6 Mts, I call this band, “The crazy Band”. One time I spend one hold afternoon
with a open squelch in my radio; and then open for 15 minutes, and I make
contacts with Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and
    Galapagos Isl.

I'm bored of contests. It really makes a mockery of the true spirit of what radio communications should be about. It's just bragging rights and an endless torrent of '5-9's' completely pointless. I'd much rather have a proper chat with another friendly operator, and screw the contesters.

@Colin Baker On CW contests, you must still be able to copy--very often 30 WPM or more. Many of my countries are from contests. They are also a good measure of a station's capability. I am a casual contester who will never win, but I have fun.

I modified a public service surplus FM transceiver that operated on 47 megacycles. To operate on 47 megacycles to 54 megacycles. But it is FM only. The man I modified the radio for has never claimed his radio. It has been over a year. With many telling me that six meters is seeing some activity, I have been curious to turn the radio on. I know most DX is LSB and mostly USB. But, I wonder if there are any rougues that are using FM for DX? I guess there is no rule against using FM for DX. It just seems that many on the radiowaves are conformists and do not want to try the obviously different. But surely someone on the planet should be transmitting 6 meter FM for DX on a vertical antenna. I can not transmit because I have no license. There is no rule against using the radio to listen. It is not as if anybody will know if I am listening without a license. Besides, the guy that left the radio owes me some money for modifying the radio and it is one and a half years overdue. Surely he is not going to mind me plugging it up for a listen.

Just today a gun club member and club friend called me and said "I have 3 antennas in the boxes that were given to me". He went on to say, he has had them in the garage for over a year, and if I want them, pick them up. I did, and WOW, Free. A 5-BTV, a CHA250B, and a Cushcraft A50-3S. All still in the boxes, never opened. Anyway, I am thinking about the 6m, but not sure if its worth me buying a rotator for it, I can't remember the last time I was on 6m. Hmm!!

Tricked you into going off frequency huh? That is when a waterfall comes in handy. yOU can see if the other frequency is clear or not. You could also put it in the other VFO then monitor it momentarily while staying on your main frequency. But that was a crap thing to do to another ham and is one of the reasons I don't like contests.

Be sure to check 53.670- 103.5 KD2SL! 100watts out of a giant Batwing array antenna originally used for analog TV! The thing crosses state lines in the worst conditions and during summer it is VERY popular. Kevin, the man with the plan is a great guy! He has details on his website. The thing is at 100watts partially because going any higher might cause the repeater to become not just an Upstate NY repeater but an upper East Coast one!

The thing is, 6 meters is open for 2-3 weeks in the summer solstice and a couple weeks in December at the winter solstice.
Summer is usable may-july but there is about 2 weeks where 5 watts will allow you to work the world. This month, you probably won't hear a single person. Always start at 50.313MHz and if you hear FT8 signals, scroll down to 50.125MHz and call CQ

Ron, the 6m band is part of HF radios, and the (now discontinued) FT-857D, which is called an all mode radio. A VHF/UHF radio is 2m/70cm, and not 6m. Your best bet for a good radio that gets 6m is the same model he is using--Yaesu FT-450. For the price, you can't get better filtering, ease of operation, front graphs and performance in an HF/6m base.

When you were tuning around 50.068 mhz (at 11:36), the cw you heard was a beacon station. They're usually low powered stations that hams put on the air that other hams use as indicators as to where 6 m is opened to at any given time. They're all slow speed cw, so a little effort put into learning cw can give some indication if and to where the band may be opened.

At the time of this video years ago that was the only radio I had to show that unit on a seperate video, also it is programmable with more memory for different messages..

@@HamRadioConcepts totally understand. Personally, I have had better performance on the built in Voice Keyers but understand about the more memories and features on the MFJ. Several years back, built in voice keyers in rigs werent available and the MFJ's were the only options.keep up the good work !

I’m really wanting to getting my ticket but, I have no money or the smarts to do the exam. I have been on 11 meters using a jumbo radio and a 25 ft antenna on a pole for ages. I use protocol and not a hindering to others. I am always polite and does not abuse the other operators or for that matter, anyone. Is it ( apart from illegal ) really necessity to have a piece of paper telling everyone I can turn on a rig and knows how to use it ? Interested in your thoughts on this matter.
    Cheers mate.

Enjoyed this band in the 80s and 90s living in England when it was used for band 1 tv channels. Would have nothing but snow on the screen, Then 30 seconds later a strong testcard from a tv station in Russia, Spain, Italy and all over.

6 meters is pretty useless, which is why nobody uses it. The "band opening" which happens infrequently and sporadically is the only salient feature of the band. 6 meter repeaters located on a mountain about 40 miles from me require 100 watts and a large antenna in order just to kerchunk. Meanwhile, 2 meter repeaters on the same hill I can hit with 5 watts and a rubber duck. Furthermore, there is a 440 repeater about 120 miles from me at 14000 feet that I can hit from inside my bedroom with an HT and 1 watt.

Well I made 2 contacts today mobile at 100 watts over 2000 miles on each contact..
This summer, well, please look at my “TH-cam shorts” you will see tons of contacts while mobile on 6 meters.

@@HamRadioConcepts Well, like I said, the "band opening" phenomenon is the only salient feature of the band. For FM it's pretty useless and impractical. There's a reason why everyone uses 2 meters. It's the perfect balance of range, clarity, antenna size, and power requirements. Actually 220 is moreso.. but that's another story.

Bill-N6EF-Great video. @14:40-The exact same thing happened to me on a POTA activation. The guy was even nice enough to spot me on the new frequency only to find there was a net on the new frequency. I wasn't happy and moved back to my original frequency and sat there for the next 3 hours racking up contacts. I won't fall for that again. This has me interested in 6M which I've never worked before.

When I was in Central Florida in the late 70's the running joke for those active on meters among hams was do you have your W.A.N award, work all neighbors. at that time local TV stations were on vhf low hand and Hams interfering on 6 meters on local channels was quite often. With better tv's and switch much of TV to UHf, now a differnt story
