Pretty much, yeah. Caution is always advisable, sure, (any animal, humans included, may carry diseases after all, and bites in particular and oral contact with wounds in general are great at transmitting infectious nastiness,) but I don't see what so many people have against vampire bats.

Well, rabies spreads through the saliva of infected animals and is generally transmitted through the bites of infected animals, so, yeah, all bats _can_ have rabies (and other diseases as well; the mouth is not exactly the most hygenic place of the body). It's just that vampire bats, being generally more likely to actively attempt to bite you, are more likely to infect you than bats with a more bug-based diet.

They are genuinely beyond adorable!
Notice how their heads, unlike the heads of other bats, are almost devoid of fur. I cannot help thinking of the parallel situation in vultures, which are always shoving their faces into carcasses and therefore have bald heads.

Maybe drinking blood is not exactly their most appealing feature, but wow aren't they cute! It's really sad that them, and bats in general, have that many bad superstitions around them.
I wonder if livestock could be vaccinated against rabbies carried by vampire bats. That way, there would be no problem for ranchers, as the blood bats take is minimal compared with the total blood of the cow.
Only 0.5% of vampire bats carry rabies, and the ones who do usually can't fly straight to begin with.

There’s no cure for rabies, because it’s a virus and viruses can only be treated … not cured, you can build a natural immunity to some of them by repeated exposure but get rabies and your screwed, if caught to late you’ll die a horrible death …

Pretty sure that only 1% of all bats ever have ever been found carrying rabies, and vamps hardly EVER do. The only way they would contract it would be to bite an animal that already carried it which is extremely unlikely. Not a fan of how the video portrayed them as scary evil creatures, they're honestly quite intelligent and social, vamps are known to adopt orphan bat pups and risk their own lives to feed sick or elderly bats that cant safely leave their roosts, and can live for nearly 15 years, sometimes more. As far as biting goes they usually cant consume more than a tablespoon of blood in one sitting, theyre the size of your thumb so they don't nessisarily cause as much damage as this video would have you believe; they rarely if ever bite humans. Considering other threats to livestock, vamps are a miniscule problem, a cow is more likely to catch rabies from a coyote or fox than a bat, lets be honest. It was still a decent video though. I'm terribly sorry for the rant, ignore my prattle. :)

My question is why do you say that bats which drink blood are LESS likely to carry rabies then those who don't? A vampire bat has a much higher chance then a fruit bat to get rabies as rabies can be transferred via blood as well as saliva. Not that many vampire bats have rabies just that I would bet more of them have rabies then those who don't drink blood.
Completely agree, how they picture vampire bats is too dramatic, and a vampire with rabies couldn't be able to feed himself, and they usually go outside in the middle of the day which it's not normal at all. Glad to see your comment~

Wake up to one on your dogs back screeching when it realizes its been found out and then rushing your dog 110 miles to the nearest vet to find out 72 hours later he has rabies and has to be put down. They are scary. Everything about them they way they eat sleep move you name it. I dont support any eradication of the animal. They have every right to exist but charming and cute they are not
How about educating people about them Instead of dramatising and sending a bad message about bats. They have a hard enough time as it is with all the haters.

Many years ago I was a young private in the Army. We where in Panama doing jungle training. At dust you could see the vampires bats flying overhead. Be for you went to sleep you had to make sure you had a head net on and gloves make sure your BDU sleeve where rolled down. So you don’t become a unwilling blood donor.

This is unfair against vampire bats. They are lovely animals. It isn’t their fault they can carry rabies. They are one of the most humane predators; they don’t even intentionally kill their prey and the bite is almost painless! The cattle often don’t mind the vampire bats feeding from them!
