    i'm full cambodian, first gen american. thanks for doing this. most of the time when i mention my parent's history and the khmer rouge no one seems to know what it is. my dad's walked cross country for months at a time, making three round trips barefoot through jungle and minefields to lead his family out of the country. the craziest thing i hear is that the way he was able to tell where to step was by taking into account the corpses on the ground and the blast radius- the closer to an exploded mine the safer you were, since mines had to be placed some amount apart. imagining my dad at 16 sleeping with corpses is sobering as hell.

    In the US media the Vietnamese were villianized as a result of the Vietnam war. Yet the Vietnamese wiped the Khmer Rogue out of government. If not for Vietnam they'd still be in charge. If not for the US losing the Vietnam war, and the larger reunified Vietnam invading Cambodia in response to the Khmer invading them, then the Khmer regime would have held on longer. Some Cambodian child or adult survived because of Vietnamese actions. Maybe someone here right now. Maybe even a fellow American today. Irony to an American brought up in total American cultural programming. Worse yet, knowledge that the CIA may have initially assisted the Khmer Rogue. The ideology never was Capitalism vs Communism, but a chessboard. The Khmer were a death cult. The US, French, Soviets, and Chinese influencers in the region. But the Vietnamese had just fought, a Civil War, against the US military, and a war of independence of sorts. Later they'd fight off a Chinese invasion. Communists invading Communists? Capitalists backing Death Cults that originally claimed to be Communists who were defeated by Communists? Again it was never about Communism vs Capitalism. Makes you rethink who your villains once were. Makes you think about the hidden heroes you never saw in the former villains you were told to villianize. Maybe the Vietnamese aren't the monsters our propaganda in the Vietnam era, told us they were, maybe they weren't bad people, or villains, maybe they were someone's heroes, someone who survived longer because that despicable Khmer regime was ousted. Maybe Rambo movies don't hold the same feelings they once held, and the old Vietnam movies feel less we did our best, and more why the hell were we there? It's wasn't our war, and we were wrong. The spread of Communism you say? Then why were Communists (PR China) invading Communists (Vietnam) because they responded to an attack by self proclaimed Communists in reality a death cult (Khmer). Reality is gray. Politics are muddy. Ideologies mean little to players, opportunists, and cults.

