The character of Winston was the perfect way to get the audience involved in the story. He was just an ordinary working guy, who was involved with this group of rather weird and eccentric paranormal investigators.
The realization on Ray's face when Winston tells him the dead is rising from the grave is a great shot. It really sells the whole scene. You can just see on his face that he is realizing that the big twinkie Egon was talking about could be even more serious than they initially realized.

Egon then compares the containment field to a twinkie. And the building problem to a twinkie thats 30 feet long and 600 pounds.
Growing up in a Christian family (and everyone in my family loves this movie), that scene made the film more spooky since I understood what they were getting at. This scene is so well done and is a conversation piece. There was a special method they use to do in films like this that we don't see these days. A scene like this could have been cut for editing but they left it in. And I'm glad they did.
Perfect early 80s cool. You cannot make a scene like this any more. Two natural characters having an adult conversation portrayed by two great actors. No forced fakeness.

It was only years later re watching this film I understood why scenes like this stood out so much. It was never the special effects or the action or even the jokes that made me fall in love with Ghostbusters. It was the genuine character building moments like this. I cared about these people because I'd spent time with them. Movies, and to an extent audiences, don't seem to get this anymore.
+isthisavalidusername I liked those kind of scenes too as a kid, though I saw Ghostbusters on tv many years after it had been released. Character building scenes are rare nowadays, at least in popular movies and blockbusters, and that is probably due to the fact that most kids have been raised on games or the generic music videos of today. Those are all flash and no substance. Consequently present day movie makers need to cater to their needs because they're the target demographic who'll bring in all the money. The guys in Ghostbusters were average guys that struggled to make ends meet in the big city and actually were far from experts in the paranormal themselves. Trying to catch their first ghosts they're clumsy and almost set the whole place on fire. They don't even know if the proton packs they built are safe to use. One can almost say that they're like children taking their first steps or explorers of the past sailing into unchartered waters not knowing what would face them. Eventually they learn and get better and you as the audience root for them. Scenes such as this one here makes the audience realize that that the Ghostbusters are still just normal guys (well, that's all relative) doing an unusual job, and right now they're facing something they're not entirely sure they may triumph against - hence the talk about armageddon and the Book of Revelations. The average guy as a protagonist in a movie is dead today. It's usually a superhero that can kick anybody's ass without breaking a sweat, who has a supermodel girlfriend and who in the worst case rambles some pseudophilosophical nonsense today's kids think are profound. I kinda like the scene in Zombieland (2009) in which this generational difference is shown. Jesse Eisenberg's character saw Ghostbusters as a kid and loves it so when he sees it at Bill Murray's place he's overjoyed, whereas Abigail Breslin's character can't relate to Ghostbusters at all being much younger and wonders what the fuss is all about over some 80's comedy.
+McLarenMercedes Yeah, the Ghostbusters were four shlubs. The Firehouse is a run down building, the car is a piece of crap before they do it up. All the equipment looks like it was cobbled together from scrap. People forget that part of the story now. They just remember all these things as "iconic". Hopefully we can get back to some happy medium. Action as well as quiet moments. I too am getting tired of all the flash bang wallop of superhero movies. I wanna see some nobodies like me save the day again!
Ray’s moment of realization is honestly pretty chilling. After hunting ghosts slowly became just another job for him, Winston paints their business in a completely different light, and for the first time Ray’s taking a minute to really think “Wait…what exactly are we up against?”
I love this scene, especially Ray's face at the end. Despite being a man of science, it dawns on him that it's possible what's been going on is beyond what science can comprehend.
Ray is actually agnostic. In Ghostbusters 2, he mentioned that he attended a Seminary during childhood. It explains how he can quote the Bible. He also has a PhD in Medieval History and Metallurgy. It is how he know about Ivo Shandor, the eldritch deity Gozer and Vigo the Carpanthian.
I like to think of this as the point Ray started delving deeper into things too dangerous for his own comfort zone. Probably playing catch up where Egon was already neck deep into Tobin's Spirit Guide and other dark cryptologies. Winston deserves more credit, he already saw the big picture!

Same here, Sword of Etro. It's a powerful scene. Ghostbusters isn't actually a comedy in the sense that most people think. The over all story is rather serious (without taking itself too seriously). Damn, I miss 80's film making.

Always got the chills watching this scene, particularly when Ray looks at Winston like, oh shit, that makes sense, how about some music? lol Love it! The score in the background cranks the "what if" meter to like 50.

