The HP Color Lasers print with much higher quality than the brother printers. I have owned basically all of them. Ink-jets.... really expensive to operate, heads clog and need to be cleaned... wasting ink... I would avoid them like the plague. If you don't print often they stop working because they dry up completely.

    Hello!
Since my (inkjet) printer broke, I considered purchasing this lovely laser printer you recommended. But I realise it’s a monochrome printer. While I don’t think I’ll print many coloured pages, would you recommend:
    A) I buy a multicolour laser printer
    B) Buy this mono laser printer but print coloured pages at like a library printer
    C) Buy this mono laser printer AND a cheap inkjet
    D) Any other option
    Thanks :)!

hi! I personally have my inkjet just for those coloured pages and my laser for the bulk of my typesets so I would definitely recommend that, unless you see yourself using a-lot of colour then I would recommend getting a laser printer with colour toner. But if not then I would recommend having a cheap inkjet for your odd colour pages and then a laser for the bulk of what you do 🥰

What type of paper did you use?...i would like to print my own books and would like to know the best paper for printing your own book

Hi! So the paper I use is going out of business unfortunately so it won't be of any use telling you 😪 but I like using a tinted paper that is not too white and of a creme-y hue (easier on the eyes) and I use A4 paper because in Australia that is the most common but it also let's me have a wider page when it's all folded which I like. I prefer paper of 100GSM (paper thickness) I hope this helps 🙏

@@beautifullybound in Canada we work with A4 aswell so it good 👍. I am sorry for you with your paper supplier. Do you have a specific brand or type of paper I could use? I really like the colour of your books hence me asking...or you could direct me?
      Thank you

@@soniama5246 I've used the same brand for years (reflex Australia - sand tint) but as I said before its gone out of business recently so I will have to find a similar one. But you can have a look at that paper to see if you can find a similar one

Hello there - I was wondering if any of you have experience how well home-printed mono Laser Printer printed onto good quality paper holds up over time.
I am in the situation where I have a few late 80s mass market paperbacks that are falling apart and yellowing due to acid burn. There are no affordable hardback versions available and the only other paperbacks available to buy second hand are probably in similar condition. I am considering breaking a copy down to loose pages, scanning it and using OCR to get it into a document. I could then print the document in booklet layout onto proper acid-free paper and bind it myself into a nice hardback.
The issue is that I don't know how long laser print lasts on the page as I have memories of facing pages sticking together and transferring to each other. This may have been from an old office photocopier on cheap paper but it has me concerned. The printer would be a Brother mono Laser Printer.
    Thoughts please?

      Hi!
I would definitely recommend using PH neutral archival glue when you re glue your pages as it stops yellowing and other issues that come with age in books. There is also paper that you can buy that is archival and acid free which will defiantly reduce the yellowing over time and prevents aging. The glue I use is from Traditional BookBinding Supplies located in Australia traditionalbookbinding.com.au/products/bookbinding-pva-adhesive-ph-neutral-professional-standard?_pos=4&_sid=2ddacb6b9&_ss=r The glue is the quality of what museum archivists use and is amazing, I can't recommend it enough.
If you use just this glue and normal copy paper I do not see any issues that this could cause other then sun damage which is common when you leave books using poor quality paper in the direct sun. So I would just advise you don't leave it in the sun for long periods of time and keep it on your bookshelf. But if your book is going to in a sunny room then I would buy acid free paper, traditionalbookbinding.com.au/products/mohawk-aicd-free-paper-warm-white-perfect-for-making-books-118-gsm?variant=41753740116138 it can range in price and can sometimes be quite expensive but it is definitely worth it if you want your books to last decades.

@@beautifullyboundThankyou for the suggestions. I did not think that I needed to check glues for acid-free status as well as the paper.
When I asked about durability I was actually wondering about the durability of the laser print itself. My memories from when I was in an office was of opening a stack of print that had been done a year or two previously and feeling a dry crickle sensation as the toner fragmented and stuck slightly to the back of the opposite page. This was a good thirty years ago and would have been from a cheap office photocopier on budget paper so may not be relevant with current printers. I don't know if modern commercial hardbacks are printed using laser printers or some form of ink but the type is very durable.
The paper suggestion is nice to have as it shows me what to aim for. Sadly it is a little too thick for my 10 year old Brother printer under Duplex use as that only goes up to 105gsm (even new Brother printers often have restrictions on the duplex paper path). I would probably aim for 90-100gsm since the book is only for our own use.

The very fact that you even consider a laser as a book printing mechanism shows that you are not a serious binder.
The question sometimes comes to dye vs pigment.
In fact the more I listen to your reasoning the more mistakes I hear.
Good luck, but I hope no one listens to your advice.
