Rain leak fix/sunroof drain fix VW MKIV

  • I had a rain leak in my 2003 GTI. After a storm, I would find the passenger floorboard to be soaked even to the back seat. I struggle to find the problem, I cleaned rain tray, checked cabin air filter seal, and tried to run a line through sun roof drains. It took me awhile to figure out that my sun roof drain hoses were not connected to their exit gromet. Once I identified the problem I found it challenging to reconnect the two, as there is minimal work space and poor angles. I found that I could use my weed wacker wire to line thing up and connect the two. Thinking others may have a similar problem, I made this video.

I never comment on TH-cam videos, but MAN did I have to on this one! After clearing the clog, my father and I could not for the life of us figure out how to get the plug back onto hose. The weed whacker line trick was brilliant. Worked like a charm! Thank you thank you thank you!

Many many thanks!!!! This was extremely helpful. This is my first car and I've been back and forth trying to understand why water was leaking into my car and how could I solve it. This was my solution!! Now I can leave the car out and not worry about having a lake below the pedals! Than you so much man, this is amazing 👏

The factory recall solution to the front drains being prone to clogging is to clip the lower end of the A pillar drain rubber nipple off, so you have a free flow situation instead of the restricted nipple that comes stock. Can be done easily with some side-cutters without dismantling anything.
If you have to re-attach the nipple to the tube as in this video, I would also apply a FILM of silicone sealant to the connection AND tube before assembly. Notice I said Film! - make sure none gets into the tube!! Don't goober it up! A small amount is all you need. You can use a q-tip to apply the film and one of those small mirrors from the auto supply to apply it on the hose, although you may have to go by "feel" since you may need one hand to steady the hose from inside the car. Whatever's clever!
    Excellent video D-Trick!

So it’s the actual end of the drain that clogs where the water is supposed to come out?

You also need to cut the drain grommets in the rain tray that are below your battery tray and brake booster.

Just bought a 2004 Jetta. Didn't realize until after I bought it that it had major sunroof leak and very wet floors....after watching your video we figured out that both front tubes were not connected to the exit grommet. Used your technique with weed whacker wire and problem solved! Would never have thought of that on my own! Hope they will stay connected. THANK YOU!!

I didn't have a clog, and was able to manage to get a grip on the hose with pliers, but the only thing that actually got the hose back on the grommet was your trick with the weed trimmer line! Thank you so much for this video!!!

Thank you for this video. My 2005 GLI was not draining out of the right side and the floor was soaked. Thank you so much!, my older car is 2001 Jetta GLX VR6, it was the first car I ever bought and I still have it but I was noticing wet floors in the front and rear passenger foot well. I suspected a clogged or broken drain hoses but I didn't even know where to begin till I saw your video. I opened my sunroof and poured water in the tiny holes on top and there was no water coming out from the passenger side one, I pulled the little nipple out from the passenger side and that thing was completely clogged with dirt, I cleaned it and used your weed wacker line trick and it worked on the first time like a charm and now the water is perfectly flowing from where it should be so thanks once more!.

If you undo the grab handle, and sunvisor, its possible to get to the top end of the pipe. I cut mine and inserted a bit of 1/2 in hose in order to make the hose longer. I'm guessing the plastic hose may have shrunk over time, which is why it became disconnected. Being longer, it is also easier to grab and put back into the grommet!

Nice job. I clean my sun roof drain holes at least once a year by squirting dawn dish detergent down each of the four holes, two in front and two in back, then rinse the with hot water from a tea kettle. I love the idea of using weed wacker cord to re-attach the disconnected grommets.

Many thanks for posting this video. It appears to have worked but only time will tell. I have vacuumed a washing up bowl full of water out of the carpet during its leaky period. I had to remove a dash mounting bracket from the side you filmed but that's my drivers side in the UK and I ended up removing a whole load of relay mounts and other bits and pieces to remove this plate to get access to the hole in the back you referred to. Not a recommended job for large hands. Thanks again.