Needles to say once the atrocities that Khmer Rouge have done unfold, VN quickly sever ties with them and actually done something about it, invade Cambodia the second time and even left Cambodia with the newly raise government, wonder if American would be so nice after doing such thing.
      And please don't say stuff like "we only lost because people back home protest" You are already on the losing side before the election happened, after suffer the endless skirmishers, US soldier losing the will to fight, some even show insubordination to their officers. Vietnam and Cambodia for a thousand year don't share any border, that was under Suryavarman II, from 1128-1138, Khmer Empire at that time expanded to the North took over the land of Laos today, invade Vietnam 3 times, sometime with the help of ancient China, and Champa, and got their ass kick each time, when Champa no longer help them fight Vietnam, they invaded Champa too. In 18th century Vietnam expanded to the South and take both Champa and part of Khmer Empire. Not only it's Cambodia invaded Vietnam first, it all happened hundreds of years ago. So where's that grudge comes from? It's all Deng Xiaoping and Pol Pot's propaganda to force Cambodian against Vietnam in the past. There were 4 families in a suburb call “the World”: America - the richest and most powerful, China -the second richest and powerful, Vietnam - a poor but brave family living in a house just in front of China’s, Cambodia - a poor family who live in the right of Vietnam’s house.
    Not long ago, America intruded into Vietnam’s garden and beat his wife and son badly for some unclear reasons, Vietnam stood up and chased America out of his garden, although he got several injures.
    During that time, Cambodia told China about his will to erase his current family to free himself for a new marriage and got China support. China gave him money to buy gun and promise to keep quiet.
    While Vietnam was putting bandage on his wife’s and his own wounds from the fight with America, Cambodia quietly came over to Vietnam’s garden and stabbed Vietnam’s son who was playing there. Hearing his son’s scream desperately, Vietnam rushed out to see his son in a blood pond. He could only have enough time calling his wife to take care of the poor boy and ran followed Cambodia.
    Cambodia ran back home and locked his wife and daughter in a room, shoot one of his son in his head, beat the other son till dead, and kept hitting his wife and toddle who were tied to a chair. Vietnam was in front of Cambodia’s house knocking on the door to ask Cambodia out to talk; in reply he could only hear Cambodia’s wife and little toddle scream in dismay.
    The whole neighbourhood heard the scream. China turned his music loud pretending he could not hear anything. People from other nearby houses peered their heads out of their windows asking what’s happening? America knew Cambodia’s wife and children were in danger but because all of his hatred to Vietnam he just hoped Cambodia would kill Vietnam too. So America shouted to everybody to get back to their houses, nothing wrong.
    At this state, Vietnam decided to break into Cambodia’s window, ran through the kitchen, up to the bedroom where Cambodia’s stabbing nonstop his wife. He broke in the room, fought Cambodia to the floor, got shot in his leg but managed to tie Cambodia’s hands.
    China saw it all, he ran out in front of Cambodia’s house and shouted to all neighbours, “Vietnam intruded Cambodia, I’ll teach him a lesson”. And there he ran to Vietnam’s house with his son holding the sharpest knives that they have; they broke the door and immediately stabbed Vietnam’s injured wife and son. Vietnam’s wife bravely fought back, got many wound but managed to badly injure China. Vietnam’s wife let China and his son to withdraw and she hurried back to her son who was bleeding on the floor. On the way out, China and his son destroyed the whole Vietnam’s kitchen.
    In front of Cambodia’s house, all neighbours were drawn by America and China and were shouting at Vietnam who was inside, condemned his action as an intruder and asking him out to give his hand up. Nobody care to Vietnam’s wife and son who were begging for help just nearby. Vietnam untied Cambodia’s wife and toddle, gave them a knife to protect themselves, and then decided to go back home to take his wife and son to hospital. When Vietnam’s gone, all neighbours got in and called police to catch the already tied Cambodia. On the way Vietnam drove his car to hospital, people yelled at him for his intrusion into Cambodia’s house.
    Sometime later, Cambodia’s wife and toddle recovered, and now lived in the house with no man. China is tempted by Cambodia’s wife, they have kept flirting recently. To bribe Cambodia’s daughter, China have bought a lot of sweet for her. This naïve little girl enjoys the sweet so much that now she likes China more than anyone else. And as her memory about what happened faded away, she even starts learning Vietnam hatred from China.
    At Cambodia’s tribunal, he was the only one who faced the verdict, the one who gave him support was not named. America and other neighbours got medals for their courage acts. Vietnam’s name was never mentioned. However, in some of their accusation, Cambodia’s wife and daughter blame Vietnam for intruding into their house and ask for his compensation for their broken windows and doors. When being asked about “gratitude”, they answer “We could have been able to free ourselves without Vietnam’s intervention”There were 4 families in a suburb call “the World”: America - the richest and most powerful, China -the second richest and powerful, Vietnam - a poor but brave family living in a house just in front of China’s, Cambodia - a poor family who live in the right of Vietnam’s house.

It also worst because they are killing teachers, doctors, governors, singers......basically anyone who have some sort of educational background. They think it’s unfair that educated people (people who live in the city) are all live in the luxurious. They want to make a country with no social class so they evacuated people in the City to countryside to experience “what people in the countryside gone through”
      People have to hide their profession if they don’t want to get killed.

