Hello, my name is Trish and I’ll be turning 38 at 4:20am when I’m asleep tonight. So, since the early winter last year (2022) I’ve found myself having trouble swallowing certain foods like bread, pretzels, chips, toast, and a few other foods. I have to take rather large sips of water in order for my food to go down my throat and often times I get really bad upper back pain where my spine is as it goes down my throat. Sometimes I have trouble swallowing anything for a few moments as if I completely forgot how to swallow which then sets off a panic attack. About 12 years ago I had severe internal bleeding from my esophagus which had to be cauterized. I had a few biopsies from my stomach which showed H. Pylori. I often get acid reflux and heartburn so bad that it actually comes out of my nose when I’m sleeping. Taking some tums does calm it down for a little bit but I have to keep taking them practically all day. Also, if I eat chocolate at night it happens to me too in my sleep. Should I be concerned about it? I was at one point a good 130lbs and now I’m down to 90lbs thinking that I lost all my weight from a medication. If you doctor could please put in your input in this, I’d highly appreciate you! Thank you!

I've had chronic gerd symptoms for months now, constantly in pain and discomfort, prescribed meds doing nothibg and syptoms getting worse, last few days been feeling lightheaded and constantly dehydrated aswel, only just been referred to gastro specialists so I could be waiting months again. Been told I'm not seen as a priority because I'm only 33 and they don't think it's something serious. I hope for my kids sake it's not esophageal cancer because I'd have no chance to catch it early the way the doctors in my surgery do things
I’m in your boat buddy!! I just had my endoscopy an colonoscopy yesterday after 3 years of sudden onset symptoms of gerd I thought I was having a heart attack and I even felt the palpitations that happened in 2020 when I was thirty they discovered from a ct scan that I had a lymph node that was 2cm it’s a highler lymph node in my chest an my dr then pushed me through for more scans etc after 6 months of waiting an watching to see if it would grow in size an 35,000$ later in 2020 it hadn’t they told me I didn’t have no cancer in my body well about a month later I started having this weird tingling sensation in my upper left thigh it would burn so bad until I put my hand on it an it would stop so I told my dr an he said it’s called myalgia prosthetica okay umm 🤔 I didn’t have this issue before so why now what’s causing all these engine lights to come on well I finally said fuck it I give up an then this past September I started having this weird heaviness in my lower stomach an my balls would throb sorta like so of course I felt around an felt two knots and was like oh shit time to go see him but I needed a good insurance to help so I had to wait well my bowls started charging then he finally last month set me up with a gastrologist an he woke me up yesterday telling me my colon from what he could tell looked fine but my esophagus at the stomach an inside my stomach he took biopsies of a few things so now my anxiety is out the roof plus I have to force myself to be active unlike I was before
I had dysphagia and lost 30kg down the 62kg, heart burn , endoscopy found nothing. I got better over 2 years , had breathing issues too. Bloods all perfect. Found nothing, now no issues , full cat scans etc
For esophagitis there’s no cure. Just like how people are lactose intolerant, I’m supposed to be intolerant to like 70% of the foods I eat. It’s supposed to make symptoms better; however, I just eat what I want and hope that it doesn’t cause cancer or something.
I would take esophagitis over any disease. It’s light compared to t1 diabetes or epilepsy. My baby brother recently got diagnosed with both, kinda sad rn tbh
Almost a year ago I had a cough, chest pains and shortness of breath. I thought it was covid. About a month later, I found it hard to swallow solid foods like meat. I got the hiccups and got the sensation of food being stuck in my throat. I saw my GP and she sent me off to do a barium swallow test, followed by an endoscopy. A month later I was told I had cancer of the oesophagus. I always had indigestion, then about the time I had the cough and chest pains I no longer had indigestion when I ate my wife's curries. My oesophagus had morphed into Barret's oesophagus.
@@DrODonovan All good, it was a blessing I couldn't swallow, sure sign something major was happening and my GP's spider sense tingled so she sent me off to do all the necessary tests. I had surgery 3 months ago, 9 days in hospital, prior to that I had 3 weeks of chemo and radiotherapy which shrunk the 6 cm tumour to 5 mm. It was stage 3 cancer as there was one pesky malignant lymph node. The surgeons assured me there is no cancer as far as the microscopic eye can see. I am planning on returning to work next week. I am on immunotherapy now once a fortnight to make sure the bugger doesn't return. You doctors are magicians, keep up the great work. I am so fortunate to have got this cancer today in 2022 than just 5 years ago with all the brilliant work being done by people like your good self.
@@turbompson4546 I always used to get indigestion and then during 2021 - lockdown; I didn't even realise but I wasn't getting indigestion after eating spicy rich foods like curries and lasagne. I started to drink maybe 200 mls of liquer a day - to pass the time. I always used to drink 4 cups of coffee a day quickly. I never ate a lot of fruit and vegetables. It would have been in the space of 6 months. I was 52 at the time.
I have GERD. I had an endoscopy and a barium test. Other than my esophagus looking terrible and slightly smaller than normal, i didn't have anything abnormal. They said it was on the verge of barretts esophagus. I worry because i vomit up food sometimes, have terrible heartburn, feels like things get stuck in my throat, and i have off and on symptoms of sore throats. Should I be worried

