  • Minecraft Content is Repetitive... So instead of ignoring that fact, let's figure out why we don't click on Minecraft videos anymore...

    Stale is one way to describe Minecraft content at the moment. No one does anything different for various reasons, so watching minecraft videos often feels like a waste of time. In this video, I go over why I think Minecraft Content Isn't Fun Anymore, and try to figure out if anything can be done to stop Minecraft from being boring.
    Hope you enjoy!

      I’m all for new ideas however when someone tries to do something different especially in the Minecraft community it usually goes south for example your boat video was one of the most unique Minecraft videos I have watched in a while and its a shame it didn’t do well but part of that is because its not your typical Minecraft video its a unique concept and some people just aren’t interested in seeing something that they are unaware of what holds in the video.

    • @MixToons
      @MixToons  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +45

      @@TopRanker2 I think in the case of the boat video, it didn't do too well because of the audience
      My viewers are still predominantly originally from hypixel-more specifically editors-so a boat video like that is very out there... If I'd started with more general MC, then a boat video like that would prob perfom better
      But then again, there could be a bunch of reasons for the boat video not doing well... Either way, the ideas that people come up with dont even have to be super radical... Wifies made a video titled "Can I Trap Myself", which is a play on the whole trapping trend... Just by doing that, he made a video that was very different from the "This Trap Force Quits Your Game", but still recognisable enough to be interesting to watch
      Point is, I think it's doable :)

      Its scary for youtubers to try something brand new when it is so likely to not get any views. For me, a small youtuber though, I have had an original idea for a long time that I think would be super cool and turn into a very interesting series, but I don't have the time to record all the footage and learn the editing skills to make it happen. I just posted my first video in 2 years onto my own channel and it is a pretty generic bedwars montage instead of that cool ambitious video I had wanted to post.

    minecraft content feels like how school does. students no longer learn for the sake of learning, they learn for the grade. creators now don’t create content for the sake of being creative, they create for the numbers… and sacrifice their soul and personality along the way. it’s heartbreaking.

  • @AustMC
    @AustMC 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +403

    This video was very well made. Just sharing my thoughts, I started my hardcore minecraft channel about a year ago, and I think the main reason everything has become so similar is because our income relies so heavily on engineering virality. Without a team, the videos can take upwards of a month to create, and for upcoming creators like myself, it's hard to justify spending 200+ hours on a video that might flop. So naturally, everyone gravitates toward the ideas and formats that have proven to work, and very few of us are able to stand out.

    • @AustMC
      @AustMC 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

      And while there’s still a huge audience that enjoys the type of content we make, it’s hard to tell if we’re actually building a real following, or just creating things to appease the masses. Long term, this relentless chase for higher numbers and viral videos is a recipe for burnout, and I suspect that’s why you see some of the larger creators in the space (who don’t have a team behind them) disappear for several months at a time.

    • @caztra11
      @caztra11 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I mean, I think you're taking it a bit too seriously. I understand that its about the money and - when it comes to getting money "generating virality" is far more important than being creative however time and time again its been proven that channels that are purely making content for the money just don't succeed in the long term. An example would be old GTA clickbaiters like Lispy Jimmy - the moment your game leaves the zeitgeist so do your views and revenue. So bringing it back to what I said at the start, taking TH-cam so seriously and putting yourself under what I can only imagine is fairly intense monetary and mental pressure for the sake of money and views, is not a formula for longevity when it comes to your success (And is instead the perfect formula to get a sunnyv2 video made about you lmao). But who knows maybe Im stupid and wrong :)
      Edit - Thinking about it a little more what I talked about is actually more of a like... Systematic problem with TH-cam itself. It seems impossible to actually get your videos in the recommended of others without either being EXTREMELY unique, already have a large following, or trend chasing. So idek know anymore ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    This is exactly why I love watching the Hermitcraft SMP so much. The interactions between the hermits always seem to feel fresh and non repetitive. I especially love watching Mumbo Jumbo, because he's not afraid to make mistakes and leave them in the video. It makes him feel especially genuine and humble compared to other creators who edit every mistake out of their videos and polish them to perfection. He's also not afraid to do things like blow up his own base to get a fresh start. It's genuinely so refreshing to watch him.

