    Well done mate. It does get easier, and the confidence will grow. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from other truckers if you’re struggling, most good drivers will! Keep smiling, drive safe 👍

      Currently training as a class 2 driver and this is my biggest fear, not being sure of things! I’m glad to hear that more experienced drivers will help you learn the ropes! Class 1 is my ultimate goal, and I’d be more than happy to help new drivers come 10 years time!

    A long time ago I went to a Royal Mail depot in East London. The depot had just opened and was virtually empty. I was on a bay and saw another truck arrive in an otherwise empty yard. The driver tried to reverse onto a bay about 6/7 to my left and made a right pig's ear of it. I watched from the cab for about 5 minutes and he got it close several times but couldn't get the trailer exactly right and usually ran out of space before the truck was in a straight line. I went to speak to him...
    "Hello mate - are you by any chance fairly new at this?"
    "Er yeah. Actually this is my first day. They sent me here from Maidstone."
    "Right. Would you like some help?"
    "Er yes please."
    I talked him onto the bay and we got the truck right where it should have been and straight. He looked chuffed, with a big grin. I took the grin right off his face when I said,
    "OK now go round the building and do it again. I'll wait here..."
    He went round and we did it again. And again. I think we did it about 4 times. Then I said to him,
    "This is a glorious opportunity to practice. The depot is empty - what staff there are, are busy, and you can use your time to work out all the little things you need to do with nobody looking and especially taking the piss. Enjoy yourself."
    I said once you get a bit better imagine the bays either side are occupied and go between two imaginary trailers.
    I talked him through a couple of more times and then said I needed to go back to Swindon.
    The last thing I said was if he ever saw someone struggling he should offer to help. I said don't stand and just gawp and make people feel bad - go and offer to help.
    I like to think he made a good job of driving a truck. I certainly hope so...

    Well done on passing your LGV Class 1. I have over 30 years off Class 1 driving experience and the best advice I can give you about reversing is don't be rushed by anyone, take your time. The more time you spend doing reversing the easier it will get, it all comes with practice. If your unsure about a situation get out and have a look first and assess what needs to be done in your mind first. If you have a major blind spot try and find someone to help guide you in, They can keep you informed off what you can't see. Not always someone around to help but it's worth an ask.

      I second this.
      Also, shunt as many times as you need to. And be aware of other drivers in the yard but also forget about what they think of your driving, we were all there once. After a bit you'll get that comfortable in the trucks you'll see a tiny yard and just know instinctively you can 180 it in there and get it back round lol

    I was where you were about 8 months ago. Some will help, and some will watch you struggle. Just stay calm and don't be distracted by "Mr. Chief Class 1 driver" who thinks he knows everything. Just stick with what you have learnt. There is a lot of people in the industry who SERIOUSLY need to go back to school.
    Don't take crap of planners who think they own YOU and Your hours and licence. Because They DONT! stay safe through all negativity the job is good. It's people that spoil it. Stay safe bro and enjoy it.

    Hi Trucker Taf, I'm so glad I got see this video and witness the positivity that you bring to this industry. I've seen all the videos of old drivers dissuading people from becoming a HGV driver and all of the videos of trucking accidents and it put me in a negative, worried headspace but seeing videos by truckers like you and like LukeCinaHGV, that love their jobs, shows me that I could really end up enjoying the job (I want to be a HGV driver) if I adopt the right mindset. Thank you!

    Im a relatively new pass on Class 1, around ten months, but was lucky enough to be able to spend a month shunting before hitting the road which helped massively. I got loads of help and advice from colleagues too which helped boost my confidence. Nonetheless, the first few weeks on the road and new locations was quite nerve wracking. It's a great feeling when it finally clicks and you can assess and deal with any situations you come may come across though :)

      Hi roy
      its nice hearing new people joining are Industry..iv been a class 1 driver for 5 years now and my advice to you would be start off on a class 2 frist to gain some experience behind the wheel as jumping from a car to a class 1 is quiet difficult for most people... you may find class 2 suits you and to be honest the driver shortage is class 2 drivers and not class1 and although im class 1 i drive class 2 as there's not much difference in pay between the two and it's alot less stressful driving class 2

    Good work man. Just take your time, get out and look if you're not sure when reversing. I've 20+ years driving artics I will hop out and look if I need to. Also, there's no such thing as a stupid question, it's easier to ask a question instead of trying fix an expensive mistake. Most drivers will help another driver out, but there's always a few assholes about.

  • @das5813
    @das5813 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A word of advice. When backing under the trailer make sure your fifth wheel coupling is level with the slide plate. Especially with air suspension because I've known other drivers leaving the trailer high when uncoupling which could mean that if you dump all the suspension air out of the unit you could end up being too low and the pin could ride right over the fifth wheel turntable and you'll end up backing the unit cab into the front of the trailer headboard. Then you'll have a pig of a job getting out of it cause the pin will be trapped between the turntable and the rear of the cab.
    Always make sure that the slide plate tou he's the fifth wheel turntable when backing under the trailer.