@@EstellaMcgowen Barrets often doesn't become cancerous. It's actually quite rare for the condition to become cancerous. Just because someone has been diagnosed with Barrets doesn't mean they will get cancer.
@donnaw4249 read up barret eventually turns to esophageal cancer so can Gerd let just say it can with some people my partner was diagnosed with barret he didn't take anything for his reflux it turn to esophageal cancer 3 years later he'd tell me it felt like he had something stuck in his throat then he couldn't swallow food it would come up even water he was diagnosed in April 3 -2021 died August 26 2021 4 months from being diagnosed from esophageal cancer so yes even GERD can turn to esophageal cancer it's just who will get it and who wont.
@@EstellaMcgowen I'm very well read up on the statistics for the condition for personal reasons that I won't go into. The average likelihood for Barrett's becoming a cancerous condition is around 1 in 200 for women, and 1 in 187 for men. The chances increase slightly more as you get older. It's at least uncommon according to most studies, if not rare according to other studies.
Ive had food getting stuck behind my chest for the past 7 years. For the past couple years ive had sternum and back pain between my shoulder blades. Im terrified to do an endoscopy because im afraid they will find cancer.
Why no updated videos regarding this topic? 2 years old are the latest I can find. Also, endoscopy should be a check up similar to colonoscopy. My esophageal cancer was discovered in late April 2024, operation May 14, and just finished round 5 of 8 chemo treatments today (actually still have a 24 hour pump). Caught at 2b due to difficulty swallowing and was referred to get the endoscopy - May have saved my life. The surgeon took out 35 lymph nodes and 1 tested positive, hence the follow-up chemo instead of pre- surgery chemo.

I know cant swallow properly for over a year now, always have burning pain in my stomach all day from the second i wake up, always burping. I am am very ill. But the doctor has done an endoscopy and thats it. They said there is a little redness…thats it. I am in agony day and night. Cant eat properly. Life sucks
Hi dr, is there any evidence to suggest cancer of the oesophagus is genetic? My grandfather died of it, my father died of it and so did his twin brother. My grandfather wasn’t a smoker or drinker, but was raised on a Polish diet- lots of red meat - and later worked down a coal mine. My father was a smoker and heavy drinker, but his twin brother didn’t smoke. My father suffered for years with acid reflux, and I find that I often get acid reflux. I quit smoking at the age of 24 and try to avoid food that gives me acid reflux. But I still worry about the possible genetic risk factor.
Thanks. I found this resource which suggests it doesn’t have a strong inheritance link (unlike certain other cancers such as breast etc) - amp.cancer.org/cancer/esophagus-cancer/causes-risks-prevention/what-causes.html

