- Many of us only know about ocarinas because they were featured in Japanese media that made it to the west - My Neighbor Totoro, Zelda, and more.
... but why did Ocarinas get popular in Japan?
It's thanks to an amazing musician named Sojiro - his website below:

He used the ocarina in an NHK documentary soundtrack (The Great Yellow River). NHK documentaries are featured across the entire nation. From this point, a nation fell in love with the instrument, and the rest is history
Listen to that exact soundtrack below on Spotify:

I have the Japan-exclusive HDR CX680, but the only difference from the CX675 is extra internal storage
It's ironic how Americans often doesn't know of the ocarina or only know it through Zelda considering the English learned it from the Aztecs and popularized it in Europe. While the ocarina we know now is mostly Mesoamerica × Europe style, Japan did have their own vessel flutes, which is possibly why they fairly quickly took a liking to the instrument when they were exposed to it....which also explains why there's a surprisingly big ocarina following in Korea too since they have their own vessel flute....damn ITS ALL COMING TOGETHER
I visited Japan in early 80’s. They are artistic people who seek peace, beauty, tranquility, & harmony. That’s why they like this instrument. ⛩🎎🎏
I never realized that the potty flute Totoro was playing was an ocarina. I just assumed it was a japanesd version of the xun....which is actually a type of vessel flute which is what ocarina is lmao
I first learned of the concept around 2007~2008 at a fieldtrip, we actually visited a planetarium which partnered with professional ocarina makers and players. We got to decorate basic 4 hole ceramic ocarinas with markers and got to see live performances. I recall liking how Houki Boshi (Bleach ending, it was really popular in both Japan and Korea) sounded when played with an ocarina.
That being said, I believe the first time I saw an ocarina was when I watched Pokemon Birth of Lugia/Pokemon The Movie 2000 Power of One when Melody plays Lugia's song. Speaking of which, this movie was released in 2000 in the US but it was released in 1999 in Japan so definitely fits the trend of the 80s~90s thing too.
Your japanese is spot on 😂👍
Such a fun video!
Hey Andy , Wow you studio recorded in Korea , this makes you an international recording star of ocarina tunes , , ,😮
And bam, outta nowhere with the Japanese recording sesh
I refuse to believe that the Sweet Potato Tooters was an actual band even if there's evidence to prove it 💀
Pretty cool discussion! Thanks Andy :)
"And 3, they're not subscribed yet" 30 seconds in and I already like this video even more
I’m in my mid sixties and played flute in high school. I first heard of ocarinas by pouring over a music instrument catalogue in the 90s. I read that they were in GI gift packages sometimes during WWII. I hope I have that right. I eventually took up penny whistle and recorders. Only recently heard Zelda music. And I have purchased a couple of plastic ocarinas. More info please!!!
Using my friend phone. No, my dad brought me a ocarina from High Spirit Flutes.Carrie Kritcher
Thanks to Diego Modena I heard about ocarina 🙏✌
If not for Zelda, I would not know and would have nothing to do with ocarinas. I was surprised to see some people who play the ocarina really well and very quickly, this instrument is fun to have and use and am glad that I decided to buy one, I almost didn't.
My first ocarina was the best impulse purchase of my life :)
Glad you got one!
Very interesting. Good japanese as well 👍
I love Moble. Kiss Kiss. >^••^< 🐾
