    Great bags for deployments and good bags for car camping. Generally, the little pocket was where you put your deployment orders in. As others have mentioned, the loop on top is usually padlock if traveling by air or bus for additional protection. Like a lot of military gear, it is nigh indestructible.

    I got mine from the curb in my neighborhood for free! The thing was half covered in mold from being in a basement but I washed it and it came out so crisp and clean. Thinking of making an emergency car supplies kit with it. This video was helpful because I didn’t know how to close it or if it was missing a string to go through those grommets.

      @jamesstamper5168 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you put the metal loop thru the square part of the clasp and then put a padlock on it, no way anyone is getting into it without cutting the fabric. When I got mine in boot camp in ‘88 they were navy blue (black) with a single strap. There was no pocket, no button, no pair of padded shoulder straps, just a single strap and a grab handle. Because sailers never had to carry them very far, 1-2 miles at most. Mine had “Stamper, J.” stenciled on the bottom. Because they get stacked horizontally up to 8’ high with just the bottom of the bag showing. So the bottom is where you put the identifying info. Everything had to be folded properly to get it all in the bag. And when not in use, the bag itself had to be folded a certain way and in its proper place.
      After I was discharged, I started using it with a external pack frame for a makeshift camping backpack. The bag is now 35 years old and still functions good as new. There’s nothing to break down with these, no zipper, no pockets, it’s rugged and lasts forever if not mistreated. It’s rain and fire resistant too. But you definitely need a external pack frame for longer hikes.

    I was issued one back in my army days, though in 71 they were made from canvas...atb...woods
    edit...they also did not have shoulder straps, but rather a single long carry strap you slung over a shoulder

      only problem with military bags is that I cannot find smaller ones , I would like to have 50 L versions . I would like to have it for daily trips , to carry it everywhere , 75-100 L is huge . mine is black cordura 1000 DEN , 75 L -like this in video . Honestly never had such durable and quality bag -ruscack before , so easy to carry when I go on daily trips to sea , to dive etc . and sea rocks are hard and sharp here , like knives , only big bags with protection can endure it . I plan to get another one soon , but not this one , there is one 100 L with shoulder straps , 8 big pockes and one department with frame , functional , big and just 60 $ . but nothing beats this one lol , this is THE bag for durability , affordable , simple .. it's just not looking like normal bag , and also it's not functional . I need more pockets , I need also something that looks more normal , with this one i am looking like a guy that goes travel , and I am just going to dive and visit nature here :D . one thing is for sure - there is no more durable and quality made bag out there , and you will never lack space :D , you can go to camping for sure , even with bike or bus . YES , it's so quality made that you can put one on your back and ride a bike with it , easy .. straps are SO quality and will never fell of your shoulders , amazing !! I will buy almost only military bags , it's made to last !!

    • @reformedknight7506
      @reformedknight7506 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are canvas versions also , you can buy it today , no problem . you have black and olive , and also coyote color , canvas . but i like cordura 1000 DEN more , canvas will never get dry :D . and those bags are more expensive , but not much . I like black cordura , but olive is not bag either .

    It's great for 'luxury' bedding. You can pack your softs and mold the entire bag over your frame pack. Another method is to 'x' the shoulder straps through your frame and wrap around your regular pack. Play around. This can easily add a lot of capacity that can be readily dropped or removed, still be organized...as in...you hit your site early, detach, and do your wide perimeter resource check...return and set up...whatever...great bag to have.

    The most efficient way to fill these is to: "fill it up", then grab the handle at the top and give it a few hard jerks towards the ground... that'll open up a new space at the top to fill.
    By the way! i've got several of my zipper duffle bags with four compression straps (current US Army standard issue). i'd love to send you one to review if you'd like.

    I've got one of these bags. They are great utilitarian bags. I use it to store extra sleeping bags and blankets for cold weather camping. Just toss it in the FJ and go. I plan on getting one for my son when he goes to college. Great way for him to store all his dirty clothes for when he comes home to do laundry. lol. Great bag. You can get them on the cheap at most army/navy supply stores.

    Having done a lot of living rough, I know this bag well - and I also know proper packs.
    IMO, one should use this a bag as lye baseline by which “real” packs are judged. Will (say) an Alice pack work better? Probably - but how much better? How well does the other pack address the deficiencies of the duffel bag?

    Got back to school! Diameter is distance across circle of the filled bag. If you lay the bag flat, that in inches is half of the circuference. So edit your screen size of 49" diameter- would mean a bag that is 3x bigger, cmon. a 49" would be 4 foot wide tree trunk... Sure...Green Paint to cover any name and restencil new ID go to a sign shop they can cut pattern or print our large simple fonts and cut out through clear tape. spray from distance with bag masked.

    took this on a 3-day camp / hiking trip with only about 20 pounds, and the lack of support and padding chewed up my shoulders. looking to cut 2 slits towards the bottom to put an old belt through for support. hope it works because that was my dad's from the Army.

    I know Im about 7 years late to the party on this one, but the one of the dimensions you gave in the beginning of the video is incorrest. The diameter is in no way 49"...that would be a circular bag of more than 4 feet across. It may be a 49" circumference, but im bot certain.
