RLcraft requires you to have PhD in suffering to succeed
how to get wood: get flint, smash flint against rock, get stick, break leaves to get stick, craft an knife, with flint shard and stick, use knife to kill grass to get plant fiber, use plant fiber to make fiber string, use stick, fiber string, and flint, to make axe, use axe to kill trees.
alternative way: collect rocks on the ground, get 12 rocks, craft them into cobblestone, find stick, break leaves to get sticks, find crafting table on village or somewhere else, craft stone pickaxe, break stone to get more rocks, get more sticks, craft an stone axe, use axe to kill tress.

Honestly, I actually agree that half of the "most popular" modpacks... are genuinely terrible. SF4 is honestly probably the only one that's consistently in the most popular that I'd call a genuinely good modpack.
Like, RLCraft is legitimately just designed for content creators and that's it. It's overall just terribly designed to be unfun, and I'm saying this as someone that HAS 100%ed it.
BetterMC, while good for what it is, feels pointless - It's blatantly designed for multiplayer servers, as there's almost no real SP pack progression systems or mechanics, but at the same time, it's just exactly what is says on the tin: "It's Better Minecraft", not anything special. It always feels too limited in scope by trying to stick to the vanilla feel that it ends up feeling kind of pointless to actually play.
Prominence is good, genuinely, but has some serious progression issues with certain bosses having too much hp or weirdly buggy, and certain playstyles being way stronger than others.
Pixelmon/Cobblemon/etc. are... again, MP-centric, as their default state just sucks to play in SP.
ATM, again, feels too unfocused. I enjoy them, but there's often barely much difference from just playing your own custom modpack - There's often not enough feeling of synergy, tied together progression and rewards for doing things.
A lot of the content creator made packs are way too heavily skewed towards what that creator normally does in their videos, which causes them to feel too overly focused, but they also rarely have actual effort put into things like progression, tutorials, rewards, shop systems, skill points, etc. etc. that a lot of other packs have.
Stoneblock is decent, but really only the first release was anything "special", as it's now just "yet another skyblock type". And considering how many genuinely amazing skyblock packs are out there, it's up against a lot of 9/10 and 10/10 competition, yet ends up feeling like only a 8/10 experience.
Like, aside from SF4, which was absolutely stellar and I really hope we get another entry in the series at some point that expands on what made SF4 special, while including all the more recent tech mods like Create.... almost all of the modpacks I've genuinely enjoyed the most... are ones that almost no one has ever heard of, or that are for whatever reason not commonly seen as "popular" like DDSS, or are super hyper focused like Gregtech, or do actual expansive content like, again, DDSS and Sevtech and whatnot with ACTUAL progression and reward aspects - Like Eternal was great at this, as it's only big issues were entirely related to random bugs.
Like, when I compare RLCraft and DDSS.... I just genuinely don't understand how RLCraft is the more popular pack. Especially considering they're literally on the same version.
RLCraft: Makes progression legitimately a pain. Removes almost all basic minecraft functions. Spams random high-power enemies literally everywhere whenever you do literally anything. Forces you to grind to be able to use anything. Stupidly hard in all of the wrong ways.
DDSS: Makes progression longer but WAY more interesting by using custom extended crafting table recipes for 90% of stuff. Keeps the basic minecraft experience. Spams high-power enemies only at night, but gives you tools to deal with them over time. Makes items much harder to craft, but allows you to explore to skip progression tiers easily (Legit recommend just exploring to get iron gear, it'll take you like 1/10th of the time AND reward you with other random stuff you'll need either now or later.), Hard, but in most of the right ways, and you can remove most progression difficulty by either exploring or understanding every mod in the pack and actually utilizing optional stuff *cough*rustic bees x mystical agriculture*cough*.
Both packs are on the same version (1.12.2), both have similar scopes and design aspects (high-end progression but with exploration heavy mechanics), and honestly, both have kind of similar "base difficulty" due to DDSS having quite a number of design elements early on that are notably dangerous... but one of them is actually fun to play, while the other is RLCraft.

I’ve had a ton of fun with RLcraft. I like punishing games that you have to learn to navigate. However, I do think there are really stupid mechanics that muddle the experience for me. Like I tried to make a base that was built a little underground in a mountain and every single day a wraith or whatever it’s called would attack me and just harass anything around, floating through my walls. I set up shop in a village, but not long afterwards an event happened and almost everyone died, then I tried to make a villager farm, but another event happened and killed my last two villagers and I just had to be okay with not living near villages because the game is designed so that anything near you dies. I was so tempted to move because of the constant ghost harassment, but I had put so much into building my base. I tried lighting up and blocking out all the nearby holes, but nothing I did would stop it.
It definitely sucks in many ways, but I do love the slow grind of becoming something from pain and trial. I think I suck too much to accomplish that though, because I’ve yet to make it super far in a playthrough. When I fever a decent computer that allows me to play with more chunks loaded and without lag I think im gonna do another play-through and have a good time with it.
I’m gonna try DDSS, but I’m not optimistic. The main reason RLCraft is one of my favorite mod packs is that all of the other interesting and appealing mod packs are too large for my PC to handle.
I’m out of college and looking for a job at the moment and my first big purchase once I have an income is gonna be a nice PC, I think.

a few things... 1, the thing you wondered if it was hostile is called a "kung fu dewgong" and Luffy fought some in the show... and then they started calling themselves his students. 2, the thing you tested your powers on is not a sea king, it is a "fighting fish". and 3, you need flint to get wood in RLCraft.

RLCraft has always just been obtuse, rather than fun. It's viewbait. If you like RLCraft, but want it to be fun, play TerraFirmaCraft. If you like TFC but would rather it be even better, get a copy of Vintage Story.

the modpack would have been scarier if you had the shaders on. The shaders basically caries the modpack.

RLCraft youtuber clickbait garbage is just a terrible version of TerraFirmaCraft with a lot of bells and whistles of BS terrible game design, or Vintage Story game based on that TFC mod.
One Piece thing playing solo sucks, its far more better with friends and additional mods, which is how i got to play it.
THE FOG is just okay mod pack with specific theme, nothing phenomenal.
