I thought I had heard some pretty impressive performances but this leaves me speechless. I am astounded. Absolutely the best performance of this kind I have every seen or heard.
absolutely stunning
Impressive arrangement and talent to get the beautiful music Qi Zhang.
I haven't played the organ in over thirty years. I had no idea of the quality of the sound these produce now.
Thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks.
It would be impossible to get better than this. What a fantastic artist of music.
that was totally brilliantly amazing. i love you TEDtalks !
A universe of sounds at your fingertips. Great performance !
The sound changes are controlled by the row of buttons between the keyboards. Each button can store/recall almost every setting on the instrument. Changes can be sequenced (as is the case here) and/or operated manually by pushing them or using a footswitch on the main expression pedal. The main expression pedal is the right-most pedal that looks like a car gas/accelerator pedal.
Wow! She's like a whole orchestra!!! That is amazing!
An astonishing and inspiring performance.
Jaw-dropping! I had no idea this instrument existed. And to witness Qi playing a full orchestral piece on it that she also programmed in...bravissima!! Brilliant!
that was massive, that organ is a beast, and Qi Zhang is gorgeous and talented .
OH MY GOD.
How ... seriously haha. Epic control of her instrument, controlling an entire orchestra at her fingertips (conductor included!) .... the part where she does the percussion with her feet blew my mind wow. Incredible.
A stunning virtuoso performance. It is exhausting just watching her paly.
I enjoyed the music. I can't believe that it's just one person who's playing all those instruments. I have the utmost respect for that lady's skill
@Griffith101 Banks are switched automatically. The whole performance is preprogrammed, she basically fills in the blanks with melody and perhaps some percussion.
A competent organist on a pipe organ with a modern MIDI console can play it in the same style, with a MIDI sequencer switching banks, and doing some percussion-like fills. For a sequencer, these days: an iPhone with a MIDI interface will do.
Actually the sounds are controlled by the row of buttons between the keyboards. Each button can store/recall almost every setting on the instrument. Changes can be sequenced and/or operated manually by pushing them or using a footswitch on the main expression pedal.
That performance was nothing short of GREAT. I was once a artist for Yamaha when they were in this country. The HX1 was the bomb then.
I bow to you.
They often have musicians and visual artists on, its part of the draw of TED that they have both arts and sciences. I truly appreciate what Qi Zhang is doing and it is very cool.
Just incredible.
This was fantastic !!!
Great technique... and beautiful as well!!!!
STAGEA ELS-01c on TEDtalks! Great!
Remarkable sense of orchestration. BRAVA!!
u are reviving the great authenticity debate. original paintings vs prints, natural trees versus plastic trees, wild old growth nature versus restored nature
Very nice. Well done.
simply amazing!
What an instrument...
What an artist...
Amazing...
I have a hard time believing ONE PERSON could do that. Had I heard it without an accompanying video I would have assumed it was an orchestra. amazing
i think the most important question is how is her mind able to comphrehend that much music and that many melodies at once?
I'm speechless.
That was incredible beyond belief. wow.
God I love Prokofiev.
This is not what I expected when I read "organ." But damn, it's pretty awesome! Not only do her hands move crazy fast (and her feet, too), but her dynamics are outstanding.
I'm sure we all look forward to your appearance at TED with an even more jaw-dropping peformance.
I see that you well understand how best to inspire students to perform up to their full potential. After reviewing the segment that you refer to in your later post I'd actually have to agree with you in that that particular staccato bass riff is just a programed sequence that she activates by holding down a single pedal. But she obviously is actually fingering a big majority of the notes. The whole thing does still sound synthetic, but it's really quite impressive to do so in a live performance.
Brilliant!
Yes, I have the East West app and it is awesome!
very awesome
Soooo Amazing.... Stunning!
excellent performance
thanks for sharing! ^_^
fantastic performance -3 love it
that was amazing.
That's cool. It's the first person who played electrone but the best. Im speechless now
Those are preset buttons so she can change sound settings while she's playing.
Amazing, unbelievable.... WOW!
just do a search on Electone Stagea and you'll find lots more performances of this yamaha muscial instrument.
I'm not a fan of this type of music, but I appreciate her skills. Some facts on the instrument:
*Yamaha Electone ELS-01C
*Sold only in Asia
*Costs around 12,000USD
*Row of buttons between the keyboards is the Registration Memory. Each button can store/recall almost every setting on the instrument. Changes can be sequenced
*Pedals are a fully functional 20 note keyboard with initial and after touch
*There are 2 voice sections per keyboard, plus 2 solo sections, organ and k'board percussion
Best I've heard
Those foot pedals are actually a fully functional keyboard with both initial and after touch. See my other comment on this thread on the patch changes.
the instrument is called Electone Stagea from Yamaha and it's been in Japan for decades.
