I'm based in NZ, just commenting to assist others off this brilliant idea! I found it hard to find the rings, but instead used a zinc coated 12mm D shackle. My partner goes camping q lot so makes the hammock a bit more versatile!!

I wish I knew one. Sadly, the options are sort of limited for that quantity. We are planning on taking ours down when we aren't using it.

Thank you. Looking yo replicate this with thicker jute rope (10mm maybe 14mm). It is for a fixed 3 sided wooden wall, so I won't be needing the two rings but rather many eye screws of a similar spacing.
My question, how long do I need to make my cord cuts for an overall space of 60"x98"? This is the best video I have found for what design I'm looking for. Thank you for the input
Dang - that sounds super cool!!! Yours would be 10" longer than the one in the video - but with your cord being thicker, it may cinch up the length more with larger knots. I guess I would try to add at least 2' to the length?? What was your guess?
@@DIYOnTheHouse I have since consulted my wife and we decided to replicate your design with macramé (jute much less comfortable).
Two follow-up questions though (PLEASE!):
1) for a sun exposed outdoor application at my side and supporting: is 4mm cord prudent of not a significant change
2) will braided macramé last longer or function much differently in application and construction?

Have you ever considered using paracord for this hammock? I loved the tutorial and have a ton of paracord around but don’t want to cut it up if you think it wouldn’t work.
Yes it would work!!! It takes a ton of cording - but if you have the paracord - it would look great!

your design and viedo are absolutely wonderful. 2 questions: is the macrame cord cotton or is it a mix of cotton and polyester or nylon? or something else completely. I am new to macrame and I cannot find the amazon link below you refer to (maybe because I live in South Africa). If I double the amount of cords in between each pair of drill holes on the wooden dowel presumably it will make the weave tighter?( obviously a lot more cord required!) I love love love it and can't wait to start the project. My mum (91) is coming to stay and I need a huge project. Thank you so very much

You can certainly add more holes - just be careful to not weaken the rod with too many holes. Let me know if you have more questions -- it was a great project!
I was looking for a 'sling' with pulleys to hoist my Thule cargo box up to the garage roof, and stumbled across this video. I think this would work great with a few modifications in the center of each side to keep the cargo box from slipping while using the pulleys. I would love some suggestions from everyone! Thx

The only suggestion I would make is to fashion an actual clew on the ends- a clew is separate from the hammock, just for hanging purposes, and works out quite nicely.

Your video helped so much, thank you! I have a suggestion that might help improve your stand. I noticed that the bar was wobbling, and you were having slight trouble balancing the bar while making the first knots at the start of your video. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to drill one large hook on both ends of the vertical pipe at the desired length to reach 22" to place the bar on so you'll have a quick and good measurement every time while you work? Maybe have the hooks at a certain angle so the bar won't move up or drop down, about 45 degrees. Ish. I hope I described it alright and that it makes it easier for you.

Check out Sailrite's video on how to make a hammock, the ring hook portion might be helpful to you when making your hammock. I love your main portion of your hammock but like the hanger section of Sailrite's hammock.

My guess is you would just have to make it wider a few inches. Beefing up the rod and ring would be the most important thing. Let me know what you come up with!!

I am only guessing, but since the mm is effecting the width, the length wouldn't be effected. Maybe consider seeing what less strands/holes on the wood dowel would make. Good question. If you come up with an answer, let us know!

We didn't - but that would be a good option! We take ours inside when we are not using it.

Hi there! Great video, thank you! One question...you have said that 1100ft of cord is required, but only require 30ft for 20 cords... which is only 600ft? Am I missing something here? I measure in metres, so want to ensure I have it right before I snippy snippy!! :)
Also understand there is cord required for the hitching on the end, and the webbing too - but you would definitely not need 500ft for that??
Then you will need to cut 18 cords, 28 feet long. These ones wrap around the rod and get wove into the hammock. Watch at minute 9:19 on the video. Let me know if you have any more questions! Enjoy!