Anyway they were so crazy that they provoked their own collapse by attacking Vietnam. Can you imagine a small country with a small population Cambodia had 7 millions people at that time who were dying and and the small Khmer rouge army without real heavy weapons attacking a country with a real army and a much bigger population like Vietnam? It's just insane. But fortunately for us Khmer people they did it without Vietnam intervention we all would die. But we have to remember that they were totally brainwashed and low educated people. I would also mention that we can notice that some dictatorships provoke their own collapse for example even nazi Germany by attacking USSR and opening a second front because of some madness they were disconnected from the reality

China had always declared that there was no genocide at all, and Vietnam just told a fake story, using it as a cause to invade Campuchia to reunite Indochina. In my opinion, Vietnam interfered Campuchia not only because its needs of peace and security but also for humanity reasons.
    Now we see. Khmer Rough is a devil which killed so many people in vast brutal ways. And we can also see, China is a liar, a big big liar in Asia. It is (not was) because it continue to lie about their nine-dots sovereign in South China Sea. Actually, they has illegally occupied those islands by forces. They took some from South Vietnam (1974) and took some from Vietnam (1988). They shot and killed 64 Vietnamese soldiers.
    South East Asia, be careful and thoughtful with China.

      After the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia and overthrew the Khmer Rouge the US sanctioned Vietnam, urged the Chinese to support the Khmer Rouge rebels and the US itself funded and armed the Khmer Rouge rebels and for more than a decade voted yearly at the UN for the ousted Khmer Rouge to retain Cambodia's seat at the UN.

    I've been in the S-21 prison. I really wish that I could have spent more time there. It was fascinating but I could feel that it was haunted. Only 7 people made it out alive. Most people only spent a few hours before being killed. In some of the classrooms, there are thousands upon thousands of mugshots of all the people who were brought in. It's horrifying really, but it needs to be talked about. I got the chance to speak with a woman there who told me that her whole family was killed in the genocide because she went to school. Her neighbours told her that the Khmer Rouge waited for her for an hour but she hadn't come back so they killed her entire family and left their corpses in their home. She spoke as if she was completely disconnected from what had happened. I think that talking about the genocide and discussing how it affected modern Cambodia is necessary to help them heal. Great video!

Unbelievable to what ideological fanatism can lead to. I'm still horrified by that experience but it's a valuable one. Those are stories that have to be told, to warn us not to make the same mistakes. Everyone should once visit a place like that as a reminder to value what they take for granted.

Initially during the Vietnam war they came and asked for help from USSR , which saw where this was going and responded NOPE !. They went an allied themselves with China eventually. Due to growing rift between USSR and PRC , Vietnam was on the side of USSR , PRC and Khmer rouge decide to invade Vietnam at the same time this results in so called border skirmishes a massive but short term war. Khmer Rouge were fighting Vietnam with help from PRC and US and UK. Pol Pot was educated in France.

    i think it's quite interesting how remnants of the khmer rouge become a fact of everyday life here in cambodia; the s-21 prison, known colloquially as Toul Sleng, is referred to casually, as though it's nothing but another street marker - eg. "turn left at toul sleng to get to toultompong market". the minefields are just places we avoid, without much thought put to it. adults in their fifties and older will talk about the atrocities of the khmer rouge casually - eg "oh, you were sent to the broken plate commune? i was kept in phnom penh. we had enough food, but my brother in king's tiger commune starved to death." my mother is familiar with all sorts of plants and animals because she needed to be. she'll point out berries that are bitter and horrible-tasting but she had eaten anyways because she needed to stay alive. she says that they weren't allowed to touch the mangoes in the trees of the pagoda she and other young girls had stayed in, not even when they'd fallen to the ground on their own, because the soldiers would shoot them on the spot. she says that when they worked in the fields, she found insects and stored them in her clothes to eat later, when she was in private and wouldn't be accused of stealing food from the regime. and she says all of this casually, like she's reminiscing about a bad storm that'd blown over. its truly humbling how survivors of the regime just picked themselves back up and started working with all the suffering around them accepted as a part of life.