And like you two above, I remembering getting chills as a child - roughly 5-6 - watching this, not knowing what or who god was. But the eerie factor, of a close up of these two driving in the middle of the night, sent chills up my spine and I didnt even know what the hell they were on about. Any time I watch this - still to this day - sends me back to '88

He remembers the old testament...the dead coming back to life, hell on earth...and it then occurs to Ray that the apocalypse is upon them...ghosts appearing everywhere, chances of Gozer being resurrected, its as if in the back of his head he knew that Armageddon was coming. He then decided to change the subject and turn on the music.
This is legitimately one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Obviously I didn't pay much attention to it as a kid, but I really appreciate it now upon re-watching it. These characters feel like real people having a real discussion, and their reactions feel appropriate and human.
my favorite part is at the end "the dead is rising from the grave", Ray just makes that face... he just that question of "if this is the rapture... then... are we fighting... Him?" this I think is one of the only pure horror moments in the film, but subtly so. see this flick manages to be scary with its freaky monsters but it is always ironically so. sure we have frightening scene where Dana is taken by Zule was messed up but here we have something more mundane and thoughtful... this is honestly where the Lovecraftian influence really shows its face here and not in the obvious way but the way it really counts. where they realize that this isn't just your average haunted house film, or a monster of the week television show. Ray realizes that they might be fighting a real fight that they can't win... that alone is something so ultimately terrifying that few straight, unfunny horror stories often forget to put.
One thing that ties it more to the "end of the world" theory and why Ray looks like that, is that the original script actually had them fight Ivo Shandor played by Paul Reubin who declined to appear cos of conflicting schedules (I think he was doing the Pee Wee Herman film, but he did appear in Blues Brothers as one of the waiters that serve Elwood and Jake Blues when they go to get Mr Fabulous) and that the ghostbusters were supposed to have fought him instead of Zuul and that Ivo would have made several appearances in the film and the first was the hotel where Slimer went to and that Shandor wanted to bring about the end of the world again.

In multiple zombie movies they quote " when there is no more room in hell , the dead will walk the earth" In day of the dead the helicopter pilot says " we are being punished by the creator, he visited a curse on us, maybe he didn't want to see us blow ourselves up and put a big hole in the sky, maybe he figured we were getting too big for our britches trying to figure his shit out"
It's Ray's look that makes the viewer really take notice. Love that look he gives when he his excitement disappears and he actually gets scared for a moment.
Akroyd once said that viewers had identified with Hudson as Winston because he came in as an outsider without knowing anything about the ghost world. Akroyd was right Winston was a wonderfully added team player.
Close up shot for a close, intimate conversation about the apocalypse. One of them may be a scientist, and they might catch ghosts for a living, but they're still just average New Yorkers who, in their heads, are just doing a job. Two, normal men shooting the shit about their situation, realizing that what they see as a simple job is actually near and dear to the heart of the apocalypse. The camera pans out to show the scale of their implications; the world ending, with Manhattan at the epicenter. It emphasizes how small and normal they are in the grand scheme of things, creating a juxtaposition between the scale of their actions and the scale of the consequences if they fail. Just because it's a comedy, doesn't mean you can't have really strong dramatic elements like this.
This is my favorite scene in the movie. I think more movies nowadays should have quiet character moments like this. It really gives the film more nuance.
I found out not too long ago Winston at some point was overlooked or even seen as a filler character by some fans and it breaks my heart. I've always loved Winston, since I was a kid, because of his down to Earth perspective and keeping the others grounded. I think Ray was so deep in his scientific theories and perspective that it took Winston's simple observation from a place of emotion to get him to see a new element.
I always saw the GB as a team of 4 guys: Ray, Egon, Peter and Winston And I actually find it quite amazing that a character which is introduced almost halfway into the movie gets to be established as a main character That needed some clever writing an a good actor
This film is just too good. The characters, the cast, the script, everything. The score alone gives me chills. I can only pray that the upcoming film will do it justice, especially after the piss-poor excuse for a remake.
It's a funny thing this scene. It begin with Winston asking about Ray's beliefs towards Jesus and God. Ray is aware of them, but doesn't believe based on his line: "Never met him." And their chat on judgement day and the book of revelations even has him only think of it as myth. That is until Winston brings up the that due to the fact their job is dealing with the rising of the dead, that this "myth" is more than likely a real thing. Instantly, Ray is washed over by a sense of reality, waking him up. Many regard this film as an atheist's comedy, but it isn't. Not because of this scene, but because Ghostbusters is based in reality much to our own where the impossible is possible once we dig deeper and one must be open to minded to the possibilities such as God, Jesus, and the supernatural. Winston isn't a scientist or engineer or psychologist, he's the every man and his faith shows that, as someone in the comments said, "HE GET'S IT" and it's 1 of many reasons why I love Ghostbusters.
+pablolara125 In Ray's defense I'd be more likely to believe the ghost and demons where some kind of interdimensional creatures that arose through natural means instead of dead spirits or gods.
thebatmanover9000 True, but then again, there have been occasions the ghosts and demons were once living humans. Plus, taken the IDW canon into mind, apparently God does exist, the devil exists, and so do Heaven and Hell. I think once you bring in the supernatural, and the fact many of these myths of ancient beings or legends of ghosts are sometimes real, its more than likely God exists in the Ghostbusters universe. Plus, Ray's progression through various stories has shown that he is probably the most open-minded when it comes into comparison with Peter and Egon, as is Winston even though both approach it differently.
+pablolara125 What's great about this scene is Winston doesn't reveal any new information. He just provides a new perspective from which to view things. Plus they set it up well, you can tell Ray's probably mulled over Revelations before.
TheaterPup And that's the cool thing. He's read it before, and yet somehow it is a "Revelation" when the simple everyday man in Winston points out there work is a reaction to the dead rising from the grave.