I’m a 76 year old female, I’ve had heartburn, and indigestion for years. I have noticed that in the last year it has gotten worse but I have had this for 10 years or longer. When I get the acid reflux, I can feel it in my esophagus, and if I lay down, I can feel it almost coming up. It won’t go away until I get up go to the garbage can or somewhere and gag myself just a little bit and it all comes up after that I feel better I do feel like my throat is irritated. I can swallow just fine, I’ve just recently realize exactly what it was and have started to work on my diet to do a plant-based diet . I do have shortness of breath which I had attributed to asthma, which I also have but maybe it’s from the acid reflux. I did not know if that acid reflux would cause shortness of breath , after I throw up, the acid reflux goes away, and I can lay down and go to sleep. I do clear my throat a lot, but I also have postnasal drip. Sometimes it’s really hard to tell what the symptoms are really from. I have an appointment with my GP in a month and I’m going to discuss this with him. I’ve never told him that I even have it. Lately after I gag myself to throw up, I notice I am getting bad stomach cramps, and a swollen stomach. Do you think I should wait even a month to go see my GP. Thank you so much for this video.
A few months ago I had heart palpitations my stomach was feeling heavy I went to consult a doctor she said I had acid reflux she prescribed ameprozole.taking 20mg everyday now have nausea I regurgitate .now I feel weak and fatigue .
Ive got acute gastric symptoms ive been going to the er for, i get a endo in a month. I fit your guidlines but I go to the VA here in America and they would rather me dead anyways.
Hi Dr Donovan, thanks for this video. I have been having some odd symptoms lately which are that I feel like I have a lump in my throat just below the Adam's apple area which may or may not be accompanied with a feeling of tightness in my throat when swallowing saliva, but no difficulty in eating any foods, hard crusty French bread and meats are fine. I do find I get this sort of symptom an hour or two after eating mostly the evening meal and particularly with very fatty/processed oil rich foods like a fish and chippy. And this is apparently worse if I have had a few drinks the night before, as I'm feeling now. I have an appointment with my GP next week Wed, and have to say its a bit concerning. Could this be anything liver related as I've periodically had a slight pain there over the last few years? Oh and I don't really have any of the burnt sensations of reflux, assuming that is always associated with burning sensations....
I have esophageal nut cracker spasms and had the upper gi Their Exhausting these attacks, so many symptoms when you have these attacks so many things can trigger them I'm finding Dizapan work sometimes I have had as a prn Now trying famotidine tablets, and baclofan Tablets much of the time I have a extremely hot bath and lay in it for over a hour , Back and forth till it eases, Helps me
Is dysphagia difficulty swallowing ALL food. I've been referred to urgent endoscopy cause I said I was struggling to swallow food but it's only certain food, bread pasta wheat. Told doc I lost 8lb in 3 weeks. But I had been eating smaller portions and getting an extra 5000 step a day in. Surly that would be cause for weight lose?
@Doctor O'Donovan ... Unfortunately I've had these symptoms / red flags for over five years, and although the now inevitable total Oesophagectomy looms nearer and nearer with each passing week, I don't have Oesophageal cancer or even Barratts oesophagus. I've been on the 2WW referral system for suspected Oesophageal, head & neck, Lymphoma and Gastric cancer .. All have lead to me having endless Endoscopys, Lymph node biopsies, balloon dilations, Flexi Sigmoids, Tongue biopsies, extended barium swallows, CTs, MRIs and even Oesophageal botox injections. Basically I have multiple Oesophageal strictures, Oesophagitis, an Oesophageal diverticulum between the strictures with a fistula joining up the diverticulum with my previous Fundoplication surgery site .... The symptoms in the video do not mean that it's cancer, it could be benign but just as bad with life long implications.

Not much appetite but food goes down with little to no resistance. Slight burning in stomach, although I'm on omeprozole. Any cause for concern here do you think?
My doctor performed a transnasal esophageal exam.. she said she didn’t find anything concerning.. she said she found bumps on my throat and esophagus lining inflamed. Now I have to take pantoprazole, a barium test and strict diet.. is this normal ???? What causes this ?
I was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer during combination colonoscopy and endoscopy exam. The endoscopy was a after thought add to my colonoscopy because of my GERD. When the Doctor observed some inflammation and biopsied some tissue proving positive for cancer. Thankfully it appears to be discovered early. Still doing more tests to determine the extent of the cancer. I had no other symptoms beyond the GERD

I get bad pain in the cardiac sphincter when first eating. Feels like food gets stuck ( constricted oesophagus ) . Start hiccups and coughing and its a horrible pain.
I feel like phlegm is stuck inside my throat most of the time ,and when i try to (i don't know how to say this ) spit, take the phlegm from my throat to my mouth , it goes and my throat clears , i am an ex smoker ,dry nose , difficulty swallowing saliva in the night are more conditions i have i guess ., Should i be worried!?? 🚶🏽♂️🥲

I have been having worst heartburn i have ever had recently despite being on ppi's. Usually if i take my ppi my symptoms are fine. First started having noticeable symptoms 3 years ago. I had an endoscopy a little over 2 years ago no signs of esophagitis or anything wrong... Could this disease develop in the last 2 years like that?
Thanks for the info. I’ve been experiencing constant heartburn for years; would a barium swallow test be able to determine oesophageal cancer? I would find it difficult to have an endoscopy due to a severe gag reflex. Any help appreciated.

