I am a 66 year old ASE and Ford master technician. I don’t think I have ever, and I mean, ever, heard a turbo charger explained the way that you did. Excellent job!
While I know you prefer to show your ability to salvage these old components, i think this was a good reminder that not every part is always going to be repairable. Hopefully better luck on the next one!
I agree. Also I like it because there are times when it is better not to rebuild a very bad part. Sometimes you find a better core, sometimes you buy new. Avoid excess risk of early failure.
Being a retired owner operator trucking guy, we all understand replacing turbos at least I do. The presentation of process on this was simply excellent. The affiliation with Jon @ FarmCraft101 is awesome. TH-cam and content creators like you guys get the bigger part of my recreational time, it's so good. Thank all of you guys for sharing your talents.
It would be great if all traders did what you guys at Area Diesel do, Such a pleasure to watch for the detail given regarding the in's and out's. Great job done by you guys! Much appriceated.
Why did I watch this video? I do not own or operate large diesel-powered equipment. But I was brought in by your man's clearly enunciated presentation on (1) the difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger, (2) how a turbo works, (3) what was needed for a repair, (4) why a repair was not possible, and (5) how the problem would be best resolved. I was impressed at your man's knowledge of the subject and (and this is a biggie) his integrity when he explained why replacement was impossible or undesirable. The presentation of the final solution proposed was comprehensive and the reasons for the pricings easy to understand. I liked the acknowledgement that the pricings might cause alarm in some minds but the explanations of them were clear and reasonable. If I was near Area Diesel Service and looking for the sort of services they offer, I would go to them with confidence that I would receive good treatment, good results and the level of courtesy I have come to expect from many US citizens.
One of the few points of pride in our state of Illinois. ADS is just the best of the best. They've always come through on pulling projects and they will nearly always get you out of a bind, one way or another. Folks you can count on, for sure. On top of it.....actually telling people PRICES!!!!!! That is unheard of and is a blessing for all of us to see. Honestly, $1600 is NOT BAD for that manifold!!! Best part, ADS will stand behind ALL of it!! Sending thanks from up in Aurora!!
John from Farmcraft101 is an incredible guy and you guys are amazing for supporting him! Thank you! But have you SEEN large Marge? I think before you ship those parts you need to bang them up a bit, add a touch of rust and be sure to randomly change the size of a few of the bolts... Otherwise it just won't look right... Thanks again and all the best from California! 🧡
That was the best presentation for your company that you could have possibly made. I do know that almost every youtuber that does diesel repair refers to you, so that in itself is worth a lots. Thanks for the video. It was very informative.
This must be the best vid I have watched explaining how a turbo works, explanation of the various components and their functions and potential issues/symptons. Clear precise and straight to the point.
Before I start giving compliments you should know -- I don't fix heavy machinery. I have used some and I am thinking about buying a basket case skid loader, but I am not a qualified reviewer. I watched this because I was watching FarmCraft101 and I am curious about all mechanical things. That said, this guy (didn't catch his name) is VERY good at describing technical details. I sort of knew hat a Turbo-Charger was before this video, but I have never seen it described so clearly. I spend my years describing technical stuff to other people. I have done that for about 30 years. But I am not as good as this man at presenting the details. He gave just enough info to teach me without drowning me in pedantic details. This is a great video. Thank you!
I'm an IT dude in Manhattan, doing building maintenance as a purgatory job. I have to say that ADS is legit, diesel moves the world and these folks are the real deal. Learned a ton, and I have 100s of hours of Diesel Creek, with a little KT3406E, under my belt.
