetime loan.

Ростропович действительно был великим музыкантом.
I love how you can feel the elation in the audience at the end. Magnificent performance of, in my opinion, one of the greatest pieces ever written.

What a marvelous rendition of this beautiful Tchaikowsky piece!
To all of you making remarks about his facial expressions. Why don't you try to play that amazingly with a straight face. Oh right you cant

I came here to see Yo Yo Ma's play and fascinated at the flute player, too
Fabulous performance! I was deeply touched not only by the music, but also by his facial expression and body language! What a master!
No words needed...
This is such a lovely piece. A shame we don't hear it more often.

Not while performing this waste of time, Armchairman! I do hope you know that you don't play guitar in an armchair...unless you're a complete idiot!