I like how the camera slowly pans away from the Etco 1. It reinforces what Winston talking about. By making them look small It really makes you feel the gravity of the situation
As a kid, this scene always stood out to me as being special. The fact that they're driving at night adds to the mystery...reminds me of my dad driving me home at night and seeing the shadows flash on the car's interior. And I love how Ray nervously puts the radio on to break the tension.
Finally went to New York just this past year. Even though much has changed since the 80's I got to see a few places where they filmed. God the 80's in NYC must have been so fun. Saturday night live was still good, the movies were amazing and the soundtrack was haunting.

i was lucky enough to have gone down to the city a buncha times during the 90's. holy shit it's like a 180. yea there was crime but damn it had a cool gritty feel to it. Now it's a damn tourist location
TONS of shots of New York City before 9/11 include the twin towers. For every conversation about revelations you have a dozen random establishing shots. It's a shame they're gone though either way.
Isaiah 30:25 And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. Wow never thought of that! You just made that scene with Ray and Winston and the twin towers all the more creepy. Bravo!
This scene, the comics and the game really gave Winston quite the brilliant Characterization. Despite popular poles, these factors are why he is my favourite Ghostbuster.
Further proof that while Winston wasn't an official scientist, he still offered a different perspective towards busting ghosts that made him unique to the group.
+LyleVSXyle Some people think Winston was useless but it's cause of this other point of view that we can connect to the ghostbusters think about it as a clever plot point - Ray and Egon are too nerdy to understand and Venkman is too laidback and relaxed to sudenly ask questions and worry in the third act but with Winston the film is explained to us without the 3 other characters being dumbed down or changed for this.
Ruston Ashbury You know, what made Winston so good, was that he was the most relate-able out of the four. He was a regular dude looking for a job. He didn't need to be street-smart, he was just a normal guy to balance the other guys.
Ray hits the nail on the head. Every ancient religion does have its own version of the end, and there’s a reason for that, as well as there’s a reason that humanity, even primitive cultures, have a form of spirituality, a longing toward something greater and unseen. The creator speaks to us all in different ways.
I love this scene SO much. for one reason it shows how Ray, though INCREDIBLY smart... he is Science/Book Smart... he see's Ghosts rising from the Grave and it never even dawns on him that it's something SPIRITUAL... i think thats one reason they're even able to catch the ghosts... they believe so hardcore in their Tech it just, works.
That was kind of the genesis of the movie. There's always been this thing about the supernatural/magic being able to beat technology, so the idea was, "what if we took it in reverse?"
He knows it is spiritual, but that which is spiritual could exist in a world without God. It could be explained in different terms. Turns out it wasn't the end of the world, was it? They beat Gozer.
@@The_Gallowglass True! But Gozer could be one of many fallen angels to come. 4 others mentioned in Revelation 9:13-16 would be released, with 200 million horsemen to slay a third of men. In movie perspective Gozer was a small part in the grand scheme of things, if the writers wanted to go that route.