He just casually mention young soldiers and told me how at this age I could have carried a gun and not knowing how to open stuff.
      My mom on the other hand never talked abt it. Actually my mom side of the family only told us to watched all the movies and read all the books related to it. My aunt in the U.S asked me if my mom ever mentioned what she gone through and I said no. She told me to someday sit down with her and asked her what happened. When we were in Cambodia, my mom suffered from depression and she also very very very over protective of me and my brother. I know cause none of my friends parents were as protective as her. I was not allow to hang out with my friends and I was 17 at the times !! She actually was diagnosed with depression when we moved to the U.S tho. Actually her mental health improves a lot since we moved here. She start working again and so she stop worrying abt us which is great for both me and my brother. I learned this in public schools. But we only spent a day on it. There is only so much you can cram into a class. The problem with the 20th century is that we don't have enough distance from it to really see what is important. We spend more time talking about the Beatles invading America, than the Soviets invading Hungary.
      I remember getting in an argument with my history teacher because we spent twice as much time talking about how American women benefited from WWll than actually talking about the fighting in WWll.
      We will probably have to wait for all the baby boomers to die before we can get an objective view of the late 20th century.

    I've been to Cambodia this year and our tour guide told us about his survival story on the way to Siem Reap. He was originally from Pnom Phen and about 6 when the Khmer Rouge came to power. His family of 17 was split up and brought to different labour camps. He said he was in a child labour camp with 100 other children. They had 4kg of rice per day, which gave each kid 4 spoons of rice a day. He considered himself lucky if he was able to kill and eat a snake when no one was watching, but he knew he risked his life when he did. He also told us that one day a guard caught some kids and him climbing a tree, trying to eat the very hard, not yet ripe fruits. He was told to come down and bring a fruit, and he was so happy. But the guard smashed it on his head until it broke, more than 40 times. He blacked out and still has pain there today.
    Later his older brother (then 16) was caught climbing a palm tree to drink the water in the leafs. He and his two immidiately younger brothers were brought to the main guard at the town centre, and then sent to "school", which meant killed with iron rods. The children had to dig graves and bury them and all the other dead children each morning. He cried when he told us that so many mothers would never know what happened to their beloved daughters and sons.
    The tour guide said that, when the regime fell, he was malnourished and disorientated and didn't know where anyone from his family was or if they were even still alive. He stumbled along the road for three days, approx. 70 miles and by sheer coincidence spottet his mother.
    They lost 6 members of their family in 3 years and 8 months, his father, his three oldest brothers (he told us the names and then calculated real quick for us how old they would have been now) and two younger sisters who died of malnourishment.
    It was hard to look him in the eyes afterwards. I work with very very traumatised people, think of former child prostitutes or girls that were sold in child pron rings. But nothing came close to what I heard our guide told us that day and nothing shook me to the core like his story.

