I worked in a pet shop in the 1970s in Perth ,we had all under gravel filters and even my fish at home did. I don't know why we stopped using them, really. I think we all get blinded by new technology, just like we do with motor vehicles. I love your video at least I could understand what you were saying❤
Old school, this is what we used to use to grow good plants in our tanks, once the waste gets sucked under the gravel it's good for plant roots, we used to make them out of plastic corrugated roofing to and just cut slots in it, but these days there is so much good stuff you can use instead that is cheap.
I used to use store-bought under-gravel filters about a million years ago. We used to call them sub-sand filters then. And I never really thought too much of them. But after watching this and reading the comments, I'm thinking I just didn't really understand the mechanics of them or the benefits. They just might be worth another look. Thanks, Mate! ~Ron
I have used lighting egg crate with nylon screen. It must be nylon as any metal screens will corrode. Doubled piece of screen on the bottom, marbles spaced around (which is why you need the screen on the bottom), the egg crate, then another piece of screen.
Question: Would Undergravel work for a Turtle? I've been using canisters ever since I started in the fish keeping hobby and I'm planning on branching out and getting a baby Snapping Turtle. Tank is 60 Gallon Breeder 48x18x16. Lee's Premium 70/90 would fit this tank perfectly. I was talking to an older gentleman who swears by these filters and it would really cut the cost down on my new setup (was planning on purchasing a Fluval FX4) but I'm not sure it could handle the bio load of a larger reptile. Plan is to grow the turtle out to about 6" in this tank before going to a larger setup.
New school: Semi-undergravel filters? Basically a UGF in a portable tray, pot, or fabric pot that can be removed from the tank or pond without having to disassemble the whole entire tank. :)
@@arghdubliner4440 great question! I actually just undid that tank a few days ago and it had very little to no fish poo or molm underneath for the amount of time setup so I don’t imagine it would need to be cleaned very often. I would say it would last the longevity of the scape which for me is around 1 year or so. But again it’s all down to how you want to do it. For me it worked great barely ever did water changes and water stayed crystal clear.
Why didn’t you put anything under the seedling trays? Could a guy put filter floss or something under the trays? Your just using the gravel as a filter in this style correct? I guess I am just asking if you can put stuff under the trays to help filter the water even better?!
This is the type of creative content that I look for and I have never seen , a great idea I definitely needed . Since I'm always a big believer in trusting your feelings , so the other day I just had to see if I was right. Sure thing , my 1st colony of Neo's has been incredibly busy , and the best thing I could have done was giving them the 40 gallons , which was really all I had available. I had a bunch of store credit from Cory cats 🪣 I've been learning about shrimp and watching MST & Nick's visit to Glenn's place probably is what it took , soon as I got a new aquarium I was gonna get started . But the HOB both had cherries inside and I don't know how they did , so what I was thinking is to run my 107🤔 through the uplift tube and then the cannister would take over replace the air stone 🔥 , I just need to figure out how much substrate would be the best if you know what I am trying to do🦉 chances of anything getting through the layers of gravel and a layer of crushed lava rocks will be....? What do you think Harlan , a couple of spongee filters and the aquarium has more plants than most fish shops , I seriously set up a mega breeding and I have to start posting video so I can look back on what is the most interesting creature🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐🦐 I have ever just sat and watched, it's the best reason to have a good pair of binoculars and then you can get a great idea for everything you can see 😮 Especially my other Aquariums that aren't just packed with plants ☘️
Big tanks will need more than one exhaust (another one at the other back corner if you need two, and yet another one in the middle at the back if you need three). Obviously, each exhaust will need their own airtubing + air stone. You won't need three separate air pumps. You can add one powerful pump with built in multiple tubing ports, or just get a tube splitter.

Huge UGF fan. Thanks for making this video 😀

Thanks excellent ❤❤❤
Very informative!! this is perfect just what I was looking for. Thank you!
You need to keep the air lift tube at the substrate level.
Great Job. What will you be using the tank for?
Thanks! Not sure yet, most likely breed video.
Great video, and i have everything in the shed.

Definitely
Next time leave it wide and put bio media balls under

Cheers! Yeah man that’s fantastic! I gotta say sponge filters are always a go to for me. :)
Yeah I mentioned that I have 2 but I still think it's better to have a canister in order to grow the colony ?
@@stoneysscapes7544 it more personal preference I still think spongies will work fine
will this work on a big tank tho?
