Low Body Fat But No Abs? (3 REASONS WHY!)
Lean but no abs? There are a few main reasons why this might be the case...
Reason #1: Your body fat percentage is not as low as you think.
Most people way over-estimate how lean they truly are. In my experience, if you take most people's estimated body fat percentage and add 3-5% extra to it, that's usually closer to what they actually are.
Many people complain about having a "low body fat percentage but no abs", when in reality they're well above the 15% body fat level needed in order to simply START seeing six pack abs poking through.
Just how lean to see abs clearly? For well defined six pack abs (when flexing) you'll likely need to be somewhere between 10-12% body fat, which is quite lean and not easy to accomplish for most.
In most cases, if you think you have low body fat but no abs, the simple truth is that you don't actually have "low body fat" to begin with.
Reason #2: Your body stores a higher percentage of fat on your stomach.
Everyone stores their fat a bit differently throughout their body (this is mostly determined by genetics), and this will affect just how low your body fat percentage needs to be in order to see your abs.
If your body preferentially stores a much higher amount of your adipose tissue as belly fat (such as in my own case) getting clearly defined six pack abs is going to be a longer road and a bigger challenge.
14% body fat but no abs? 12% body fat but no abs? Assuming you're truly at those body fat levels, it could just be that your individual fat distribution does not flavor having a very lean stomach.
You can certainly still get there with enough effort if you truly want to, but you're going to need to lower your overall body fat percentage lower than the average person.
Reason #3: Your abdominal muscles are not sufficiently developed.
If you truly have low body fat but no abs, part of the reason may just be that you need to perform a higher amount of direct ab exercises and ab workouts in order to really get them to show through.
Compound movements provide some stimulation, but it's not enough to maximize abdominal development and really carve out that clear separation you're after.
High rep "ab circuits" are not ideal - the abs should be treated just like any other muscle and trained through progressive resistance training in the same way. I recommend 10-15 reps per set going within a few reps of failure.
Some of my favorite ab exercises include kneeling rope crunches, hanging leg raises, reverse crunches and plank variations.
So, if you have low body fat but no abs, those are the 3 things to examine. If all 3 are taken care of then you'll be on the proper path toward your goals. Hope you found this helpful.

My 2c... Pricey Tanita scale and I've used that brand and others for many years. I noticed if my hydration level is very high, the body fat percentage can be displayed as quite low. Example... I can be as high as 16-18% when really low hydration and if very high hydration, I've scored about 10-11%. I know that I'm about 14% +/- on average and know that BF% does not change dramatically within hours/minutes/a day. After a while of body composition scales, you can see the pattern. Yes, I do check first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and bio visit.

I like the focus on “to see abs when flexing”, cause many people think that at a certain bf% you’re just gonna show abs at any circumstance, which you won’t, unless you’re very very lean prepping for a show or something like that, and even then your mid section won’t appear as you may think

I had a really bad case of ED about two years ago where I sat at about 118lbs as a 5'9 Male.
Now, after a mild though not full recovery I sit at 128lbs with a 27" waist. I store most of my BF around my lower stomach area and used to have a flat stomach until I started training my abs with basic weighted core exercises. I don't know my current bodyfat percentage and don't want to make estimates.
Sadly, although my abs are visible now under good conditions they aren't as crisp as I would like them to be. However, I refuse to starve myself ever again, and I'm not looking to bulk either because I feel fine as I am in terms of energy and don't want to get too muscular. If anything, I'm looking to re-comp.
Although I have a clear vision of what I'm trying to do I'd be glad to take some advice even if I don't end up implementing it. : )

Its interesting that food, which in turn affects hormones, are probably 90% responsible for mid section fat. As the saying goes, 'you can't out-train a bad diet'

Agreed on all points. If you store most body fat on your belly/midsection, look into your cortisol:dhea ratio and balance it if need be (supplement dhea or reduce stress). I went and got a dexa scan, my body fat was a lot lower than I thought but that’s because most of it is on the belly. The doc pointed out that if I focused on reducing (chronic) stress, that I would look a lot better.

    • @WolfStreak
      @WolfStreak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Sean_Nalewanyj

    • @christersmith5470
      @christersmith5470 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As men in society, we’re typically expected to carry more stress without complaint. And our dhea levels fall as we age. This means it’s even more important to find effective methods of stress management that work for us.
Women have stress too, especially in today’s world, but it’s socially acceptable for them to talk about it. It still seems almost taboo for men; in that regard, this makes taking care of our mental and emotional health even more essential.

