New owner to a mk4, i have the water droplets on the windows to. Particularly the rear hatch. The door card sealing is now on my to do list thanks to you! I have read several how to but this is the 1st video. It got me on track thank you so! Going to check the rear sunroof drains and the cowl too. Front sunroof drains are running fine! You did an excellent job on this thanks again!
Nice one man!! So when you say rear hatch are you talking about the boot area? I think the main headache with this problem is finding where the water is coming from. Once you know where the water is accessing the car it becomes a lot easier. Good luck and I hope the video really helps you 👊🏾 thank you
The boot area. I have heard of the drain lines being knocked off the sunroof and letting water into the car i hope that's not it i never messed with a headliner before. Hoping they are just clogged. Thanks again, appreciate your positive videos
Yes, one of my friends had issues with his drain lines on a sunroof model as well. I think they came off, but I can't remember how he repaired it all. Fingers crossed you get it all sorted soon. Thanks man keep the positivity going brother 🙏🏾
Did a re sealing sort this issue in the end? There are drain slots in the bottom of the doors also. Having same issue with my golf at moment, a re seal maybe in order when i fit replacement central door locking mechanism soon. Just to mention the bottom door drains are totally open in mine and not blocked yet water is coming in, in an identical place..
Gonna give this a try after I get my GTTDI started 😂 first off I found a hole in the footwell! (Most likely drainage for previous owner) I’ve bogged (filler/sealant) it and water is still coming through and not through the pollen filter because I took the glovebox and no sign of damp or water so the door will most likely be the problem. Thankyou!
Hey man, if you read through the comments some of the guys have pretty good ideas of where the water could be coming in. This fix detailed in the video I think stops moisture and condensation but not actual water leaks. I still have a few things to try myself as it is apparent water is still coming in, every time I try something new I will document it. Good luck with the car man and let me know if you fix it 👊🏾
Thankyou so much for sharing this. It was so easy to follow and so helpful. I used silicone instead of the tape. Fingers crossed it's been a week since and I've yet to wipe the inside of my mk4 windscreen. I had been using 2 towels in the morning and again after work to dry it. After fixing it, I did use a small dehumidifier and also vacuumed the water up which I think has helped dry it out. Big thankyou again
You are welcome, I hope it all helps you very much. I also have another video of how I fixed a worse water leak that was getting in to my car. I feel your pain, it was so difficult to live with this problem. Good luck, I hope it all works out well for you.
The MK 4 is a great car, however as this video shows they do sometimes suffer water ingress and also electrical problems. Mine has a bad passenger footwell leak most likely caused by the pollen filter housing seal. I've decided to remove the entire carpet and underlay which in itself is a good 2 to 3 hour job with all the tools to hand, the worst part was trying to get the carpet past the dashboard support bracket which is a pain to remove. Good video mate.
Yes I totally agree with you and I have had a more people mentioning it now that the weather has got worse. Unfortunately some cars will have common problems that come to surface with age and it is left to us to fix them. I have heard the pollen filter is a common one too yes. Damn, removing all of that stuff sounds like a long and difficult job but at least you have done it now. I hope it is the one and only time you have this difficulty. Good luck though and thanks for the comment and feedback 👍🏽
Great video mate will be doing this soon my floor was soaked turned out to be the bonnet cable release grommet under the wipers water was come down behind the pedals
Hey man thank you very much!! I think I may be having issues with the bonnet release cable grommet too actually. I get water coming down behind pedals but I thought it was the condensation that runs down the windscreen. Good luck man

Water also leaks out of the fir tree clips that hold the rubber tabs of the seal under the door - exactly where the water pools and runs in over the door seal, it's worth putting some Butyl or silicone over the holes where the clips come through if you are inside the door.
👍👍Great video, i have a 5dr mk4 tdi with water ingress in the drivers footwell only, I've stripped all the seats out and lifted the carpet as i thought it may have been the matrix😳 ..as it seems to be coming from the bulkhead area buy can't be 100%😩 ..I'll check my door seal first after seeing this, thanks mate.