I’ve been having issues with pressure around the thyroid area just below the adams apple. I’m on a heartburn medication, have difficulty swallowing and my ears are bothering me. I can no longer sleep on my stomach because of the pressure on the throat. My Dr thought it was a thyroid issue. Had a CT scan with contrast and that came back all normal. Would esophageal cancer show up on this scan ? I’m making an appointment with my GI Dr on Monday. Thanks for any input.
The Thyroid Specialist said it was on the larger side of the normal range. All scopes and test came back normal. My GI Dr stretched out my esophagus and that relieved the pressure and cured my swallowing issues. Not sure what was causing the ringing but that subsided over time. I appreciate the follow ups and sorry it took so long to respond.

That’s a shame how these doctors be acting when it comes to something serious as cancer
My grandma died from this😢 she was cured the first time, but the tumor returned highly aggressively the second time 😢
I had dysphagia and lost 30kg down the 62kg, heart burn , endoscopy found nothing. I got better over 2 years , had breathing issues too. Bloods all perfect. Found nothing, now no issues , full cat scans etc
What's the diagnosis
Same they diagnosed me with esophagitus
How u cure?
For esophagitis there’s no cure. Just like how people are lactose intolerant, I’m supposed to be intolerant to like 70% of the foods I eat. It’s supposed to make symptoms better; however, I just eat what I want and hope that it doesn’t cause cancer or something.
I would take esophagitis over any disease. It’s light compared to t1 diabetes or epilepsy. My baby brother recently got diagnosed with both, kinda sad rn tbh
The age doesn't really matter.Young people are getting it too.
What if I just have pain but swallowing is normal.
Thanks so much for what was perhaps the clearest explanation I've seen re: symptoms which are suspicious and warrant an endoscopy.
It’s a pleasure
Almost a year ago I had a cough, chest pains and shortness of breath. I thought it was covid. About a month later, I found it hard to swallow solid foods like meat. I got the hiccups and got the sensation of food being stuck in my throat. I saw my GP and she sent me off to do a barium swallow test, followed by an endoscopy. A month later I was told I had cancer of the oesophagus. I always had indigestion, then about the time I had the cough and chest pains I no longer had indigestion when I ate my wife's curries. My oesophagus had morphed into Barret's oesophagus.
Sorry to hear this. Hope you’re doing ok

Barrets often doesn't become cancerous.
@@EstellaMcgowen
I'm very well read up on the statistics for the condition for personal reasons that I won't go into. The average likelihood for Barrett's becoming a cancerous condition is around 1 in 200 for women, and 1 in 187 for men. The chances increase slightly more as you get older. It's at least uncommon according to most studies, if not rare according to other studies.

A plant based diet is the worst thing you can do, try carnivore it helped me

Ive got acute gastric symptoms ive been going to the er for, i get a endo in a month. I fit your guidlines but I go to the VA here in America and they would rather me dead anyways.
How are you doing now? What did they find?
Hey how u doing. what’s is the prognosis
I’m not a GP or doctor but I am celiac. I get this sensation all the time when I don’t follow the diet. get tested

I had osophegitis in march took medication but also drank alot 3 mths after taking the medication my symptoms got worse obviously but barable but 4 wks ago i got a feeling of lump in the throat when swallowing saliva or eating i had another gasotropy it shoeed up normal but i have issues with my osephegis still the lump sounds like knuckles cracking

The endoscopy was a after thought add to my colonoscopy because of my GERD.

I’ve been having issues with pressure around the thyroid area just below the adams apple. I’m on a heartburn medication, have difficulty swallowing and my ears are bothering me. How was your Appointment with your GI? Hope everything's ok.
Any update on your condition? Hope everything was normal.
The Thyroid Specialist said it was on the larger side of the normal range. All scopes and test came back normal.