Large Marge clip tickled my funny bone. Good one.👍 Jon bought that thing knowing it was hammered. So he knew the backend cost was going to be extensive. Overall, the entires series on this excavator has been an intriguing testament of determination and adaptability. Very educational.
Hands down the most outstanding description I've ever heard! BTW, this is one of the rare times outside of my former years as a Turbofan Test Engineer for Lockheed and Rolls-Royce that I've heard the term "labyrinth seal". We used them in the Trent series turbofan jet engines.
I can’t wait for the Install video of all of these New parts & just think HOW MUCH BETTER Large Marge is going to sound & operate with a New Turbo & exhaust !! Woo-Hoo !!
What a great explanation of how a turbo works, tearing it down, looking at the problems and how to solve them. I love tractor pulling and am fascinated by how many turbos can be put on an engine. I seen three but heard of four! And they're all just air stuffers! I've seen them glowing red from the heat. It's amazing they stay together!
The price for all of that was alot cheaper than I thought it would be, I guessed around $5k to $6k for all that (I was surprised the manifold was more expensive than the turbo).
I want to thank you guys for doing good work for John as I've been watching him for a long time, and he has parsed y'all in the past for the work you've done for him. He is a hard working man and doesn't need some incompetent hack making his job unnecessarily difficult trouble shooting and backtracking on work that was supposed to already done. So, if I lived close and needed your services, I would not hesitate using your services, because he has prasad the work you have done for him. kootoes to guys.
An excellent description of the function and design details of a turbocharger. Can't wait to see all these quality parts fitted back to Large Marge. You're right about Jon's channel at FarmCraft101, he sure has some interesting projects.
Large Marge should be feeling better after the new heart and new lungs. The rest of the engine was in good shape, so hopefully, everything you have done will make it run like new again. Great job, ADS.
I have dealt with heavy equipment for a long time in and around Michigan. That price for the material and work you have done is VERY good. I would gladly work with you folks anytime if I wasn't retired to my own little farm. Nice work and I loved the paint job on the fuel delivery sys.
What a brilliant explanation of the turbo system and components. Although I kind of knew how it works, now I really know how it works and relative periferal influences. Absolutely loved the video. Thank you
As a Ase Toyota and Ford Master Tech I can't say I have ever heard anyone explain turbos Better then you guys Nice work as always good video 27:34 @Area Diesel Service
Oh no! It's too bad that the turbo was too worn to reuse. But Jon is good at replacing new parts. He is so happy with ya'll. He says it all the time. You did an excellent job of explaining things so this old girl can understand. Excellent video!
Wow great job ADS, great job explaining how turbos work for those that don’t know anything about them and great job taking care of Farmer John and what a sweet deal for John and Large Marge on the new parts, when I need “Stuff” for my farm junk I will reach out to you guys, keep up the good work and I’ll keep watching!
For a complete lung replacement, I reckon that is pretty good. Australian price would be not available. Buy it in from abroad. Twenty middlemen, plus shipping, guarantee over $5000. If anyone could even be bothered to try to find it. Customer service is not big in Australia. The customer is usually viewed as a work inconvenience.
Great job finding all the parts for Jon. Love both channels really like the Collabs you guys do think Jon is the 3rd or 4 one you guys work with. Keep up the great work
Appreciate the thorough teardown and explanation of why that old KKK turbo is not rebuildable. It's clearly time for a new turbo. Thanks for being reliable problem solvers. I'm sure Jon appreciates the 'nearly bolt-on" solution despite the serious cost hit.
