    My grandpa made me help him build perches out of 2x4's since I was little in 1985. He has raised chickens for over 50 years now so he'd know what works that's for sure.

    We just took delivery of our 8x12 building that we’ll be converting to a chicken coop. I’ve been so torn about flat or round roosting bars, so this video helped tremendously. I don’t believe I’d ever heard about the roosting bars being higher than the nesting boxes either, so I’m glad I found this video before going all out with the build, that was valuable info. Chicks are still young and not quite ready for the big coop yet, so I have several weeks to get this right. Thanks for sharing.

    I use 2x4s in the same manner, because even though the chickens cannot grip the perch, they have no trouble getting themselves onto the board. During winter months, the chickens can lay directly onto their feet, keeping them warm.

  • @anniemartin3531
    @anniemartin3531 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I use 2x4's for perches my chickens prefer them. The only problem I've had is the 2x4 will eventually bow in the middle. Hindsight 20/20 I should of put in a center brace as the chickens tend to choose the straight perches over the bowed one.

    Son, my Grandmaw, Momma, all of the Old Folks that I was around did what they did for a reason....It Works! A 2x4 is fine....A Chicken dont give a flip about what it sits on, heck I had a few that roosted on barn roofs with a pitch...some to get in locust trees with thorns on em. We never lost eggs cause of where the chickens were sleeping unless somethin got one off a roost fer dinner. Good Job! If it suits you let em sleep on it wherever and whatever it is. Many Blessings

Then I went to your site and started watching your journey all the way to Florida. Struggles y’all had a few but you kept persevering. Interesting & good information. Many many years ago I always saw 2x4s used as perches, and thought nothing of it. Recently, I've seen the same ideas that 2x4s are too big and to use round perches to mimic what they'd have in the wild. I just went with thick branches because they were free. Hens seems happy with them, and I won't have to worry about the lower temperatures you'll have in winter. I might have to put a 2x4 and a tree limb side by side and see which one they chose someday.
    Now you got me thinking that one type of perch may not be best for all breeds of chickens. Bigger chickens might want/need bigger perches versus little silkies or smaller breeds with much smaller feet. And hey, at least our chickens are getting perches, all the big meat and laying chicken operations don't have any perches for them. Thanks!

    • @diyfferent
      @diyfferent  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, your setup looks like it's working great. The best solution for me may not be the best for someone else, every flock and situation can be different. I actually considered using branches for perches...since we have a lot of them laying around, but in the end I went with the 2x4's and am happy with them. It would be interesting to see what your chickens would choose between the two choices.

    well said Doug and Ashley..... i have just one small concern about your coop and it is with your step at the doors to get in. being hollow it opens up for a place for rodents to breed . what you could do is make it so that one or more of the slats removable so you can clean and or put poison in. other than that it's a fantastic coop .

    Hi guys. I just built a chicken coop by looking at pics on Pinterest. I'm not a carpenter or anything like that by any means but I think it turned out ok. Expensive, but ok. :) Its small, 4'wide X 8' long, and tall enough to stand in. I had been wondering on how to do my roost and this video of yours was just what I needed. It made sense to me and that's the way I made them. My hens are only about 2 months old, and not use to a coop. They been in a small cage all this time, so they didn't know how to get up on the roost but they'll learn in time. Also your video on the Trap Door was great as well. Its also how I built mine, well, not as good as yours but it works. You make it look so easy, I like that! I also got tickled at your wife having the hiccups. Lol. Thanks for all the advice you share with us, you two! :)

    I wondered about the width of the roosting perches when I saw them in the previous video, but I didn't comment as my experience with caged birds doesn't include chickens.
    A time-lapse video might be good for showing which perches the chickens prefer to use when various sizes are provided. :)

    That was a wonderful explanation of the different types of perches and more importantly, why particular types of perches might be better than others. I don't know much about chickens other than I like my eggs poached and my chicken fried or baked. I always wanted to have chickens but i'm in downtown Louisville and I think my neighbors might not appreciate the clucking and 5:am alarm of a rooster. See you next time!

    My chickens, told me they rather lay down on a wide board above their nesting boxes, some will sleep in the boxes I always put newspaper down, n in the nesting boxes for now , they are to young to lay eggs, every morning I remove the news paper, I wash n clean the coop once a week if needed, my birds don't lay on each other they have plenty of room. They are very happy . They sleep on a 2x6 long board 😴

    So I been raising barnyard chickens for 50 yrs.
    I have flat an round saplings that I use an what you will find is whichever you put the highest is the one they'll choose most of the time.
    Personally imo I cut saplings about 2 1/2 inches in diameter an I've never had a problem with it.
    the problem I have with the flat board is it will get covered in crap alot quicker.
    If your chickens are getting frostbite your coop is to big or needs sealed up.
    Example 4+8 coop will hold roughly 15-20 chickens an your water will rarely freeze in the winter.
    In the warmer months a bigger coop is better imo.

    Thanks for the info and research. We used a smooth rounded 2 x 2 in the coop and we have a thick round natural branch in the run which they use occasionally. I might test a 2 x 4 to in the future to see if they have a preference.

    really excellent video. I don't think you mentioned these points: the smaller size roosts (like a 2x2) don't have as much structural integrity so if you have a longer span you can have some sag. Also, keeping the roosts up to 4' or so makes cleaning the mess much easier (and more of it will be in the same place if the roosts are concentrated in one area). I think the diagonal roosts are a pain to clean around. Sadly, some of my chickens still roost way up in the coop where I fear that they will eventually get hurt. That's on my fix list. My other coop was poorly designed and poop in the nest box is sometimes a thing. Luckily we added a lean-to addition and even though it is colder they prefer to roost out there. We were looking for something with open sides but a roof so that they had a snow free area outdoors in the winter. That has worked well. I can close them in the coop or the lean-to or the entire fixed chicken yard at home (no free ranging at home as various neighborhood dogs have twice broken into my fencing and taken out my entire meat flock). Similar arrangement at the farm with the addition of free ranging (and, unfortunately, varmints but, fortunately, two LGDs).

The coop will be about 15 square ft and 8 ft high, on a 2nd story building with stairs down to the 1st floor (garden). How many chickens do you recommend (MAX)? I'll let them out on the garden when I'm at home.

The next night I found them on the floor of the coop so I removed the 2x4s and the are roosting again on the round perches. I'm not giving up. I might use a router with a 1/2" round off bit to round the edges more than what they are. Not sure if that's a right move or not. What is your thoughts on doing this?

    Also what's not been said.....is chickens don't sleep standing up or up on on their feet like people think. They sleep on their breast bone....hince why you would want a flatter surface for that. So 2X3" or 2X4" is fine.

    I have been using 2x4 and 2x2 on my game fowl for over 40 years less pressure on there feet . round dowels put alot of pressure on there pads which could lead to bumblefoot

    Chickens don’t grip the perch, they like to perch with their feet flat.. absolutely flat perch is the way to go.