The best scene, best dialogue and acting in this film. This scene was the turning point where it went from a straight, fun comedy, to an epic horror adventure flick!
If anyone gets a chance to read the book, Winston has a deeper, weird and meta philosophy of what's going on. He theorizes like the bible said that in the end times, the dead would be rising from their graves. He then states that they are catching the dead and putting them in little casket shaped boxes of sorts (the ghost trap), all while driving around in a hearse.
I like the fact that Ray is brought back to earth so to speak by Winston when Winston says "Maybe the only reason why we've been working so hard is because the dead HAVE been rising!"
Just watched this film for (basically) the first time...... Wow.... after the laughs and comedy, I had to literally pause the movie look out the window and reflect after this scene!
The simplicity of this scene always stuck with me. Plus seeing the old pale blue hue of New York City around that time. Gritty yet majestic. The concrete jungle.
This scene is great. Not only do you never see anything like this any more, it's symbolic. Ray's mind is entirely wrapped around a job while they do it, Winston takes a step back, looks at what could match it, (which is his faith) but Ray, who is someone doubtful of a God, see's how it matches too. You can see his expression change as he immediately asks Winston for music so he can try to see a way that's not that.
I do love this scene; it sets a deeply melancholic tone for much of the rest of the film, that is wonderfully counterbalanced by the comedy and the feel-good ending. You just don't see these kinds of convos in film anymore.
This scene even resonated with me as a kid too. It took a silly fun comedy sci/fi movie and made it an epic and bad ass FILM. This is such an awesome film of so many genres. (Comedy, horror, action, thriller/chiller, even romance).
I'm very glad to see this scene on TH-cam. Ghostbusters came out when I was 7 years old and the soundtrack scenes make this classic all the better. Kudos MikeyRomero
I love this scene. I remember watching this movie as a kid and this scene brought so much realism to the film to me. Such a quick scene, I almost wished it went on a little longer.
Such a brilliant scene, played deadly serious in the middle of a comedy movie. Topping it off is that marvelous helicopter shot revealing the NYC skyline, an all-timer.
I love this scene, nowadays there would be complaints about the bible being mentioned, but I love how this works it seamlessly into the plot (even if the verse is actually from revelation 6:12)
I loved the subject at hand but I'm going to comment on the superb acting. The little nudge/tap that Ernie gives Dan and repeats "Judgment Day". That is such a real life interaction and I wonder if it even was in the script. In today's movies, no one would have time for such nuances but this makes it feel like you truly are eavesdropping on a real life conversation and not a movie scene. I have loved this movie ever since I was a little girl and I always will. 💞💞💞
I love this scene. That subtle creepy music with that beautiful far out night shot of the ecto1. The line delivery. The way the music ramps up right on que. Fantastic scene.
Love in Afterlife how now Egon has the verses all over his property and Ray has a tattoo on his arm of the same verse(s). Their trails of physics and science eventually led them to a place they never thought it would.
When i was a kid i always imagined me sitting in the backseat. Back then i was a little too young to understand what they were talking about or maybe i just didn't really gave much attention. I just pretended i was there with them and just a part of the team and then that song after they finish talking...aww memories :)
Yeah...I had to come back to see this one scene too. I didn't get this scene as much when I saw it as a kid. I get it more now. I could imagine being in the back too in between calls. I'd probably be asking you, "Psstt...hey! You got some gum? I have no idea what they're talking about, but it sounds bad. Need something to get my mind off of it."
What really gets me for this scene is how it opens, with the ECTO-1 driving down some street in NYC on late nite patrol, with some spooky keys on soundtrack.. I've lived in Dallas most of my life so I'm only used to relatively humble little cities (with better football teams than the Giants, Jets, or Bills, Go Cowboys..), but our darkness feels the same.. you see the Ghostbusters out at that hour with the roof lit up, you know something's up.. something big.
Everything about this scene blends perfectly together..The conversation,music,scenery and such.As short a scene it is it is one of my favorites in the movie.
This scene is one of the best in the movies even the spookiest when Winston points out something that might be going over their heads at the time. He's not a scientist (at least not that we're told - his backstory is a lot more complicated than we're led to believe) but he points out something that Ray upon hearing realizes he might be right, that something really bad is about to happen.