Excellent, EXCELLENT video. Your smooth, concise explanation makes the whole turbocharger process understandable. And, yes, I'll "tell 'em Large Marge sent" me. 😆😆😆 Ah-hahaha-ha
Awesome show this morning ,this is what you can expect when you get a bargain on a old piece of equipment you guys are the best , at least Jon has a solution for the problem with Large Marge and in reality I thought the price from Area Diesel service was down right reasonable considering it's all new from the exhaust manifold out .
I think Large Marge will be renamed to fast Marge or Clean Breathing Marge after fitting new lungs and exhaust...very well explained and edited. Great episode...cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘
Good job Guys, at a good price, one cant make do and mend on Diesel Injection Systems, and Turbo Charger Systems. Thank you for posting. All the best from the U.K.
Wow! What a great video! Love your narration… informative and funny! Prices look great too… I’m going thru another turbo project on my Cummins…. Will check you out for sure!
Very good explanation about turbocharging. Also, I think the best solution given the condition of Jon's turbo. I just hope his engine can live up to it.
I know when I first started watching I thought it would be boring. Now I am glad I stayed! Very informative and to the point. Keep up the good work! I see a video and I am ready to watch 😊😊😊 I thought I knew a lot. I have learned a lot on every video. Keep up the awesome work! Thank you ❤😊😊
I've been involved in the steam turbine generator business for almost 50 years. The folks I received my training from also pronounced "turbine" like you do. I've always pronounced that way also. Most often, the folks outside the industry are the ones that want to correct your pronunciation. In reality, I think both pronunciations are correct. I prefer the way you do it, that's how I learned from GE. Great job on Jon's "Large Marge" chapter 2.
Best video ADS ever came out with. Keep up with this format! Just as a request, film in 4k if you can. Always small parts that can get a better pic! Great job as always ADS.
On the plus side, in the last 40 years Turbochargers have improved very significantly and have better compressor efficiency. I updated the OEM, original Turbo on a TD70 Volvo truck engine, from its original T04 Garret to a H1E and boost under full throttle went from 14psi to 20psi and the spool up is much better.
I’m not sure if anyone else pointed this out but…Turban is the head cover worn mostly by Muslins while turbine is what you guys work on. So the pronunciation is not the same. Turbochargers have turbines which would be pronounced the same as “tines”on a male whitetail deer. Sorry if I sound a bit of a stickler. PS: I really like what you boys do to get my TH-cam guys back up and working again. 👍
Compared to my Mustang stuff, this solution is a lot less money. I was expecting more. I was pondering it pushing 5k. Nice try on the salvage, I doubt many would have tried that hard. Good work guys!
I am a 66 year old ASE and Ford master technician. I don’t think I have ever, and I mean, ever, heard a turbo charger explained the way that you did. Excellent job!
Jeremy Clarkson years ago had an explanation, Exhaust gasses go in, witchcraft happens, and you go faster.
Appreciate the kind words.
I need another coffee ... the first time I read "I am a 66 year old ARSE master technician". Got a pretty good chuckle out of me.
Same, only 68 years old, now retired. I worked at 3 different Ford dealerships in Southern California, my last one after I completed my 4-year degree.
Great explanation and a very professional service.
That is by far the best solution as it will be problem free for as long as Jon has the Excavator
We agree!
Great service you guys provide for you customers. And all that for $3900? That's a great deal.
Well, this part will be problem free.
WOW, did John get a mega bargain there for quality parts, well Done Area Diesel.
Yes I agree - that was a great deal!
Figured turbo would of been several k alone. Great price imo.
I was surprised the manifold came out more expensive.
I'm gonna date myself here. 1:56, flashback to Crocodile Dundee, "That's a knife" 😆 Well done!
Being a retired owner operator trucking guy, we all understand replacing turbos at least I do. The presentation of process on this was simply excellent. The affiliation with Jon @ FarmCraft101