I still have water getting in even after doing that fix. I had the suspicion that it was coming from up behind the dash/bulkhead area. The other day I went to hoover the car and a trickle of water came down from behind the dash on the drivers side. My next place to check is the grommet for the bonnet release cable. If you trace that in from the engine bay area you will be able to find it. I think water is sitting there because of leaves and debris stopping it draining properly down underneath the scuttle panel. Have a feel up above the pedals and above the bonnet release latch and see what you can find. Good luck, if I find anything else I will make a video on that too. Thanks mate and good luck to you 👍🏽
@@SPOOLINUP Your water ingress will be the lower front wheel arch area, where the mudflap fits (or would fit) you need to remove the wheels then take out the plastic arch liner (or pull it back and wedge it)and then look directly behind it where **the lower part of the wing meets the front door, ** it will be full of mud and leaves etc, it blocks the drain holes and allows water into the car, next place i'd look is the cabin filter housing, notorious for leaking around the edge of the housing again lift it out and silicone it around the edge and seat it back in place. thirdly make sure your rear wiper isn't leaking fluid into the tailgate they can leak internally. check drain holes on the sunroof if you have one fitted they block up for fun! just what i've learned over the years of owning mk4's and octavia 1u. good luck buddy

I am sure you know where it is - but for any noobs like me that is in the engine bay - the passenger side beneath the windscreen.
No problem, I think I still have a leak and I think its the drivers side door seal, I will be fixing that soon and will share a video about that. Thanks for letting me know about the pollen filter as well 👍🏽
Hi! There are drain holes in the bottom of the doors too - sure you know - they can get blocked. @@cheshiresmileclinic Hahaha thanks again mate, yes I will also check the drain holes as there is nothing worse than having water in your car! Takes ages to demist and making mould
Depending how your using the vehicle, Duct tape outside window and seal water access, monitor dampness in car, if it clears, you know its the panel seals. Useful for getting moisture out of the carpet, lay down a couple of old dry towels on the damp area, press down, and then weigh down with a brick, leave 24 hours and the moisture should transfer eventually from the wet into the dry towels
Hey, yes that is a good idea for sure. I still have water coming in this winter as well so I need to look into it again and see what I can find. That is a useful tip for drying the car as well, thanks man 👍🏽
Yeah man it takes too long to clear, at one point I had droplets and a faulty thermostat so my car would not even warm up to clear the screen! You are welcome and good luck fixing the problem.
Ive got this problem now and its definitely making me sick. Also got to drive a newborn back from spain to UK. Was there any other seals you replaced too like window ones? Surely the water has to come in somewhere first before it gets to the inner seal right? Just want to make sure i get everything done at once. Appreciate the video
Hi mate, sorry to hear that it's been causing you health issues too. I do have another video where I sealed up other bits. If you have a sunroof, there is potential for other problems regarding water leaking into the car. Check out my other video on the water leaking and you may see a fix there.
@@SPOOLINUP have done bro appreciate that. Looks like I got to get some tools and do it myself trying to convince a garage to do it was a myth thanks for explaining how
Sorry for the late reply, I actually think I just searched on Google for those clips and bough them. Glad the video helped, I made another one after this one to fix more water in the footwell issues. Thanks also for subscribing mate 👍🏽
No worries mate, between the two you shall be sorted. If anything the second one solved my issues, all that gunk under the scuttle panel by the wipers was so bad.
Had the same similar issue with a Mk2 Golf - went out to it after a 40 minute storm and there was about 4 inches of standing water in the OSR footwell..... ended up siliconing up the gap between the window glass and the door 🙄
@@SPOOLINUP there was so much when I wet and dry hoovered it out it filled 3/4 of a large Vax hoover 😕 - along with the foot wells being soaked the fuse box was absolutely dripping too due to a blocked drain channel..... Metal coat hanger and black silicon solved it all, despite never being able to open the rear windows again 😂
Ahh damn man that sounds bad! At least the weather is getting better anyway. Wet vac is a life saver for these kinds of jobs. Where was this drain channel that was blocked? I feel your pain man you have to do what you have to do to solve these issues and removing trim/panels and stuff isn't easy man.
@@SPOOLINUP Had back lights removed and masticked back on so they're sealed and the door seals appear firm and in tact. The rear passenger footwell behind the driver's seat is soggy this winter. Got it covered with a tarp with the windows slightly open for airing.I think it may be the sun roof drainage but I've cleared out the back drain holes which drain into the top of the boot. Or could be the inner door seal.
Yes mate it can be a nightmare, I havent gone to the Golf for over a week now and its been raining on and off, im hoping it is ok. I used to get a little wet patch near the bottom of the door seal at the back of the door but the car is parked on a slight slope so maybe it treacles in through a gap. Only time will tell. Good luck with it either way. Fingers crossed 🤞
i had the same issue, take the seats out and remove the carpet, you probably got a swimming pool under the carpet, the underlay under the carpet will take forever to dry out in the car, mine took a few days outside of the car, also you can see if the leak has been fixed with no carpet in the car
Hey, sorry for the late reply. You are right, I could have done more and to be honest I think there may still be a leak but only a week of rain will prove that, wait and see I guess.
