what kills me about mario the music box is how fucking good the art is for no reason. It's genuinely some of the most on-model mario art I've seen online and it's a game that takes itself way too seriously. It's not even badly written, it's just... Mario is in there.
The Music Box was so weird to me because you have this very serious and melodramatic horror game but here's Mario and Luigi alongside these anime characters. It'd be like if they just all of a sudden were in Silent Hill, I just can't take it seriously

Mario's Music Box has made me come to the realization that a lot of RPG Maker horror games are really just "do the right thing or else you're fuckin' dead!" Ao Oni is pretty similar to it, just being much lesser in quality of course.
That's because it's a very easy way to write horror, because it's all very controlled in favor of the developer. It comes from the text adventure style and choose your Aventure games too, were some expected you to memorize the better routes and punished you anytime you slipped out. It's a very effective system to get the player on rails with the simplest game mechanics, and it clearly works dearly for a certain type of game. The thing is this type of game planning does get old fast for outsiders, and it's not a very hollistically interesting style of videogame. Some people do like the simplicity and charming RPGMaker look though.