    • @TwilightChomperEnthusiast
      @TwilightChomperEnthusiast 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +136

      The nice part about it is their personality online. Give this concept to ANYONE else, and they would start screaming into their mic something like: “Minecraft, but if you DIE three times, you get BANNED FOREVER!!!!!!” And because the Hermits aren’t super focused on PvP, the conflicts we get are more interesting and creative, for we want to see how they handle the situation. Taking a look at the LifeSteal SMP (no shade to those guys), every single confrontation can be predicted with golden apples, splash potions, totems, etc. and the times they DO use a trap, it’s been gassed up the entire video making it underwhelming in practice.
      TL;DR The Hermits’ personality, creativity, and general lack of extreme PvP skills make for a more entertaining series.

      ikr doesn't this just feel a lot like... life, almost? At the very least the whole internet right? It feels like starting in around 2017 everybody started really diving into things like smartphones and youtube, then 2018 had the fortnite craze, now everyone's a gamer whether thats on phone, console, or pc. I feel like there's this deep problem with the world that nobody seems to be able to acknowledge. Nothing has been super hype in the last few years- there's been news that everyone's payed attention to, yet somehow no hype behind it you know? Everyone talked about covid, most of America seems to know about Barbie/Oppenheimer yet there's this surrealness to the situation.
      I would highly recommend to people to at least take a few days off from the internet (and not for the sake of dopamine detox, that's mostly bs from all the research I've done)- other people, like me, might feel insane trying to stay completely off the internet, but there are benefits to viewing life without internet for a period of time.
      And there's all these videos about people feeling lost and purposeless, one video I saw even suggested we need to learn to live without real social connection, which I think is insane but I understand why they'd say that. I think all the confusion illustrates the craziness of society.

And sometimes those things cross over, but I feel like the second option makes everyone much more creatively fulfilled and happy.

    I think a part of the problem also lies in videos not being satisfying as time goes on. Staleness and sameness often lead to less satisfying videos by nature, but like a good song or meal, if a viewer is satisfied by the end, they can keep watching forever.
    Also, not to sound repetitive, but this is a great video. :p

    The issue is that most of us (especially the large ones) run a business, not just a TH-cam channel. I employ over 30 part-time/full-time contractors (editors, thumbnails etc). If I make too many unique videos that flop, I have to fire most of them. The pressure to keep the profits up means that we don't stray too far from what worked for us in the past.

    You've pretty much hit the nail on the head, While i havn't made a channel based on Minecraft, I have had one on roblox and This problem is pretty much everywhere on this platform, Someone does something that works, and everyone copies, and the Creators that dont copy get left behind most of the time, Its honestly sad because it just sucks the life out of every idea that would have been a staple in that pioneers career, and it just makes those few willing to be unique not want to try anymore.
    I felt it When you mentioned the fact that people were known for one thing back then and everyone was kinda known for doing their own thing ( Dantdm with his Mod Stories/Stampy with his lovely world/BajanCanadian for his Hunger games) , But now the platforms filled with clones of eachother, It genuinely annoys me when i see a video thats clearly just made to get views and please the algorithm, I Catch myself not wanting to make or spend time on videos that I want to make because its not "optimised" or doesnt have that copy paste editing style every youtuber uses, Its rlly demotivating tbh
    A bit of a ramble but, This is a really good video, Really points out the problems on youtube as a whole, hopefully things will change, hopefully.

    I enjoy what I do but sometimes I do get that unique idea and just put it to one side and say I’ll work on it later but in reality I know I’m not really going to out of the fear that it just won’t perform and my audience will loose interest.

    The way I see it, its not the creators causing the content to be repetitive, its youtube and the algorithm. I know creators that have ideas but when they execute that idea, youtube wont push it out. Without incentive from youtube to try new things, content cant move forward. I upload a manhunt, I get 100k, I upload anything else, 20k. Its unrewarding to try new things due to the algorithm. Especially when you do this full time. There are bills to pay, and when you upload something different and it doesnt preform, it hurts. I think youtube needs to put the YOU back in youtube. Otherwise its not about YOU, its about the algorithm

    • @MixToons
      @MixToons  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely agree to an extent... If you're a full time TH-cam then I definitely agree that being risky can be detrimental, so from an income standpoint, it's better to do what works
      However, I also do believe it's possible to understand the algorithm to a degree that you know which video ideas will do well, even if they're not what you usually make... The thing is as much as the algorithm is _an algorithm_, the main thing is that you're appealing to an audience you created, so it's possible to figure out what'll work imo
      That being said, I don't recommend that for full time TH-camrs, and I completely understand what you're saying here... Thank you for giving your full thoughts!

