I'm not a United fan but Rio is my favorite defender of all time. He had everything. He was tall, strong, athletic and great with the ball. You could probably play him anywhere. He just became a defender because he was tall and could jump high.

Absolutely class the two of them. Vidic could get you a goal as well as could Ferdinand but vidic was better in an attacking sense. They had a sixth sense, Ferdinand knew when to drop and cover and vidic would press the player. Excellent players
They were perfect. There were a lot of great defensive pairings at the time, in and outside the premier League. But none worked so perfectly with each other than these two. As a united fan, watching them playing in the back really gave us a sense of safety. Also shout out to Edwin Van dar sar for being the most consistent footballer I've ever seen. Hardly ever saw him make a mistake or fumble, which is often harder than even flashy saves.

Vidic was a monster strikers hated going up against, winning almost every ball in the air, winning so many tackles, and was not afraid to put his body on the line to keep a clean sheet. Bisakka is definitely the best right back defensively we've had. Though my star pick there will always be Rafael. He bossed the right wing single handedly regardless of what right winger we had at the time, and defensively was pretty great too, I remember him getting the better of the likes of Ribery and Bale. Discipline was his main issue, very unnecessary fouls.
Probably the best pairing I've seen with the possible exception of the unfortunately brief partnership of healthy Nesta and young Thiago Silva at Milan. Nesta was as close to a perfect defender as there has ever been and Thiago Silva might be the best CB of the 2010's and they were special but I don't think they had enough time together to reach that telepathic understanding Rio and Vidic had.

Probably the best pairing I've seen with the possible exception of the unfortunately brief partnership of healthy Nesta and young Thiago Silva at Milan. Nesta was as close to a perfect defender as there has ever been and Thiago Silva might be the best CB of the 2010's and they were special but I don't think they had enough time together to reach that telepathic understanding Rio and Vidic had.
