Giving iPod the Respect Apple Didn’t

  • Last year Apple unceremoniously killed the iPod brand with a brief press release. Finding this to be an unfitting end to a device that changed the world, I decided to take matters into my own hands and give iPod the respect it deserves.

    I’ve got a late 2006 5th gen slim with a classic faceplate and a 3,000mah battery. It also has 256gb storage (1 sd card, I’m not sure why you’d use the quad for low capacity when the solo is cheaper and easier) and taptic. Really it’s to a point where it could be a modern product, the specs are more than enough for my everyday use. BTW, the scroll wheel is an issue with replacements, I’ve had a few with this issue. You’re better off buying refurbished ones that put new plastic on the old pcb.
    The only thing I’d say it’s missing is the diymod. Maybe wireless charging, but I hardly ever have to charge it anyways.
    You can retheme rockbox to look just like the stock software, and tons of other stuff. There’s hundreds of themes, I can’t imagine not using rockbox with your flac files just because the default theme is bad.

    I miss turning my iPod to the side and seeing those cover arts as I choose a song to listen to

    I've always had a local music collection. Services like Pandora and Spotify just facilitate discovery. I'm a singles listener though, and I think that's what a lot of music streaming is geared towards.

    Good shit brother. This was very zen and very respectful. Goodnight, iPod.

    I do love retrofitting older tech to more modern standards and/or compatibilities. my car is from 2005, so it's from that awkward phase where bluetooth or aux input weren't common but cassette decks were rare to find, and therefore doesn't have any native way to interact with pretty much anything but a CD. I installed a new head unit that allows for android auto or carplay and it's really quite a big quality of life improvement. sure it looks like a hacked-together mess but having a GPS and streaming music is pretty nice.
    in a similar vein, I've seen people add wireless charging coils to Nintendo Switches, using bluetooth dongles for ancient headphones, and then there's the wealth of upgrades available for Gameboys. hell even cfw for the PS3 and Vita probably count as adapting them to the current age. there's some cool projects to be done in this retrofitting space and I'm glad people are interested in maintaining, repairing, or improving what they already have (or more likely giving life to something they bought second-hand but I digress).

    Cool video! I love my iPod, thank you for doing it justice.
    FYI, Rockbox is very themable. There are themes like iRB_Video/Classic for imitating the original SW; and iRB_Modern/Interpod for an interface closer to the modern Apple Music app. The only thing that really took getting used to is the database export/imports and the clickwheel changes-- but I got used to them pretty fast. Plus, no iTunes is needed; you can load FLACs onto it, as if it were a USB drive.

    Very well done video! I also rebuilt my own upgraded iPod from EOE, though I went for a less traditional transparent front and black backing. I actually had the same issues with backplate screw tolerances and my bottom plastic charging point bracket is now only held in by the other components pressing against it. The iPod is also great device for listening to music while working since it doesn’t have all the distractions of a cell phone.

      thank you! funny enough, the 30-pin bracket was the one i was able to force the screws in lol

    Dude if your reading this if you create the database for the ipod just once it will do the rest for you and if you go to database its like browsing your regular ipod for albums artists and playlists if you made any.

    • @tzukima

      are you talking about rockbox?

    • @kennethloung3422
      @kennethloung3422 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tzukima yeah for rockbox. I use it all the time cause I don't want to go through itunes. I like how I can keep everything organized without it. You just need to rebuild the database once unless you add more music again. Also it acts like a media controller when plugged in to your PC so the click wheel is the volume control and the rest you know. I watched a lot of dankpods so he go me back into using one and rockbox has been really useful for avoiding iTunes.