Only a few SMPs along with those 100 people or days videos stand out and trying to not find those oversaturated RP videos were difficult. Eventually, I dug deeper and finally found a video that had those old-school RP video vibes that I missed seeing and were either 1-2 or even 3-5 hours long that were not overly edited. Everybody’s trying to game the algorithm and use as many tricks as they can to optimize their videos. Speaking from personal experience I’ve found that trying to make the perfect video makes content creation much more rigid and difficult to express ideas in a unique way, leading to the repetitiveness you talked about. I've been saying this for years, but I recon there are so many ways to transform Minecraft content to be something unique. Remember the days of the Dream SMP? Everyone thought SMPs were dead. I made my own SMP around this time and got harrased (the internet is dumb) over it. A month after I gave up, SMP's raged on for another 2 years. Ya'll need to be TRANSFORMATIVE. And remember, if its actually entertaining, the algorithm WILL push it

    This video is amazing, it bring to my eyes something that I was already starting to notice. It honestly scares me, since the current meta of content seems to be playing the algorithm near perfectly, how can someone with little following grow without making that kind of content? Or if they do, how can they stand out? These questions, which influence my future TH-cam career, honestly keep me up at night

    Amazing video, loved the way you went over your points, the pacing, the editing, and really everything! I truly believe getting out of your comfort zone making videos is something that needs to and will happen soon enough. I just think people forget that there is actually chance it won't work, and when people find out the hard way they quit before they can give it a second shot. I spent nearly 6 months on a video for it to not preform very well at all but the fact I actually loved what I made makes me really not mind as much I used to. Awesome to see something fresh doing well, especially in the MC space haha

    Although I agree with this to an extent. I believe that there are so many people on this platform innovating and making really unique creative videos. It’s important to make this kind of videos to address the issue but I think I have only seen one video on the other side talking about the things people do that are good. I love Minecraft content and even though I don’t watch it as much anymore there are so many creators that I just have to watch all of their videos due to their unique styles and awesomeness. You used certain channels visually to get the point across of copying and lack of innovation, which of course happens but plenty of those channels listed have done so so so much for the platform and MOST DEFINITELY formed community’s with people who watch every single one of their videos. Not everyone on the platform is going leave the impact that they want to. Some people are here to express their creativity, some are here for a job, and others are here to change the world. But it’s not fair to hate on someone for whatever they want to do, overtime as being a creator has become more of full time thing l went from the perspective of thinking copying is bad and everyone should be original to a better understanding that things are the way they are for a reason and everyone deserves a place here. BUT! And big BIG BUT yess the message at end is very true. Edit and create how you want not how you think TH-cam wants it. You will find your place on this platform over time and find an audience to appeal to.

    What made the Yogscast HUGE back in the day of old minecraft TH-cam was they did things like no one else. Series like Shadow of Israphel, turning a seemingly generic minecraft survival let’s play into a full story with its own living breathing world and lore, their tekkit and moon quest series where instead of just playing modded minecraft and experimenting with mods each series had a theme and an ultimate goal Lewis, Simon and Duncan would work on, that and their dynamic was perfect. Lewis generally being the leader, guiding everyone, Duncan being the one that gets things done and Simon providing comedic relief created such unique and hilarious moment blurring the lines between the seriousness of the completing the objective and just a series about 3 best friends playing a video game, having fun. It was also just pure raw gameplay a lot of the time, maybe that doesn’t work so much these days but I enjoyed the Yogs relaxed form of editing, a few perspective changes now and then and occasional animations when needed. They knew they thrived on their banter and chaos, the amount of times they’d all get frustrated when something didn’t go right or a mod wouldn’t work was hilarious and they didn’t care about creating a particular image of themselves or hyper stimulating viewers brains through editing, they showed just about every bit of gameplay they had and it was never boring because their commentary and dynamic always kept the mundane aspects of minecraft entertaining.

    Great analysis and video in general! The discussion was very much needed.
    'Make yourself unique by trying what you THINK will work, not what you KNOW will work' is such a good line, and creators really need to be taking this advice. I'm tired seeing all the same videos in different channels over and over.
    In a way, I miss old MCYT, too.

    Really well made video! I’m actually working on a Minecraft series right now that isn’t very milked on TH-cam. I have faith that one day, Minecraft and Minecraft videos can be restored to their former glory like in 2019-2020 and won’t be the same repetitive videos we see on TH-cam in 2023. My series is actually going very well right now and I actually just hit 25,000 subscribers! I hope that this year I can hit 100,000.

    This video wasn’t just a commentary, or documentary, sure it used some of the ideas found in both genres but what I personally consider this to be a unique and outstanding video is the fact that utilizing the factors which would normally hook you in, it told you story. That story being a lack of uniqueness. A novel, a newspaper, a poem turned into a cinematic masterpiece just to tell you that Minecraft on TH-cam is a industry, but that anyone who does participate in it, can escape the “brick walls reinforced with steel” that is this corner of TH-cam. Sure videos covering the same topic and using a similar style exist but this one used all the resources it could’ve to the point where it uses its resources like your favorite movie. Idk it’s just my personal opinion but definitely one of my favorite watches of the year!