The one we used was 38 mm - I would think that 18mm would be too weak, I would suggest something a little larger.

Do you use a quick connect type of link to connect the chain to the hammock ring ?
We used an S Hook to hook from the ring on the hammock to the chain on the stand.
I actually mean , What is used to hang the Hammock bed to the hammock stand ?
@@teradianne8273 It think we are talking about the same thing. On the hammock is the 2" ring. On the hammock stand is a heavy duty chain. Between the two we use an 'S' Hook. There are several options to use in that spot - but the S hook works good.

How much did it cost you to make this? How much total rope did you use and how did you decide which kind of cord to use? How long does your hammock typically last? Do you leave it outside or bring it in? Also what kind of wood do you use? I was curious if I could make it out if a tree branch….? They aren’t exactly straight but I like the organic ness of the tree branch and rustic. I noticed some people do a weave after the metal rings. Is that necessary?
It probably cost around $50 to make. We take it inside when we are not using it, so it should last a long time. You could do a tree branch as long as you can get holes drilled through it, and then you could adjust your cords to make them even with the curving of the branch. It is really a super fun project!!

The rings are rated to 200 lbs. If you can find heavier rings - the string portion can hold a bunch!

Where did you get the wooden closet rods?
We got ours at Home Depot, it's in the department where the base board is. It's closet rod and you pay per foot.

Going to try to use a paper clip instead of the floral wire since I have a paper clip, but no floral wire. I used the old hardware and wood from my husband's torn hammock. The holes are single, not double, so my square knot pulls through the wood dowel holes. Is there any way to fix this? Is there such a thing as a double square knot or should I use a different knot? This must be a very loose braid because I didn't have enough cord left over at the end to pull up to the other ring. The measurements from one end to the other should be 133" not 107". 44" plus 89" equals 133". Trying to figure out lengths of rope for my husband's hammock that will measure 36" on each end, 90" for hammock. 72" + 90" = 162" but cannot figure out just exactly how long to cut the rope. I tried 33' per rope but not sure this will be enough, especially for the braiding.
Have you tried doing 2 knots to keep them going through the holes? How are you doing on your measurements? That is always a tricky things on these projects.
@@DIYOnTheHouse Paper clip worked. I added 3 feet to my lengths for longer hammock. I've modified a great deal, because I used my husband's old hammock hardware. It was wider and he wanted it longer. Next one will be for me, so I'll follow directions more closely.

Not sure of capacity, You could make one out of clothes line rope. It would be strong enough.

Great question! I would say 1 hour to cut string, 1 hour to get wood cut and drilled, 1 hour to get the strings through the rod, and then 6 hours of doing the macrame. So maybe 9 - 10 hours?? But honestly, it is worth it, they turned out great!!

I probably would stick with one. The rings are rated to 200 lbs - it would really hurt if those broke!
You can definitely find higher rated rings at Lowes etc, or you can find online. Worth the money for sure. Id go for 600 lb+ rating for 2 people even for skinny people. Because safe is better than broken or dead.
My partner and I could fit on the hammock at opposite ends. Unfortunately there was too much pressure on the wooden Dowling, my partner reached back to hold it and it snapped at a drill hole 😪. An awesome hammock but only lasted us five minutes!

@@DIYOnTheHouse No-one was hurt, thank you :) I think thanks to your experimenting and such, the knots are super strong! Just gave us a fright to hear a snap! My partner is fixing it by removing the drilled wood, and adding sturdy sticks through the rope without the holes right the way through it. We think this has taken the strength out of them. Also, we have pine dowling here, which isn't as strong as our native timber, but still expensive to buy as rounded sticks!
Does anyone know what the weight limit might be? I 6'6" and 270 so I wouldn't want to make one and then break it hahaha
I would hate it to break too!! I think my concern is the ring - the cording would just wear over time -- I would find heavy duty hardware.
