I planted a thornless blackberry on the allotment. My plot neighbours thought I was mad, as our site boundary is the railway and lined with wild brambles. The fruit of the cultivar more consistent and a lot easier to harvest. So if you have space I think it’s worth planting a blackberry or say a tayberry as a nice contrast to the other soft fruit. I only have the one plant, as we struggle to use all the soft fruit. I train the new growth the opposite way to last years and each year prune out the old growth. Again a lot easier with a thornless variety.
I can't believe how windy it sounds. I live in the south-east and we haven't had a breath of wind in a long time, and it was such a pleasure to see the sun after at least a week of heavy cloud and mist. Great info on the raspberries.
Thanks Terry a great reminder to tidy the raspberries. I've started leaving a quarter of the previous year's canes to get an early crop. I don't have summer fruiting. Thanks for the log ash tip, I'll be doing that. The best crop i had was after having chickens loose in the fruit enclosure. They did a great job of fertilising and getting rid of grubs. Best wishes to Mrs K ❤
Nice one terry. I have a odd raspberry random one growing in the garden boarders ? I didn't plant it. Take care and give Mrs K a virtual hug from me and Evie
@leewozzashomeveggiegarden thank you Lee, the birds do help propergate our fruits and thank you for your kind words and continued support. Sandra is now doing well.
Those naughty raspberries! Ours keep showing up in places they're not wanted, like my asparagus bed. When we move, I may suggest a root perimeter barrier to stop them creeping. ~ Sandra
Is blowy a meteorological term 😂. My raspberries have been pruned and are popping too but as they are in a giant pot I don’t panic about root travel. Here’s to a fantastic fruit season 🤞. Less shit more sun ☀️, hi to Sandra ❤❤, Ali ☔️🥶🇨🇦
I've got to prune my all gold raspberries yet but they're not dry and dark as yours terry. I think they need to die back a bit more yet! Hope your Christmas was a goodun! Looking forward to new years eve ❤❤.
@terrykingsallotmentgardening my all gold are autumn fruiting, terry. They were bare rooted plants I bought at the end of 2023 and produced hardly anything last year hopefully, they will do better this.❤❤.
Terry I am trying to grow thornless raspberries in grow bags I started with six two look like they died, I bought as bare rooted from a reputable nursery, so this is the first full year, it’s not a great summer but should I expect much fruit the first year? Thanks.
@tassiegirl1991 they will try to reproduce, feed and water and hopefully you will get some, but no harm in removing some flowers to give the plant strength and increase the root growth.
Thank you for a great video. AS raspberries are shallow rooting and shouldn't be planted deeply, is it ok to mulch over with well rotted stable manure please? Cheers. Warmest wishes and hugs to Mrs K. hve a wonderful New Year. Happy growing 🙂
I have a massive thornless blackberry, can i chop the whole plant back really hard ?. I know i'll not get the crop this year but it's got rather unruly 😂.
Have just had a delivery of summer, autumn and middle raspberry cains so we know what’s what lol, not sure on the mid season one, do we treat them like summer or autumn cains if you know can you let me know thanks.

@Canna1d the weather has been awful here and more bad weather come so hopefully all my jobs will be done that I had planned for this year.

I thought you cut out the fruited wood down to the ground leaving this years growth to fruit next year on the blackberries.

@debz_vegplot it will recover, but me personally I would leave a few stems which will encourage new growth.

@reddishrascals6109 that's a new one to me so you may have to assess them or do a comparison if you have more than one, or Google it.
Got you're work cut out with all the fruit Terry
@CoastalGardensNW can't eat it quickly enough so I will be reducing it by half, more white currants, though.....😋😁