I’ve got a six pack… but getting the definition good in my lower abdominal area is very tough. No idea what my fat %age is, other than whatever I think it is, it will almost certainly be higher. It is challenging maintaining this body weight. I am almost permanently careful with food. That’s just the trade-off I’m personally making at this time in my life to look in good shape

I've got a friend who suffered from body dismorphia, and even today he would like to have "my phisique", just because I have kind of visible abs. But he has way more strength, and his body is in more shape than mine. Hopefully sending him this video would calm him a ton more :)

I never really hit my abs because my stomach is always been flat and didn’t feel like working out mid section. Last month on DEXA, it came at 12.6%. I started doing just weighed decline sit ups everyday for almost 3 weeks now. I see 4 upper abs already. I need to work on my lower abs too now. 😄

Right on point. I can hardly grab the skin on my quads, my calfs have striations, I have veins on my shoulders and chest, but lower midsection ( Front and back actually) are really f...ing stubborn. As a rule of thumb the first place you put fat on is the last place where you lose it. I am currently trying to slowly lower that fat, without losing or the least possible MM. I actually recently received the free plan you offered, and it seems to make sense. Will let you know further on if it's working as expected.

Was down to 10% a couple of years ago and people would comment my face looks too thin but still no abs. legs and arms were shredded though.

    4. Nutrition. High sugar Nutrition will get more fat around your midsection.
    5. Time of day. Fat amd water move during the day. Measure yourself in the morning, and a few hours later. Even if you didn't eat anything, you may vary like me.
    6. Type of deficit. Personally, i store a lot on the lower back, and lower abs. How i do my deficit definitely changes where I loose weight the most. Doing water fasts, I loose a lot more around my waist. This is because this stubborn fat needs more time without food to tap into.
We are all different, some people may be fine with normal deficit and 6h fasting. I need to do more than 16h to really tap into this.

Oh so basically we are talking about being low body fat but still having a lot of fat in certain places because of genetics. I got that problem with my chest. I’m not low body fat not even close but have way too much fat in my chest and fupa area. Might have to do the surgery. Some reason my stomach also has less fat compared to above and below it. Can diet do this also. I assume eating too much sugar and carbs in general like me can’t help. But I figure it would go to the stomach region or torso. I’ve seen people who also have fat arms usually women hold fat around the tricep but some men do too, genetics is a biotch sometimes.

My previous goal was to have a six pack...I'd get close and just cheat on my diet every single time. (I like drinking beer)Now I believe my diet has improved to eating more volume of lower calorie dense foods but my desire to have a six pack is much lower. I actually gained 10-15 lbs during the lockdown from bad choices and have lost most of that weight since starting this diet. I honestly feel great and don't really care that my stomach has a very small spare tire. I'll continue to eat the same way and see how much more weight that I can't lose, but the pressure to obtain a fantasy goal isn't my plan. My plan is more to level off at around 160-165 lbs (currently 174) in a long term plan and be healthy.

I used to obese and so I store a lot of fat around my abdominals. At 10% body fat, my shoulders, arms and back get really lean but my abs are look like most people 12% while at 10% (as estimated by my past bodybuilding coach).
I think a fairly expensive but actually effective solution would by cryolipolysis or coolsculpting. How it works is it forces fat cell death (not fat cell shrinking which is through diet) at around 1-3 degrees Celcius, and your body would excrete the fat cells over the following months. It's pretty non invasive unlike lipo which requires you to go under the knife, and I feel is pretty legit for getting the results you want especially when you are at the supposedly beach lean percentages but still can't see your abs.
I have tried it and overall I think it's working, my abs have been getting more cut ever since. The only downside is treatment is expensive but all I can say that it works and there's scientific research supporting it as well.

I'm like 12% body fat, 6'3", weigh 217 lbs, have a 34 inch waist, 18 inch biceps, a 17 inch neck, and only my upper abs are barely visible when flexing. I workout my abs a lot, do lots of kickboxing, lift heavy, detox religiously, and still nothing. Endomorph is, hands down, the very worst body type.

Reason number 4 and one that’s probably the most prevalent, you’re eating a diet too high in sodium and not drinking enough water leading to bloating and water retention especially in the abdominal section and with water sitting between the muscle and skin it doesn’t allow your muscles to pop through to the surface.
