- THRIFT Stores Full of ANTIQUE & VINTAGE Treasure! | GOODWILL SHOPPING to Resell
So nice to be in a place with good thrift stores! I'm shopping with @YvonThriftyRich in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where a bunch of locally based thrift stores are giving Goodwill a run for their money...and providing us great antiques and vintage we can flip for a profit!
Shop with us at four different thrift stores as we ferret out some fabulous finds loved by collectors! Our first stop is the Arc, where a $1.29 buy on a Josef Figurine gets us started. Even though TH-cam super shoppers @RALLIROOTS shopped this thrift not long ago, this place gets a ton of donations, and they leave the vintage for us to find! Lane Laminate tables, a Gay fire truck and a Mercedes driving bear all vie for our attention.
Then it's on to another local thrift store, where we pile up vintage costume jewelry priced 1/5 of retail! A Heisey Greek Key pitcher, a Charlie Brown afghan and a whole lot more antique and vintage wares make us glad this is not a national chain...the things they get (and the money they earn) all stay here for our benefit.
Goodwill comes next, and there are some deals to be had as the carts come out for afternoon restocking...but our favorite find is already in someone else's cart! No matter, though. there's enough goodies in this town's thrift stores to share the wealth. From there, we hit our last stop, a small local thrift chain whose attractive layout and themed boutiques belie the low prices we find on Royal Doulton china, a sand scene bottle and a Western brands lamp. What a fun day of bargain hunting!

George, you are such a thoughtful guy. Just want to say thanks. Always good to see someone that is gracious and giving. I was at an estate sale last weekend and the prices were ridiculously high, they weren't priced so when I asked I put them back and the seller was angry at me. I was gracious and told him I was a reseller. He was mad that I wouldn't buy. Sometimes you have to walk away. I wasn't rude at all but he was. I don't think I'lll be back to his sales.

Hi George . The Mt. Rushmore art piece may have been done by cartoonist Gahan Wilson. He was well known. Published in The New Yorker, Playboy and National Lampoon. He died in 2019 at the age of 89.
I thought of that, but I always liked Gahan Wilson and the signature seemed different to me

That was great seeing you & Yvon fight over who gets what, but in a good way! I bought a couple of the paper mache Mexican figures awhile back for $4 each & sold them at my booth for $12 each. They're actually a little creepy looking, in my opinion, but they sold pretty fast. That fish...well...as Michael from The Cult of Vintage says, it's trashtastic!

Good evening, George! The 1920s buffet was a nice one. There's no way I'd put paint on it. Covering that wood grain would be like putting Mother Nature in a gaudy body bag. Loved the cuckoo clock. Love the Heisey "Greek Key" pitcher. To me, Heisey is the pinnacle of clear glass. That seemed a really good price for the Czechoslovakia vase. Mother has a few of those papier mache' figures. She's had them probably since the 1980s. Those thrift stores were all well-stocked, and the items didn't look to be a pile of rubbish, either. Even the Goodwill had a good selection. I caught a glimpse of what looked to be a chess board there. That would've really got my interest...love chess sets. That was refreshing to see thrift stores, (especially a Goodwill), actually having nice items for the local customers! Lots of fun!!! Thanks for the take-along!!!!!
I know people are converting them to bathroom vanities, painting and otherwise altering them, but I wouldn't have touched that one, it was iimmaculate! The hard part with painting furniture is taking it off later when styles change back to preferring natural wood. The Greek Key was such an amazing bargain, and it's their most distinctive early pattern in my humble opinion. The Czech vase was sweet, and the Mexican papier mache figuress (which I haven't cared for in the past) somehow struck me as more interesting when clustered without bric-a-brac around them. Yvon certainly is blessed, when the Goodwill is good you know the other thrifts have potential too lol. I'm glad it was fun, we had a good time and I'm glad it showed!
@@TheAntiqueNomad Even if the paint can effectively be removed from an old piece of furniture, you're never able to get the original finish/patina back. Once it's painted, the original finish is lost. If they're veneered, even removing the paint can be almost impossible, without the veneer coming off, too. That "Greek Key" pitcher was a steal of a deal. I've had a few pieces of Heisey, (wish I still had some of them), and. without it being lead crystal, it is the clearest glass I've seen. Mother got her papier mache' figures on a trip to Mexico many years ago. I kind of like the rustic, folk art appeal they have. I have to admit, I was a bit surprised at the Goodwill being that good. Yvon certainly is blessed to have such good resourcing outlets.

