Staying quiet after being disrespected feels so unnatural at first, but it’s the ultimate power move. It’s not about them; it’s about your peace

When I was younger when people are disrespectful or not pleasing or rude I tend to react. But at 40’s I have no words to say, I just want to keep my precious time and energy for those who are worth it! My time. My life!

I got into it at work with someone. He insulted me, I just stared at him. After a minute, I said, "Now that you threw your tantrum, would you like to talk to me like an adult". He's avoided me ever since.

This reminds me of Proverbs 15:1: 'A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.' Staying quiet can prevent unnecessary conflict and bring peace to challenging moments.

When I started reading the Bible about God and how he positioned this world that we live in today I understand the whole meaning of life because before I didn’t believe in a God but once I opened my eyes, now I can really see the world for what it is today and it’s not for us to understand because in the end this will not even matter when we die. So now I’m all about peace and happiness and living a good life with my wife my daughters and my grandchildren and good family and friends. No time for drama and dysfunctional people.

When I think about all of the times I could have avoided conflict by simply keeping my mouth shut knowing I had nothing to prove is staggering.
I found myself in a situation while going for a walk tonight. I took a moment to sit down on a park bench to reflect and I saw two people across the road looking all suspicious. One of them said "are you watching me bro"?
    I said nothing.
He said something again and I said I'm just out for a walk, getting some exercise, what's your excuse?
He and what turned out to be his partner approached me without clear intentions, so I called the cops. When I felt comfortable that they were no threat and the police weren't needed, I let them talk. Turn's out they were looking for someone who was trying to climb their fence.
So what did I learn from that situation?
Not everyone is out to get you but that's not always the case.
I probably never should've said "what's your excuse", or never said anything at all. Also realising that I probably should have never looked in their direction in the first place.
Reflecting further, it has made me realize just how important Stoicism is in a forever changing and increasingly hostile world.

I so agree with you. Thank you for sharing. I have a person close to me that always, 'gets my goat'. Example: I will mention a current event article, and before I finish, I am bombarded by debasing, demeaning tones that signify my ignorance. I feel so disrespected. This person either disrespects me in general and/or thinks way too highly of himself. I will try the Stoic approach in a more centered way. What do you think?

To all that have lived through the consistent slanderization of one's self; just pause. Reflect with the best reason for response in mind. Stash it with the process and use silence if necessary. If chosen in the form of silence, you will find freedom and bravery within. We can all use our tools wisely, I believe it is possible. Stay strong, persevere and be silently and ultimately courageous. Our inner strength is always worth protecting. Silence is my favorite virtue. Don't react, just reflect, respond.. with STRENGTH.❤🎉⚖️

Why do they think you're someone they can disrespect in the first place? because they know you are "stoic" meaning you have nothing clever to say back and you are nonthreatening. your instincts are not to fight, not flee, but to freeze. that is all. it works to keep you out of jail, so does leaning in and whispering death threats as it is one person's word against another.. insults work when the room laughs at you after something funny is said. this is good but one-sided.

@davidberes9724 I think that depends upon the challenge. I am a retired Sunday school teacher, and the challenges were many. I accepted challenges when they referred to the work. I held silent on personal challenges. I went home and did my own personal work to see if I could form a lesson , not only for myself but to keep in mind: Practice what you preach. I'm not sure if this helps in any way. Tough challenges you must have faced. Teaching the youth in any subject is challenging.