Check it out... it's a great instrument to play with...
i know that cos i've been playing it for a decade =D
either that or a backdrop for some other movie/adventure theme.
Interesting observation as that's exactly what many organists did before sound.
I love how this is tagged in the description as "ridiculous"
I fell in love.
I don't think many of the classical pianists like Rubenstein, Van Cliburn or many others could even do this on this symphonic keyboard instrument. This is like playing an entire symphony in your hands and your brain is the master conductor. Amazing unusual talent!
Of course they could. The fact that it has too many sounds doesn't make it more complex to play an organ. Although it really is harder than I piano, as I play it.
That is crazy. I love it.
Everyone is talking about the player, but you also have to give a lot of credit to the instrument itself for being capable of producing such sounds. Of course, it takes skill to be able to exploit its capabilities to such a degree.
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Omgosh, it's like she's a one woman orchestra. It's amazing...For those of you claiming shes not playing..you guys are really dense. You do realize there are multiple medals under the organ? You play this instrument with both your hands and your feet.
Very amazing.
I listen to soundtracks regularly, games, movies, animations...the works. Music specificly in these styles is my muze to creating my own art, be it drawing, 3d or writing.
I dig it.
Think of Diablo1,
with Qi Zhang playing in the room !
That is easily the single most incredible thing I've seen in a long time... 49 people who watched this video apparently had rather large and extremely uncomfortable sticks lodged deeply in their asses. I believe that this is the only circumstance under which someone could not enjoy this video.
WOW! That was simply Amazing.
I wonder how much one of those will set you back.
It seems like the last instrument you would ever need.
amazing
I love this!
nice !!
hitting that final boss like it's nobody's business.
It is "Ridiculous Fellows" by Prokofiev, but it's still apropos.
The performance is electrifying!
This organ will be the greatest of all the new instruments of the 21st Century.
Thad
a company like Yamaha could set up a cluster of servers on stage, and use their synthesis team (maybe the guys that did XG) to put it to creative use. something that number crunches beyond what we expect to give the performer access to or a glimpse of a future synth
wow. wasn't expecting that...
This is one woman doing what usually takes 50 people in an orchestra. I can't believe how incredible this is
An entire philharmonic orchestra in a box, played by a virtuoso. Simply amazing. I don't like the song that much, but the performance is awe inspiring.
She changes patches via a footswitch most certainly. Welcome to the wonderful world of MIDI...
wow. and i thought her YYZ rush cover was insane. i was contented only hearing that by her until now. her footwork is ridiculous.
the skills
Impressive.
WOW!
word! understanding is better than knowing! or so most THINK they know.
How!?
How does she change patches so fast?
Amazing performance.
Sent this one by PM, dont know if it got sent - browser lagged.
DuMyth - sure I know those are samples - and she does a hell of a job, i mean just look at her feet on those group selectors! interesting stuff either way
the Love for One Organ
wow ! inspirational - 5 stars...oscar wright, rome
Amazing performance :)
Magic
insane!
excellent performance!
how do those yellow flashing buttons work? (between the two keyboard layers)
quiet poignant.. very nice. Although i do have to comment upon the idea of diminishing an orchestra into a single pianistic instrument, this is still quiet amazingly wonderful and reflects the wonderful advancements in technology.
Wow..
final fantasy came to mind when hearing the first part good stuff :-)
Is anyone else remined of the introduction to 'The Odessy' by Symphony X.
thats probably why i liked it so much
coulda been for ps1 cuz snes was a bit more... 32 bit sound ykno?
Goddamnit!
Fear not, the "unit orchestra" has been around for 100 years, this version, and those made by Roland use digital sampling to great realisim, but there will always be orchestras. Pulling 96 minds together to one common goal is a great human feat.
holy crap
chaotic grace.
Absolutely AMAZING! ... stunning performance ... funny how there is an endless count of criticism to this video and not a single video response to demonstrate how well the critics do it and how 'easy', 'mechanical', 'practiced' and 'heartless' QiZhang's performace is ...
shameless hypocrites
@Crunch0r i would like to draw ur attention to 1:39 the sound of the background chelo or wtever its called (string instrument). there is sound but she is not playing it with her fingers.
and btw the quality of the ted talks have been quite dissapointing lately
I want this in the next starfox or shadow of the colossus.
.... holy crap
wow.
TED please invite Robert Fripp to talk and play???
xxo
nice