    English below. Tiếng Việt ở trên.
    From the nearly-completed genocide of the Cambodian people at the hands of the heinous Pol Pot clique under direction and orchestration by China’s Expansionist Rulers (and urged on and supported by the US Administration to exact revenge on Vietnam), thinking of the barbaric genocide, physical and cultural, now being committed on the Uyghur people by China’s Expansionist Rulers ....
    ===============
    This is about the heinous genocide that's being perpetrated on the hapless Uyghur people in Xin-Jiang, China (East Turkestan before that country was invaded, occupied and renamed by China's expansionist Rulers)
    ===============
    # Đây nói về nạn Diệt chủng người Campuchia và người Duy Ngô Nhĩ (Uyghurs) ở Tân Cương, TQ, do Bành trướng Trung Quốc chỉ đạo, gây ra.
    # Năm 1975 - 1978, Bành trướng Trung Quốc điều khiển chỉ đạo bọn Diệt chủng Pôn Pốt .... (và Chính quyền Mỹ xúi giục giúp đở để trả thù Việt Nam)
    # trong nước thì gây nạn Diệt chủng khủng khiếp lên Nhân dân Campuchia để dọn sạch Campuchia, sẵn sàng đón Cố vấn, rồi tới Lính (khi Pôn Pốt thua Việt Nam, phải kêu gọi Bành trướng Trung Quốc vô giúp), và sau đó là Công nhân, Dân thường Trung Quốc, vô tràn ngập biến Campuchia thành 1 tỉnh TQ nữa như Tân Cương;
    # ngoài nước thì tiến đánh Việt Nam và gây ra những tội ác man rợ lên Đồng bào VN ta.
    ===============
    Beside the barbaric Genocide committed on the Cambodian people during 1975 - 1978 to wipe Cambodia clean of Cambodians and ready Cambodia for Deng_XiaoPing-Mao_ZeDong's Chinese advisers, then troops, then colonizers, to flood in, there is another no-less barbaric Genocide that has been committed on the Uyghur people, and is now continuing; and the Culprits are the same: The boundlessly greedy, ruthless, brutal, expansionist Rulers of China.
    ===============
    # Tội nghiệp người Duy Ngô Nhĩ (Uyghurs). Giống như người Tây Tạng, họ bị Giới Cầm Quyền Bành trướng Trung Quốc tiến hành Diệt chủng vừa tinh vi vừa thâm độc tàn khốc.
    # Họ bị Diệt chủng vừa con người vừa văn hóa.
    # Cộng đồng Thế giới phải giúp họ trước khi họ bị tiêu diệt hoàn toàn; và phải LÀM GẤP.
    # Nga ở sát bên là có thể giúp tốt nhất.
    # Mỹ, Nhật, Đức, Anh, Pháp, Canađa, Turkey, ... và Cộng đồng Quốc tế phải cộng tác với Nga để giúp cứu người Duy Ngô Nhĩ (Uyghurs) thoát nạn Diệt chủng nầy, thay vì chống phá, kèn cựa với Nga.
    # Xin nhắc lại: Phải LÀM GẤP.
    ===============
    Poor Uighurs (Uyghurs). Like the Tibetans, a very cunning and extremely vicious genocide is being committed on them by China's ever greedy, ruthless, brutal and expansionist Rulers.
    # They are subjected to a genocide, both physically and culturally.
    # The World Community must help them before they are completely exterminated; and QUICKLY
    # Next-door Russia can help best.
    # The US, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, France, Canada, Turkey, ... and the International Community must cooperate with Russia to help the Uyghurs escape this Genocide, instead of opposing, stirring up trouble and causing difficulty for Russia.
    # Repeat: World MUST HURRY, before the Uyghurs are gone.
    ===============
    The Uyghur people is being subjected to a systematic, ruthless, extremely cunning and vicious genocide by China's ever greedy expansionist rulers. The Uyghurs are about to be exterminated, physically and culturally, unless the World helps them, QUICKLY.

    "For a nation so associated with the trauma of the past, it is hard to find people here who don't focus on the promise of the future." Gorgeous.
    We never really learn about this in schools, it's one of those things you see mentioned in a book or a television show, but you never really LEARN, it's just buried alive and forgotten, but you help us to see and learn.
    You handle the stories with such care and precision, and despite all this you still have a touch of self-deprication that ties you back to Earth. You get people to THINK, and I think that's what we need most in the world right now, humans who think with their own hearts and brains.
    Thank you for telling these stories, thank you for being such a wonderful storyteller, and I can't wait to see more glimpses of the rare stories of Earth.
    I know that these comments often get lost in the windstorm of cyberspace text, but I hope you see this one, and I hope it makes your day a little brighter, and your goal a little clearer. Thank you again, both for the videos and for listening to the words of a schoolgirl.
    I'll be watching.