      Your welcome.
      When I first started driving the pay was absolutely rubbish, I took tipper work at £15.00 a day but after about 15 years I turned it into £1500 a week. I'm not saying everyone should do as me but I never tied myself to one employer or company or agency, trucks are just bits of metal and plastic. I joined the URTU because they'd won a case for a driver who was accused of drinking whilst overnighting on private land at the Red Lion near Bedford, I'll never forget a piece of advice one of their rep gave me, 'Honesty is the mark of a Village Idiot', meaning don't listen to bad advice. I'm retired but still contribute to the Unite Union, get yourself insurance protected and insure your licence and try to pay into a private pension scheme ASAP. Because you've chosen to do one of the most dangerous jobs in one of the worst countries ever.
      You can follow every procedure to the dot, but in the end you'll still need loads of luck to be successful, though I guess you already know that from driving rigids.
      Best of luck.

    @davecoaker6146 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good job, the art of reversing is don't go from lock to lock feed it in gently and take it off and put more on as you go backwards. Always get out if your not sure and have look but getting it as lined up as you can in the first place really helps.

  • @AnIdiotAboard_
    @AnIdiotAboard_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Used to go out with my uncle as a kid in the truck, all my holidays were spent in it. But my uncle, 35 years of driving class I and ADR plus 20 in the military, incredible stuff, as you say you can tell instantly if you can 180 and get out in the end :) But the thing that stood out for me, was how patient the bloke was with new drivers, the worlds most impatient man, would sit for a respectable amount of time, before going out, jumping up and holding the mirror and calming them down and talking them back, more often than not first time, and every time you'd ask him why and his answer was the same, on his first day he reversed the trailer thru the door and wall writing the trailer off, an incident he called character buildering
    When in doubt mate seek help, ask, truckers in my experiance of ALOT of them have been great, its also why i stop in propper truck stops cos there nice people just rolling on thru, they all got time to chat though, jesus christ :)

You'll soon pickup the feel for how the trailer moves etc. Just a word of advice..... when you park... make sure that the unit is 100% in line with the trailer. The forklift drivers will hit the wheel arches if not careful when they load/unload from the side.

      The wheel arches on the unit are specifically built to be hit by forklift drivers so they know when to stop. They will also stop everything and inform you straight away that they have damaged your truck, giving details and stating in writing that it was their fault entirely. This comes in handy when explaining to your transport manager who will always be sympathetic and understanding when it comes to unexplained damage.
      TIP..... Keep your eye on those FLT drivers and good luck.

    Tip: If you ever go there again, spin round, and reverse in from the other side. That saves you reversing in blind side! As a new driver, always try and avoid blind side reversing on your left side, if you can. It will make a it a lot easier for you! Also, if you are ever unsure, ask another driver for help. Most drivers are friendly:)

    Just a quick one mate. Always secure the pump truck upright. Don't leave it on its side like a dead fish because. . A- it will leak oil and fuck it up, and B- it'll slide all over the place and cause damage to the trailer. Small but important advice a transport manager will pick you up on. You can strap it down by using the internal securing rings. Takes 30secs. Also park the unit straight and not on the piss when tipping where possible. Reason being, Matey on forks comes straight in and bang! There go the unit lenses. Fork drivers don't give a fuk generally speaking and all they will do, after smashing the fuk out of the trailer is look at you like a fucking corpse! Not critising, just detailing. Its the little but important things that make a good wagon driver a professional. Best of luck mate. 👍

    Well done and what a brilliant video for your first. For the reversing and to get confidence up try asking the place of work if you could spend a morning just reversing onto bays. On and off for a good couple hours. Eventually it will then become second nature. Also a friend of mine once said don't be a c**t and do a shunt. That for me has taken away some of the nerves when reversing. Hope this helps you 👍👍

    Not ('Anyone can drive it forward, that's easy). 10:00am Saturday morning more than 40 years ago ... left the yard first time ever unaccompanied. Within the first 20 minutes I'd taken all the blue keep left signs down on a smallish roundabout as I tried to negotiate it (wonder if the bloke in the car behind me is still alive, and remembers what he saw me do LOL). Believe me, I learnt about 'trailer cut' that day! Anyway after a good 40 years with one of those strapped to my back (15 years as an instructior later in life); I hung up my ratchet straps and called it a day. Now retired, watching all you youngsters taking your first baby steps .... keep the faith.
    You'll get there in the end. You'll know when you have cracked the reversing puzzle when you get in a rigid for the first time after driving artics for a long while, and put the arse end straight through a 12 ft wall because your mind is so attuned to steering 'the wrong way' in an artic. I did it ... and I can remember thinking at the time, why is the back not coming round as I turned unknowingly into the left mirror trying to get my trailer (which was not there) to come to the right!
    Keep going fellah! With the right attitude, you'll make it! Stay safe. 😃

    Well done fella reversing takes time and it’ll come second nature, make sure you keep your unit aligned with trailer as forklift drivers like to hit things, just also remember as your a professional driver take your time. Keep on trucking plus yorkie bars are on you

    I know it's been a month but I have been to that 1st yard and reversing in there is horrible, when you reverse to the bay the big metal building is in your way so you see nothing of the back of trailer till you are round the metal building haha good job reversing onto that road too its pretty tight good job dude!

    First thing, get a diary, write down every day start,finish,miles,and if you are held up by road conditions put down road number and time so if pulled by disabled, you have proof.
