  • A fifteen minute video, 60 Years on the "Farm 40" Longleaf pine forest management for the private landowner, was filmed and produced during the summer and fall of 2008. The focus of this video to educate small private landowners in longleaf pine management on their property using lessons learned from research and demonstration on the USDA Forest Service's Escambia Experimental Forest (EEF) as a basis. The EEF is a 3,000 acre tract in Brewton, AL on private land owned by T.R. Miller Mill Company. The forest was established in 1947 on property leased to the Forest Service as a field laboratory to examine problems associated with longleaf pine management, and demonstrate solutions to private landowners.

Thinned lob have some wind risk, until trunk thickens. As longleaf is taller, I wonder if shelterwood sees more of this risk. Or perhaps, smaller patchwork of like-aged longleaf can limit wind stress(?).

You can't honestly say the chemical application has no effect on wildlife on these sites.

The hardwood takeover without chemical treatment outweighs the risks

It’s the human population, not the tree population, that is wiping out ecosystems.
