- A playthrough of Double Fine Production's 2016 PC graphic adventure game, Day of the Tentacle Remastered.
This game is a remake of the classic PC 1993 LucasArts' graphic adventure, Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle. The remastered edition was released on March 22, 2016 for the PC, PS4, and Playstation Vita. This video of the PC version, though they are identical to one another (barring the lower resolution on the Vita version).
3:20:35 After the ending credits, I go through the Concept Art Gallery bonuses that were unlocked during the playthrough. There is some seriously cool art here, with tons of original sketches and paintings of the in-game assets - and possibly the coolest thing ever - a DotT drawing featuring the characters in a mock cover for Star Wars VI - Return of the Jedi. Bernard as Luke, Laverne as Leia, Hoagie as Han, and Purple Tentacle as Darth Vader?! YES!!!!
It's difficult to appreciate how well done this remake is unless you've recently played the original game for Dos, or if you regularly flip back and forth between the updated and original graphics while playing the remaster. If it looks like they didn't do much to it, it's only because it looks like how the game probably always looked in your memory, sans big pixels and dithering. Either way, it looks superb, and far better than what many people seem to think is a graphics filter merely plastered atop the original game's display. Spend five minutes playing them side-by-side and you'll see how truly absurd that claim is. The sound has also been remastered from the original recordings, and sounds WAY cleaner as a result.
The game is a classic, and this is an awesome improvement over the original. If anything, it's a sheer marvel that the game stands up just as well in 2016 as it did in 1993 - new graphics or not.

There were so many "Big Box" PC games made, in the 80's and 90's, that you can play a new one every week, for the rest of your life, and never run out.
There doesn't NEED to be "any more" of them, there's already enough for the entire world...
Note: Plus, this is "remaster" of the original 1994, Lucas Arts PC game. It was re-released in 2016, for the PS4.
There are many great 90's games re-released under the term "remastered," for newer systems, all the time. Just do you research under "re-released remastered classic videogames" and you'll find enough to fulfill the rest of your days 🙂😉

I had this sequel, DAY OF THE TENTACLE for my old PC as one of the budget priced White Label games on the Talkie CD-ROM back in the 1990's.
This is one of the best LucasArts Games, i have ever played 😺👍🕹️.
The game is just as amazing as it's always been - just now with some seriously improved graphics, better sound quality, and a much more streamlined interface. What more could you ask for?
+NintendoComplete I remember that we often had no sound at all in the DOS era. Sometimes it just worked under Windows95 (as in: Launch in the DOS box), sometimes under DOS. Sometimes we had sound effects (DAC), sometimes only MIDI music. So "better sound quality" is for me "reliable sound"^^
EDIT: Jesus, the nostalgia is hitting me hard. I get images back of my childhood seeing that screen at 5:00. It's weird how much capacity a human brain has; the flashbacks back in the CRT era and the loud fan noise of the computer..

classic i love this game. I played this when I was a kid . It was the first version when I was about 10, I never got to complete it as I lent the CD to my friend and never got it back. So Im going to enjoy watching your play through to see the end. So many memories coming back. The very frist games I completed on PC was Sam and Max "Hit the road" Monkey Island 1 and 2. Loved them games. I was also obsessed with Theme Park and Theme Hospital. Good times. Thank you for the play through.

Thanks for posting this. I came here to compare the classic graphics (my childhood) vs the remaster. I played Day of the Tentacle as a kid, and it was one of my favorite games. I played the remaster when it came out in 2016, but it didn't feel right. Today, I saw the remaster again on a huge sale (around 3 euros), but then I began comparing the two versions. Here's the thing... when comparing the classic graphics vs the remaster, I've finally figured out what's wrong with the remaster: The old art-style and sounds had a good balance. The remaster on the other hand, looks like some cheap Flash cartoon with awful art. The "remaster" also accentuates all of the bad aspects of this game. I honestly hate the non-stop "whimsy" music, the infantile jokes, the depressing atmosphere, the "moon logic" (illogical) puzzles and the bad voice acting. In the remaster they've made everything sound so "remastered" and "clear" that it just feels overwhelming and nauseating. With the classic version it all fits together in a cozy way, whereas the ugly remaster just looks like a bad Flash game.

I wonder what makes the dialog go out of sync with the text especially at 2:44:22 when comparing with your previous version (PC DOS) which is set at 2:34:00? Makes me preferred the DOS than the remaster.

Main characters in all these adventure games are such THIEVES. They just straight up lift stuff off people and steal their shit lying around - and the moral ambiguity of it is almost never addressed in the game. I guess when the world is at stake, anything goes.

I think it was Ron Gilbert who commented on this in one of the commentary tracks, that especially for kids games they moved in the direction of having fair excuses. Like, "Oh here's Bob's hammer, I'd better bring it back to him" etc.
This is just a game and on to be taken seriously.
It works with Guybrush Threepwood. Thievery is one of the main pirate skills, after all.

This game is probably fun, but it can't compare to its predecessor, 'Maniac Mansion', at least on the NES. Not only was the storyline entertaining and funny, but the music is some of the best in any video game.

Something didn't click with me with this remake. Double Fine did an excellent job, but redone in HD, the graphics feel strangely flat to me, especially with the characters: with unchanged animations - an unavoidable issue like with the two Monkey Island remakes, since the game is basically built on top of the original - they often look out of Flash animations. It's funny to think that the graphics don't feel like that in the original mode, thanks to the limitations of the lower resolution at the time. In any case, began it twice, and twice I stopped playing it.
It's for the same reason that I don't feel like playing Full Throttle Remastered right now, I'm afraid it will have the same effect on me.
I felt that too, however I kinda feel that this was really the best the developers could do while keeping the style of the original game.