Another +1 my friend. You saved my a$$! I used your weed whacker line approach, but I changed it up a bit.
I started by feeding the line through the drain hose and heard it slapping around which confirmed the hose was disconnected from the spout.
I then removed the spout and again confirmed the hose was disconnected.
I then grabbed the line, pulled it through the hole in the body and also ran it through the rubber drain spout.
What I did differently though was after I pulled the line through the spout, I tied it around a large washer I had laying around.
I then pulled the line up towards the sun roof which snugged the washer up against the end of the drain spout.
While pulling up with a good amount of pressure I wiggled the spout around until it seated back on the drain hose. (I also let the rubber spout go fully into the hole in the body to make sure it was on all the way.)
Again, you saved me. Owe you many beers as Aaron said.

Just fixed this exact issue on my Golf Mk4 in UK, so steering wheel was on the opposite side which made it trickier - I couldn't get my hand inside the car to get a hold of the tube at all. Thankfully, your strimmer cable trick was a great idea. I tried with strimmer cable but it was a bit finer than yours, so wouldn't push all the way down the tube. I used some old rubber coated wire that had been pulled out of the walls of my house instead during recent renovation works - this was much stronger so I could push down the tube easily from the top (helped by a bit of cooking oil!) Pulling this taught I managed to push the rubber gromit back onto the tube! Worked perfectly. Thanks!!! Hopefully my Golf will now dry out as the weather warms up. It's been a nightmare through Winter with ice forming inside the windscreen! Cheers, Ian, 30/01/2016.

My Mk4 Golf has an airbag warning light on the dash. (Which will cause the car to fail its annual safety check next week.) The fault code says "driver's side air bag crash sensor - short to ground." That crash sensor is under the carpet in the driver footwell. I took up the rubber mat and it was damp underneath. Dug in, pulled up the carpet, and sure enough the crash sensor and the wiring connector to it was completely soaked, so I'm guessing that was why it was shorting to ground.
I'm hoping that will sort the airbag warning light issue once it's dried out, but I will still need to find out where that water is coming from. The sunroof will be the first thing I check. Thanks for the tip on lining the tubes up with the 2.5mm strimmer line (0.105 inch weedwhacker wire).
    ........
    [Next day now...]
OK, so I dreid the crash sensor out thoroughly both inside and out, but it still doesn't work. It is not 100% sealed - there is a tiny air breather hole - so I guess moisture would have been getting in there for years and has now caused the sensor to fail. New sensor needed. £204 from VW. Ouch, but never mind. Back to the sunroof drain...
Testing revealed that water was indeed running down onto the floor from the sunroof drain. 'Weedwhacker line' was duly purchased, it went down the tube OK and out of the door jamb, but I still can't see how to pop the tube into the grommet securely (not that it was secure before clearly). I'm working on the driver's side and there is way too much stuff in the way to get a hand up under the dash to feel the tube.
(The rubber grommet fitting was completely blocked with crud. What I have done is to cut off the narrower, restricted part on the end of the grommet, so there is no longer any 'bottleneck' for crud to build up in. I think that is really the root of the problem: crud was always going to build up there, causing water to back up, increasing pressure somewhat and making it more likely that water would leak out inside the car, and more likely that eventually the tube would pop out of the grommet.)
So, it may be that the tube will just 'hang' into the rubber tube in the back of the grommet. That may be the best I can do. But I'll have a go and see how I get on...
    ............
[Final update...] Yes, well it worked. I tied a knot in the weedwhacker line at the sunroof end, so I could pull the line tight at the bottom end and jiggle the rubber grommet over the plastic tube. I would have been happier if i could have pushed the tube into teh grommet, but that just wasn't possible. When all was done I did pokean allen key gently up into the rubber grommet and I could feel that the plastic tube was there, and was, at the very least, not completely loose. No leakage into the car; all the water drains out where it should now. Tomorrrow, I'll do the passenger side.
Thanks super-much for the useful tips here.