Great job done by you guys! Much appriceated.
Our pleasure!
Really reasonable price ( I thought at least $5000)...Another really informative and well photographed video!
Thanks for the kind words!
Your turbo crash course could be a standalone video! A "diesel 101" series would be a great resource.
Now that’s a knife
That, was a comment generator, some also have to comment. 😂

I really enjoyed the theory class on turbos!!
Glad to hear it!

Large Marge clip tickled my funny bone. Good one.👍

Great solution to a customers problem. I’m sure Jon will be happy. Really enjoy both channels. Great viewing..🇦🇺🍺🍺

Also found between pistons in two stroke motorcycles. In various complexities.
Wow, thanks!
I can’t wait for the Install video of all of these New parts & just think HOW MUCH BETTER Large Marge is going to sound & operate with a New Turbo & exhaust !! Woo-Hoo !!
Never seen such simple yet complete explanation about turbochargers
I am a retired heavy truck man who dealt ready mix equipment and enjoyed your time and explanation of what you folks did to fix Large Marge.
Thorough and clear amidst iron clad customer service!!! Can’t beat that with a dead turbo!!!
I'm impressed. When I saw all that ironmongery on the table, my first guess was $10-12k. I think you provided great value there!
This is a man that knows what he is talking about. It's always great to see people that are experts in their craft!
The price for all of that was alot cheaper than I thought it would be, I guessed around $5k to $6k for all that (I was surprised the manifold was more expensive than the turbo).
That’s a great one, thanks and take us along on any repairs. Very informative and educational.
I seldom see such a clear, and concise and intelligent presentation.
I want to thank you guys for doing good work for John as I've been watching him for a long time, and he has parsed y'all in the past for the work you've done for him. This was the most informative video. Super interesting! Thank you for the lesson.
Jon is going to LOVE replacing his exhaust manifold.
Great work guys. Good to see a business that really helps the customer out.
An excellent description of the function and design details of a turbocharger. Can't wait to see all these quality parts fitted back to Large Marge. You're right about Jon's channel at FarmCraft101, he sure has some interesting projects.
Great job guys. We can tell you take pride in your work. It shows. We know who we will call when we need diesel work.
Love to see this! Awesome stuff! Not just walking away but fixing it and following up. Great stuff.
Large Marge should be feeling better after the new heart and new lungs. The rest of the engine was in good shape, so hopefully, everything you have done will make it run like new again. Great job, ADS.

I appreciated your explanations of a Turbo Charger and their inner workings. I like that kind of talk. Thank You.
Our pleasure!
Really a very good explanation of how a turbo works. Even a non mechanic like me now understands the concept.
Large Marge is gonna be a happy camper!!! Well done!
"You get what you pay for." has never been truer. Harsh, but so true. So is life, aitn't it.
That turbo charger definitely exceeded it's designed life expectancy. Great video thumbs up.
Thanks 👍
Wow great job ADS, great job explaining how turbos work for those that don’t know anything about them and great job taking care of Farmer John and what a sweet deal for John and Large Marge on the new parts, when I need “Stuff” for my farm junk I will reach out to you guys, keep up the good work and I’ll keep watching!

Great job finding all the parts for Jon. Love both channels really like the Collabs you guys do think Jon is the 3rd or 4 one you guys work with. Keep up the great work
Appreciate your concise explanation and good English usage. Good job.
Very interesting, well presented video. Highly informative. Good combination with John's videos. Direct and to the point.

Anyone that comes to y'all for help are in good hands. Fact
Very cool to watch! Thanks ADS, you guys have been a godsend for so many of these difficult old projects on YT and that's really cool.
You do great video Cheers Ian
Wow! What a great video! Love your narration… informative and funny! Prices look great too… I’m going thru another turbo project on my Cummins…. Will check you out for sure!
This should make Large Marge and Jon very happy.
Great job on making an Informative Video!
Jon made a great decision on trusting Y'all to get "Large Marge" back in Good running condition!
Awesome channel poor John large Marge its a money pit even with you boys helping him out 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊😊
Very impressed with your service and honesty. Thank you for the videos.

You guys are the masters of your universe. Well explained!
Another great repair try but excellent job sourcing parts!!
Very good explanation about turbocharging. Also, I think the best solution given the condition of Jon's turbo. I just hope his engine can live up to it.

Thanks a lot for all the great explanation. Thanks for sharing all that info and your knowledge
The causes for oil leak explanation is gold.
What a great, thorough explanation. I am truly impressed. Loved saying "stoichiometric". Haven't heard that since college chemistry classes. Thanks.
That is a really good price for an all new turbo exhaust system. Nice job Area Diesel
Love the box cutter
Large marge sent me ! Great video ! Thank you.

Totally professional and fair!
Turbo is much cheaper than I expected, on the shelf at ADS too!
Great Channel !
Great Service!
I have learned a lot on this video . Now from episode 1 and 2 l see why John likes you guys
I’m not sure if anyone else pointed this out but…Turban is the head cover worn mostly by Muslins while turbine is what you guys work on. So the pronunciation is not the same. Turbochargers have turbines which would be pronounced

beautiful explanation of how this works wow
You guys do great work! have been watching the FarmCraft videos, keep up the great work! Subscribed!
Welcome aboard!
Compared to my Mustang stuff, this solution is a lot less money. I was expecting more. I was pondering it pushing 5k. Nice try on the salvage, I doubt many would have tried that hard. Good work guys!