This conversation reminds me that of all Ghostbusters members, Winston is the only member with a spiritual faith. I remember that I read Ghostbusters novelization and if I'm not wrong it is explained that Winston came from a devout Christian Baptist family. He himself is a devout believer. It kinda interesting that their team has a combination of a scientific and spiritual mind.
Even more so that in Afterlife.. now all of them are on that same page. Egon had it plastered all over the place and Ray had it as a tattoo on his arm.
As a kid back in late 80's - early 90's, when I watch this movie, I remember how this scene went over my head. Fast forward to today as an adult, this scene is as huge as the proton pack scenes. The reboot Abomination of 2016's entire movie didn't stand a chance on this 1 minute 20 seconds scene alone from the classic.
What an amazingly prophetic scene - their taking about religion then cut to a shot of the twin towers, which would of course later be destroyed by religious zealots. Amazing scene.

The guys in Ghostbusters were average guys that struggled to make ends meet in the big city and actually were far from experts in the paranormal themselves. Trying to catch their first ghosts they're clumsy and almost set the whole place on fire. They don't even know if the proton packs they built are safe to use. One can almost say that they're like children taking their first steps or explorers of the past sailing into unchartered waters not knowing what would face them.
Eventually they learn and get better and you as the audience root for them.
Scenes such as this one here makes the audience realize that that the Ghostbusters are still just normal guys (well, that's all relative) doing an unusual job, and right now they're facing something they're not entirely sure they may triumph against - hence the talk about armageddon and the Book of Revelations.
The average guy as a protagonist in a movie is dead today. It's usually a superhero that can kick anybody's ass without breaking a sweat, who has a supermodel girlfriend and who in the worst case rambles some pseudophilosophical nonsense today's kids think are profound.
I kinda like the scene in Zombieland (2009) in which this generational difference is shown. Jesse Eisenberg's character saw Ghostbusters as a kid and loves it so when he sees it at Bill Murray's place he's overjoyed, whereas Abigail Breslin's character can't relate to Ghostbusters at all being much younger and wonders what the fuss is all about over some 80's comedy.
+McLarenMercedes Yeah, the Ghostbusters were four shlubs. The Firehouse is a run down building, the car is a piece of crap before they do it up. All the equipment looks like it was cobbled together from scrap. People forget that part of the story now. They just remember all these things as "iconic".
Hopefully we can get back to some happy medium. Action as well as quiet moments. I too am getting tired of all the flash bang wallop of superhero movies. I wanna see some nobodies like me save the day again!

Ray’s moment of realization is honestly pretty chilling.
After hunting ghosts slowly became just another job for him, Winston paints their business in a completely different light, and for the first time Ray’s taking a minute to really think “Wait…what exactly are we up against?”
Things you don't see in movies anymore: --Main characters discussing religion respectfully.
You hardly ever see normal people discussing it respectfully.

I love this scene, especially Ray's face at the end. Despite being a man of science, it dawns on him that it's possible what's been going on is beyond what science can comprehend.
Well, he's a man of science, but he's also the occult/folklore/mythology guy.
Ray is actually agnostic. In Ghostbusters 2, he mentioned that he attended a Seminary during childhood. It explains how he can quote the Bible. He also has a PhD in Medieval History and Metallurgy. It is how he know about Ivo Shandor, the eldritch deity Gozer and Vigo the Carpanthian.

I like to think of this as the point Ray started delving deeper into things too dangerous for his own comfort zone. Probably playing catch up where Egon was already neck deep into Tobin's Spirit Guide and other dark cryptologies. Winston deserves more credit, he already saw the big picture!

Same here, Sword of Etro. It's a powerful scene. Ghostbusters isn't actually a comedy in the sense that most people think. The over all story is rather serious (without taking itself too seriously). Damn, I miss 80's film making.

But the eerie factor, of a close up of these two driving in the middle of the night, sent chills up my spine and I didnt even know what the hell they were on about.

