Race at 40,000 feet

- On my way from Manchester to JFK I just happened to open my window and notice that we were flying parallel to another plane. We were going faster and ended up overtaking it. Here's a short video I shot. Full zoom is at 210mm, so the other plane as probably a few miles away.
The contrail gives some perspective on just how fast passenger planes really fly, way faster than most people realize.
Yes, around 500mph typically.
@@DavidRRobinson Around 600mph or more for larger planes! I have people tell me all the time that passengers planes typically fly at 200mph if that! LOL.
@@ChrisZoomER they don't fly anywhere near 200 mph. a passenger plane cruising at top altitude is flying no more than 30 or 40 mph
@@neiljohnson7914 You're kidding right? Or maybe you're getting speed confused with altitude as jetliners usually fly between 30K and 40K feet up.

That’s cool! That other plane is a French airline called La Compagnie. They offer business-class only flights between France & North America.

approximately how many km/hour?
The cruising speed for a 767 (which is what I believe I was one) is around 529 mph or approx 851 km/h.

@@JW-th4nn no luck. I did have a still, but it's not any clearer than the videos. It's either a C with an o inside or an O with an o inside.
I think it's from virgin atlantic by the looks of it, i could definitely be wrong.

the required minimum horizontal separation between aircraft flying at the same altitude is 1000feet..rvsm..not for this..
I had to zoom way in to 210mm for that view, so we were quite a ways apart to begin with. The other plane could have easily been 1000 feet above or below us, it's hard to tell from that distance.

Way underestimated. The plane I was on and the plan I was filming were both at cruising speed -- over 800 km per hour.

@@neiljohnson7914 most planes will stall and not be able to maintain flight at only 40 km/hr.
Both planes are on a nearly parallel path going approximately the same speed, so they are going to appear in the air as if they are moving slowly.
It's no different than driving down the freeway in a parallel lane with another car. If you remove the background of all of the objects going by quickly you will appear to both be going slowly.