Have you found where the water comes in though? I found the water coming in behind the dashboard in the end. I have a part two video which shows this and it may also help you.
@@SPOOLINUP mine was the sunroof drains at the front. The pipes weren’t connected to the rubber grommets on the door shuts. I’ve tested the connect release bung and look box under the scuttle panel. Poured water through and no leaks. I just want to reseal door panels for piece of one that’s all. 👍
@MrMbb911 Ahhh I see, one of my friends had that issue with the sunroof, he said it was a real pain trying to reconnect the drainage system there. How did you find the job?
Where do I get that seal from as I’ve got the same problem, I literally dried it all out and the past few days it’d rained now I’ve got a swimming pool in my drivers footwell🙄😂
Mate honestly it's the worst. If you search 8mm butyl seal strip on Google you should find it fairly quickly. Its unbelievable how many people are affected by this problem 😳. Good luck though
I brought a mk1 leon a few weeks back, as soon as I got it I installed a boost gauge. When i fed the hose line through behind the glove box I took the rubber grommet out completely, well surprise surprise it rained the other day and the front passenger side had a swimming pool in the foot well.Could this be leaking because I took the grommet out ? Or maybe a seal on the door ?
Hiya mate yes that could well be the problem. Although these Seats and Golfs have the common problem of letting water in from many different places that is what I would go for first. Get your hand up and feel up behind the dash/glove box and see if it is wet. Also make sure you secured the cover for the pollen filter properly as this can also allow water inside. Let me know how you get on.
@@SPOOLINUP cheers bro, I googled it aswell as watching videos here on TH-cam, and it came up straight away about the pollen filter, the boost gauge pipe goes through the pollen filter housing so I'm guessing it's the first place I should check. There and the rubber grommet, I'll have to silicone the hole where the grommet was as like an idiot I took the grommet out and chucked it away instead of drilling a hole for the tube.Ill keep you posted bro and your video's are really helpfull 👊
Mate that water coming in can be a real big pain resulting in mould and a damaged interior. In the winter when our are left with water on your windows from the inside its so annoying. Hopefully you can get that sorted nice and easily. Have you checked Google to see if you can buy a new grommet? I would say its totally possible. Im sure silicone will work really well too. Good luck, you may as well check it all anyway. Thank you mate, nice one 👍

My MK4 has water in drivers side & passenger side behind driver - doing my head in. Guy at the garage said to just drill holes in the floor?? Any comments?!!!
I know a few possible causes, water could be running back from the front like mine. Bonnet release cable has a grommet that fails, sealing around the inner parts of the door, door drain holes blocked, door seals not working as they should, one guy said recently a build up of mud, leaves etc behind the inner wheel arch, sun roof seals leaking if you have a sun roof. See if you can trace it before you start drilling holes lol.
@@SPOOLINUP I'm going to start looking tomorrow but I'm not very mechanical! I liked the idea of drilling holes as it'd be easy but obviously it doesn't solve the problem... Cheers for getting back 😊 👍
Thats the only thing man, doesnt solve the problem. Have a feel around up above the pedals and behind the glove box. Check the bottom of the doors, there are drain holes there and just check from the top down I would say mate.
Hey Bro I have the same damn problem with my golf mk4 but its a 4 door and its only getting water from drivers footwell and the passenger on the back on the other side. What I tried so far is remove all the floor carpet and sealed the rubber caps on the car and also cleaned the water drains under the bonnet and under the fenders. Is there any other spot where the water can leak cus I dont even have a sun roof and its still leaking. P.S Obviously I will try this fix aswell. Any idea where I can find these rubber seals online ? I didnt have any luck finding them
Hey man, I'm not even 100% mine is solved until the bad weather returns. You can also check all of the seals around the doors and see if they are ok. I have also recently found a gap between the bottom of the windscreen and the seal on the drivers side. I have a friend who tried to tell me that its the seal at the bottom of the door not letting water out when it runs around the door but I don't think he is right. Check if it is coming down behind the dash, look up about the pedals and feel the carpet up there because it might be coming from around that corner of the windscreen. Good luck either way bro. Type in Butyl seal strips or butyl seal adhesive in Google and give that a shot mate. 👍🏽
I got Bora Mk4 Variant, had to remove whole interior to identify leaks. For me it was roof relings, both side mirrors, rear lamps and all four doors with problem similar to video. Leaks may also come from under whindshield, air conditioning evaporator (sometimes its drainage is cloged like with sunroof), cable for opening hood. The best way is to remove seats, side panels and whole carpet with that sound insulation and then look for leaks. Good think is to use garden hose and water different parts of car. For example that butyl stripes leaks more when car is parked on slope sideways
@@matpio7 Yes actually since doing the video I have realised that ad the weather is getting worse I think i have to replace a door seal, the car is parked on a slope and water sits on the sill and works its way past the seal for the door.