You gotta be careful doing this cause you could potentially pull the tube off the sunroof assembly nipple. The rear sunroof drains are more prone to failure, not where it exits but at the sunroof assembly. So if you get water ingress on the rear floor boards you can assume that’s the cause.
You don’t need to remove your dash but you do need to remove your headliner which is pretty easy, unless you have a-pillar air bags then it takes a little longer because of the first clip holding the trim. Once you have the headliner removed you can just pop the hose off the nipple and feed it down so you have slack to pull out where the grommet is and do a proper fix once.
You also want to cut the nipples off the grommets to create a drain the same diameter as the tubing.
Then you’ll want to locate the two drain grommets in the rain tray under the hood and cut them pretty much in half. If those get backed up you can also expect the possibility of water ingress from 3 places: the cabin filter housing or the sealed ECU box if their gaskets are bad or the grommet for the hood release.
Less common are the seals for the door windows and the Fuba roof antenna seal/gasket.
Lucky you didn’t get the leak on the drivers footwell where the CCM (convenience control module/computer) is cause that just causes tons of havoc.
Great idea with the weed whacker line. Some people also use bike brake/derailleur cables.

Tank you, The Video helped me to solve the same problem i had, but i think we must think about how the problem appeared. My suggestion is The Tube disconnect to the Rubber because of too much pressure from the water when the tube is Blockage from the dust and dirt . So after the tube is connected again, it must be cleaned very often.

Much like Jeffrey below, I NEVER comment on youtube videos but you nailed this one man. Thank you so much for saving me time and money, worked like a charm. And even the part of making sure both sides were clear based on additional workload etc, went above and beyond. Hope everything worked out with the date haha next time you're in Boston drinks on me brother!

Have a Range Rover TDV8 with blocked drain tubes. It makes a nice 'gurgling' sound when the tubes are full and you are driving!! Have tried the 'weed whacker' option but to no avail will try hot water and THINNER 'weed whacker' wire as the stuff I have is a bit too stiff...Great video BTW.

btw, i have this problem in my car and like you say, it is embarrassing to be bailing out the car not to mention it takes days to dry out the carpets. one morning i drove off and as the sun was coming up, i lowered the visor and water gushed out of it and soaked my entire shirt front and crotch. explain that when you arrive at work on a sunny day... :(

Sick of water pooling on my floor I finally ran weed wacker line through my front drains last night - both side would feed down to about near the rubber boot at the end but wont go. Figured it was plugged so I kept pushing and turning / some dirty sludge water came out so I thought I was making progress. But I decided to go backwards from the rubber boot upwards and I somehow able to fit unlimited length of line in and it never comes out the sunroof... F*** Must be disconnected in there. I might have actually pushed it off by pushing the line in backwards - when it hits the blockage and i pushed it actually pushed the line off?
So glad I found this video - not sure how you got hand in there to hold the inner tube on the driver side like you did passenger side but I assume there is a way?
There are also 2 rear drains - the holes in the sunroof track that go to the rear are kind of hidden. I know my driver side rear is blocked. Those drain nipples are under the rear bumper cover for the golf at least (looks like most people get at them for cleaning from the interior side).

My notes that may assist others:
After trying various other possible leak points (ventilation inlet on bulkhead, inner door panels) I finally tested the front sunroof drain. It was no longer connected to the nipple on the door pillar. I could hear the test water dribbling down the pillar but not a drop from the nipple.
I gained access to the the upper connection of the drain tube by dropping the headlining but the tube is very well attached at this end - no need to drop the headlining to solve this issue.
So to solve without dropping the headlining:
    1. Ease out the drain nipple / grommet
    2. Feed a tube or stiff wire down the drain tube from the sunroof at the top. I used some 6mm outside diameter pneumatic tubing that I had in the man cave.
    3. Feed that tube / stiff wire through the drain nipple (after you have cleaned out the crud from it)
    4. Hold the tube/stiff wire to stop it slipping through the nipple whilst pulling it from the sunroof end. This will pull the nipple back onto the offending drain tube. You could apply some glue to the nipple where the tube pulls into it to hopefully stop it shaking out again. I didn't but will if there is a next time.
    5. Pull the tube/stiff wire back out the sunroof end.
    6. Push grommet lip back around hole in pillar
    7. Tip some test water down drain tube and watch it dribble or run out of the nipple.
    8. Dry out the carpet.
Hope this helps someone else. 5/10 minutes to do after many hours drying out the carpets and working though the other solutions.

      Hey mate,
Did you do that because when pouring water on the top, the water was draining under the car?

    • @WestfieldFreshAir
      @WestfieldFreshAir 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, that's right. But not all of it goes underneath, some drains along the sills to the rear which is why the rear carpet gets wet. Hope I've helped.
