I've loved Buddy Holly since I first heard his music. I was born just a handful of months after he was killed in a plane crash in 1959. His song is a tribute to the John Wayne film "The Searchers", which is the best Western movie ever filmed. Thanks for this video of his performance.

Hard to believe that tis was the beginning of the entire movement we know as Rock & Roll. Including Buddy, Elvis Bill Haley, Richie & the Bopper just to name a few. To think that this was all brand new for it's time !! Amazing that Buddy was primarily helping to start the whole movement. This song is timeless as it still works at my live gigs on land and on Cruise ships. (Pre Covid). My Students love to learn this song and if you need it transposed into a different key to make it easier to sing, I can help you with that as well. Love the classics. ;-)

Great song by Buddy Holly and the Crickets. In June 1956, Holly, Allison and Sonny Curtis went to see the movie The Searchers, starring John Wayne, in which Wayne repeatedly used the phrase "that'll be the day". This line of dialogue inspired the young musicians.

    An interesting fact:
look almost just like him. I’m from Texas, have a bit of a similar voice, and play guitar and some other instruments. I remember singing a while ago and my parents and everybody said I reminded them of Buddy Holly. Then my parents looked at my family tree. There he was. On my family tree. I’m also same religion as him. I’m a baptist he was too. And I realized that my father looked like buddy too. I am happy to be related to him. I impersonate him
    Some information about Buddy Holly:
Buddy Holly was only 22 when he died and sang since he was around 13. He was in a country and western duo with bob Montgomery for a while then he joined the crickets in late 1957. They had good songs together, such as, Oh Boy!, Peggy Sue, That’ll be the day, Everyday, and words of love. He was no doubt great at a lot. I don’t like him because he’s my relative, I like him because he has talent. I was a fan of him before I figured out I was related to him. But his band was mainly friends but he had his 3rd cousin by marriage join. Niki Sullivan was in there but then quit because he wasn’t a fan of the traveling. Then it was stuck with Buddy Holly, Joe B Mauldin, and Jerry Allison. Then the crickets got in a argument because Buddy wanted to record in New York. But Jerry and joe wanted to stay in Clovis New Mexico. Also Joe and Jerry were drinking a little bit. Then Buddy on a tour that took his life along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. Maria Elena Holly had a miscarriage and lost the baby. She was devastated and she never remarried again. February 3rd 1959 was then nicknamed The Day The Music Died. And there is some theories that Buddy shot The Big Bopper but there was no way it was possible for Buddy, Ritchie, or The Big Bopper to live. The last thing I want to say is....
    R.I.P

    Yes, that'll be the day
    When you make me cry
    You say you gonna leave
    You know it's a lie

Remembering Niki Sullivan born on June 23, 1937. He was an American rock and roll guitar player. He was one of the three original members of Buddy Holly's backing band, the Crickets. Though he lost interest within a few months of his involvement, his guitar playing was an integral part of Holly's early success. He performed on 27 of the 32 songs Holly and The Crickets recorded over his brief career. He co-wrote a number of his own songs. In 2012, Sullivan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Crickets by a special committee, aimed at correcting the mistake of not including the Crickets with Buddy Holly when he was first inducted in 1986. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niki_Sullivan

Every guitar player that ever lived wants to see Buddy's play on that opening riff and the solo. Here the resolution isn't good enough and the camera cuts away.. again. Someone ought to have slapped that director.
His tone on the intro's last lick is very cool.

This looks like an edit job. Took the live appearance from the Ed Sullivan show and ran it over the studio recording. The Sullivan version was the right tempo but had no guitar break. So the editing here jitters and jumps around that solo part. Nice job though--you hear the studio version of the song and see the band in action. A fitting tribute to an immortal song.

    No Buddy Holly -
    No Beatles
    No Rolling Stones
No Cliff Richards And The Shadows
No Bruce Springsteen And The E-Street Band
    Adam Faith
    Richard Thompson
The first rocker to play a Stratocaster guitar, he achieved a vast
amount of musical innovation in his scant 21 years. He was a
class act. Like Eddie Cochran, he was incredibly talented.
Like Eddie, Buddy left far too early.
Who knows what he could have achieved if he hadn't boarded that
plane in February 1959? His legacy has remained immortal.

Holly at the top of his game December 1957.
Niki Sullivan at left "quit" ( or was fired from) the group after their first theater tour.
His guitar was also stolen after their Brooklyn Paramount shows.
Holly is playing his first Stratocaster which soon disappeared or was given away.
Drummer Jerry Allison, now the last surviving member of the group insists that there is some specific words written by Holly inside the guitar. Over the years, people have claimed to have found Stratocasters that are purportedly " The One".
To date, not one person has been able to correctly describe the interior markings known now ONLY by Allison.
The Stratocaster that was on the 1959 shows is likely the fourth one Holly owned, purchased from Mannys Music in NYC to replace a previous one supplied by Fender stolen along with amps from the band's car in 1958.
It is this last Stratocaster that sat in Ella Holley's closet in Lubbock for decades after being returned to her after the plane crash.
The guitar did not go on the plane on 2/3/59. Rather it was left on the bus and was played by Dion(!,????) on the next night's show in Moorehead MN.
For many years, any fan who happened by the family home could see or even play the guitar for the asking.
Some years ago, Fender was asked to do a clean up on it prior to its installation in a museum exhibit in Lubbock TX.