That is a useful tip for drying the car as well, thanks man 👍🏽
i get the droplets on my windscreen and it does my head in im going to check this next thank you for the idea!
Yeah man it takes too long to clear, at one point I had droplets and a faulty thermostat so my car would not even warm up to clear the screen! You are welcome and good luck fixing the problem.
Pause you video around 6:50 you can possibly see water staining on the panel from the bottom of the speaker, it was more obvious on ours though.
Credit Bruv' , proper walk through, ta 👊
Respect man thanks for your comment 👊🏾
Looks like I got to get some tools and do it myself trying to convince a garage to do it was a myth thanks for explaining how
Cheers for your help mate, where you do get the door clip things from? Cheers, subscribed 👍🏼
Sorry for the late reply, I actually think I just searched on Google for those clips and bough them. Glad the video helped, I made another one after this one to fix more water in the footwell issues. Thanks also for subscribing mate 👍🏽
@@SPOOLINUP appreciate it 👍🏼 I’ve watched both vids on the leaks, top man 👍🏼
No worries mate, between the two you shall be sorted.
Wow!!! Its literally the worst thing having water in your car, it looks so stagnant and disgusting 🤣 dont wish it on my enemy
Thank you.... got the same problem with my 04 Polo.
Hey mate, could also be the door seals/weather strips. I'm anticipating more water leaking in this winter lol. Good luck
@@SPOOLINUP if it still leaks get some 6mm x 9mm d shaped rubber seal from ebay and replace the whole thing, worked a treat for me on 2 cars
@@mathjuk could you link this?
Nice one guys 👍🏽

This is a quailty video thanks 😄 I’m about to do this soon aswell.
I have 9.5mm thickness butyl tape is this ok or does it have to be 6mm?
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I don't think having slightly thicker butyl tape will matter that much. Have you done it yet?
@@SPOOLINUP I haven’t done it yet but will be doing it soon. I’m going to do both doors as mine is a 3 door GTI
Good video, will try this. Thanks
Thank you, do your research and you can try anything. Good luck
@@SPOOLINUP cheer I appreciate it!
You are welcome man
I brought a mk1 leon a few weeks back, as soon as I got it I installed a boost gauge.
Absolute diamond!
Good luck, read through the comments of the video because there is some really good suggestions and advice from what other people experienced! I have water coming in again so back to the drawing board.
Thanks man, I'm having the same problem.
You are welcome, there are still many other causes to investigate. I am having the problem again this year, must be something else again. Good luck
Ahh man that’s annoying thankfully mine hasn’t done that.. Enjoying your vids 👍🏻
Thanks Glen, you are making your way through the videos!! I hope you don't get that problem, its really irritating. 👍🏽
@@SPOOLINUP Yeah watching them all mate enjoying your content and trying to show u support would like to see your channel grow.. I think ur delivery of videos is really good, Keep going 👍🏻
Random question, if water is coming in behind that panel, and its is sealed, where does it go ? Or supposed to go ?
Hi, there are drain holes at the bottom of the door where the water is supposed to exit.
@@SPOOLINUP Thanks - I'll do it tomorrow 👍
Good luck man 😉
Big help, cheers son
No worries man I hope it helped you mate and all works out.
Same in both my golfs and my Leon
Yes its supposed to be a rely common problem, I still have a leak there
I have an '03 Seat Leon 1.8 20V SE Auto and it's currently doing this :(
Its literally the worst thing man, I need to take another look into mine, there are many more things that it could still be :(
@@SPOOLINUP as it happens i also have the exact same dehumidifier :D
Hahaha did you buy it from Halfords? 🤣🤣
@@SPOOLINUP You know this! :D
Halfrauds as it is also known as ; )
Hey Bro I have the same damn problem with my golf mk4 but its a 4 door and its only getting water from drivers footwell and the passenger on the back on the other side.
I am glad you have fixed your car and thanks, this may help me in the future.
Nice job! Where did you get the strips from?
If you Google butyl sealing strips or tape it should come up with plenty of options.
3:11 Two more stickers and free coffeeeee :D
😂😂😂 that made my day mate 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
This is stressing me the fuck out lol
You and me both, I still have water coming in and I will be making another video hopefully actually fixing it this time.