    I ReALLY enjoy this being a fairly small channel, and I hope it stays that way. Even though it might not be good for the creators (thank you for giving us great content!), it's certainly good for everybody else. We have enough of these channels pulling in three or four million views on videos with 25.000 + comments. It's just not enjoyable being a part of such a large community. In a smaller community, people can get their voices heard and participate on a whole new level, and that's worth SO MUCH MORE than millions of views. You are doing everything right, and I really enjoy the show! Have a good day, viewers and creators :)

    You forgot to mention
    Vietnam, of course, continued to brand itself the liberator of the Camobidian, and stressed continuously that at the time of the genocide, the whole world but Vietnam turned a blind eye to what happened.
    However, nowadays the Cambodian government is ran by whatever left of that Pol Pot, and the country is being educated that Vietnam was an invader just like the rest. They did not even mention their offensive.
    So even right now there s a propaganda war, where Vietnam keeps digging up survivors to tell that Vietnam was a liberator, and Cambodia keeps digging up China and UN's proofs that Vietnam was an invader.

      @@thefirstofitskind895 Wikipedia lists the pronunciation as [kʰmae] and I don't think the [ae] sound occurs English, though it's pretty close to the "i" sound. I'd be willing to bet the "er" spelling comes from the Brits: In British English, "r" isn't pronounced at the end of words and instead modifies the Vowel before it, so British colonialists would hear strange vowels sounds and use "r" to represent this. I know this is how "Burma" ended with an r in the name despite there not being an r sound in there.

    You're right there has been almost nobody held responsible for the horrors and most former Khmer Rouge remain living peacefully and more often than not with privileges still. I've spent a lot of time in Cambodia a few years ago and know the place and people well. A Khmer hotel owner and well connected older woman there whom I know was a school teacher who somehow survived. Her obvious wealth and connections today make clear why that it. The UN history in Cambodia is atrocious too. They are known for having debauched so many of the young girls there's even a standing display depicting this at a village museum in Siem Reap.

We were brought to the Canada House and were to be adopted. I also escaped being put on a plane that crashed called Operation Babylift. I was lucky that last min a Canadian Airforce plane offered to take anyone going to Canada on his plane the next day. And me and the 65 Cambodian babies and our Canadian nurses escaped being killed on that plane crash. I grew up in Canada... arrived in Montreal April 6th 1975 and was all over the newspapers with my parents...

    I think the most interesting part about genocide is how readily (mostly) young men/soldiers everywhere are willing to inflict pain, suffering and death to people they don't know under the excuse of doing what's right. It happens everywhere and in any time in the history of humanity, groups of young men of fighting age bring horribly violent. It's the awful nature of our species. We're cursed 😐

      @@garyjohnstone6422 gary, LOL your comment is so ironic. You're so ignorant, you don't seem to realize violent crime far predates any notion of communism. 🤔

    # Wish everyone view again the bloody and chaotic, hellish scenes everywhere in Cambodia's pre-1975, due to American bombing and overthrowing of Norodom Sihanouk (America's "side show"). Then view again the Pol Pot's years with deserted cities, forced march, execution fields, Tuol Sleng's photos of children, women and men, with their terrified eyes, waiting to be tortured and executed.
    # Then view the scenes of today's Cambodia bursting with life.
    # Then pause a little and honestly, impartially ask: "Thanks to whom for this revival?"

    I dont know whats taken me so long, but my parents are from both Cambodia and Vietnam and survived what happened there. We live peacefully in Canada but I am just starting to learn about the history and what has happened to them, they must have seen some crazy shit , I never appreciated this or took it seriously. This was wrong way of thinking. They never talk about it, but I know atleast 1 of my parents have trauma from this but i dont know why i never thought about it or connected it. I can only be a better son from now on. Also I feel more pride and proudness of my parents from the bottom of my heart now knowing this is the adversity they dealt with to get me to be a succcesful individual in the western world today. i just shed tears i have never shed in my whole entire life. Thanks for this amazing video and I am happy I started this journey to understand my own families history