Also, look for Nintendo games with mario/luigi/yoshi. They sell high especially for systems original Nintendo, Super Nintendo and N64. I am an avid collector❤

The drawing of Mount Rushmore by “Wilson” may be Gahan Wilson well known cartoonist…..I think I’ve seen his work in New Yorker for instance.

The sideboard could also be used as a bathroom cabinet. Putting two above counter sinks and a marble top after painting or not is a one of a kind item.
28:30 I bought that castle for some cousins years ago, brand new in packaging. And yes I shipped it, not cheap to do but they made three birthday cakes with that pan.
365 VS 395 UV LIGHT. I have a flashlight that has both settings plus you can move the end down to concentrate the beam. It will pick up manganese, selenium, cadmium etc. Worth every penny

I always check out the clear "garbage bags" - found a whale tooth eskimo carving by Arne Tjomsland in a bag of kids' toys - didn't know what it was initially (had a sticker with his initials only) but I liked him. Sold for hundreds in a few hrs! So now, I never ignore those bags. Great video, as always!
It's true, time permitting there's real opportunity in them (although you'll look at a lot of hair curlers and small fasteners in the process). The woman at the store in my last video with Yvon said she found an 18k ring in one! Congratulations on your good fortune, that's a pretty good artist to find all right!
18:07 Those copper repousse images were Judaica, schetl (spelling probably way off) imagery. Still made in Israel well into the 70s.

George, if you ever want to be REALLY disappointed in thrifting, especially at all the Goodwills, come to the greater Portland, Maine area! It’s the worst!
I'm surprised in a way, I equate Maine with old stuff but it also depends how they're run, who donates and the competition for old things shopping them
@@TheAntiqueNomad I live in the greater Portland area. It’s a different culture here. There are more and better opportunities up north in the small towns than there are here. I travel a lot for that, but it’s harder in the winter.
Lane furniture is super easy to date. Sometimes right down to the month and date of manufacturer. Check the marks and there are sites where you can date them.
I had heard that! It's a lot like Homer-Laughlin china of the 1940s.
My daughter lives about 20 mins west of Denver and she has the best thrift stores and antique stores by her.

My local thrift stores are Value Village and the Goodwill, the Goodwills stopped putting out jewelry years ago when they launched their own auction style website, Value Village does put out jewelry but it is junk and when it isn't junk they price it retail. Yvon is lucky that her thrifts are apparently not doing it.

George, I recognize that bread necklace! I believe it's from Africa. I got several in Uganda; the beads are made from rolled paper. These are often made by women as their sole source of income.

Oh yes! I agree. I need to get Yvon to explain to Crazy Lamp Lady, but I do understand it better now that I realize American Raku is not the same as Japanese
I used to do Raku in college, and some methods are different. But it seems when people mass produce pottery the manner of production is different. Many times people who are collectors depend on the seller for a better explanation of the manufacturing. It is a small part of what makes us more helpful to the clients. Yes ,l have been to many sales meetings, and glass is her favorite medium.

It's so heavy that it'll go to a booth or a show, not online to ship! I think we foolishly left the glove holders, I didn't know I had collectors until I showed them in this video

Got excited about the Lane Acclaim tables at 8:00. MadCityModern (youtube)does a series of 2 refinishing videos on a few Acclaim pieces; the coffee, side, high-low side table and the triangle lamp table all with that distinctive top. Fifty dollars for two sides seems like a real deal and they look fabulous when refinished; pure MCM goodness! Thanks for the video, always fun to shop along.

I sell it well in the places I've always sold kitchenware well...the Northwest customer is very practical, and it sells in the Midwest. I take pieces from Florida to those places to sell

Hi George, do you ever make it out to SC? There is so much history here. I went to a yard sale about a month ago, and found a 1943 Army helmet, and an early 1900's Black Americana share cropper cast iron bank I believe made by Hubley. I paid $6 for both
There are really amazing things in SC from what I hear! I wish to see Charleston, one of the few amazing old American cities I haven't seen. I think I need to find an appraisal fair or show to do there