He remembers the old testament...the dead coming back to life, hell on earth...and it then occurs to Ray that the apocalypse is upon them...ghosts appearing everywhere, chances of Gozer being resurrected, its as if in the back of his head he knew that Armageddon was coming. He then decided to change the subject and turn on the music.
This is legitimately one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Obviously I didn't pay much attention to it as a kid, but I really appreciate it now upon re-watching it. These characters feel like real people having a real discussion, and their reactions feel appropriate and human.
This scene always stuck with me even as a little kid. Ray's reaction to Winston's comment on the dead rising is excellent. What a great movie.

my favorite part is at the end "the dead is rising from the grave", Ray just makes that face... he just that question of "if this is the rapture... then... are we fighting... Him?"
this I think is one of the only pure horror moments in the film, but subtly so. see this flick manages to be scary with its freaky monsters but it is always ironically so. sure we have frightening scene where Dana is taken by Zule was messed up but here we have something more mundane and thoughtful... this is honestly where the Lovecraftian influence really shows its face here and not in the obvious way but the way it really counts. where they realize that this isn't just your average haunted house film, or a monster of the week television show. Ray realizes that they might be fighting a real fight that they can't win... that alone is something so ultimately terrifying that few straight, unfunny horror stories often forget to put.
One thing that ties it more to the "end of the world" theory and why Ray looks like that, is that the original script actually had them fight Ivo Shandor played by Paul Reubin who declined to appear cos of conflicting schedules (I think he was doing the Pee Wee Herman film, but he did appear in Blues Brothers as one of the waiters that serve Elwood and Jake Blues when they go to get Mr Fabulous) and that the ghostbusters were supposed to have fought him instead of Zuul and that Ivo would have made several appearances in the film and the first was the hotel where Slimer went to and that Shandor wanted to bring about the end of the world again.

It's Ray's look that makes the viewer really take notice. Love that look he gives when he his excitement disappears and he actually gets scared for a moment.
Well, you got the man of science suddenly realizing there might be more than just science involved here.
Akroyd once said that viewers had identified with Hudson as Winston because he came in as an outsider without knowing anything about the ghost world. Akroyd was right Winston was a wonderfully added team player.
Seeing the Twin Towers in the background is a gut punch.

THIS SCENE ALONE is the reason why the Ghostbusters 2016 won't match up.
No one in the new movie could pull off a scene like this or would even try.
Truth beholds even a mystery, but the dead has risen and Life is more abundant because of it.
LOADS of scenes in this great original 1984 film are better than the remake
Close up shot for a close, intimate conversation about the apocalypse. One of them may be a scientist, and they might catch ghosts for a living, but they're still just average New Yorkers who, in their heads, are just doing a job. Two, normal men shooting the shit about their situation, realizing that what they see as a simple job is actually near and dear to the heart of the apocalypse.
The camera pans out to show the scale of their implications; the world ending, with Manhattan at the epicenter. It emphasizes how small and normal they are in the grand scheme of things, creating a juxtaposition between the scale of their actions and the scale of the consequences if they fail.
Just because it's a comedy, doesn't mean you can't have really strong dramatic elements like this.
This is my favorite scene in the movie. I think more movies nowadays should have quiet character moments like this. It really gives the film more nuance.
I found out not too long ago Winston at some point was overlooked or even seen as a filler character by some fans and it breaks my heart. I've always loved Winston, since I was a kid, because of his down to Earth perspective and keeping the others grounded. I think Ray was so deep in his scientific theories and perspective that it took Winston's simple observation from a place of emotion to get him to see a new element.
I always saw the GB as a team of 4 guys: Ray, Egon, Peter and Winston
And I actually find it quite amazing that a character which is introduced almost halfway into the movie gets to be established as a main character

This film is just too good. The characters, the cast, the script, everything. The score alone gives me chills. I can only pray that the upcoming film will do it justice, especially after the piss-poor excuse for a remake.
I love the end of the clip. An early evening cruise through NYC in the early/mid 1980s.... something I'll never be able to do.

It's a funny thing this scene. It begin with Winston asking about Ray's beliefs towards Jesus and God. Ray is aware of them, but doesn't believe based on his line: "Never met him." And their chat on judgement day and the book of revelations even has him only think of it as myth. That is until Winston brings up the that due to the fact their job is dealing with the rising of the dead, that this "myth" is more than likely a real thing. Instantly, Ray is washed over by a sense of reality, waking him up. Many regard this film as an atheist's comedy, but it isn't. Not because of this scene, but because Ghostbusters is based in reality much to our own where the impossible is possible once we dig deeper and one must be open to minded to the possibilities such as God, Jesus, and the supernatural. Winston isn't a scientist or engineer or psychologist, he's the every man and his faith shows that, as someone in the comments said, "HE GET'S IT" and it's 1 of many reasons why I love Ghostbusters.

thebatmanover9000 True, but then again, there have been occasions the ghosts and demons were once living humans. Plus, taken the IDW canon into mind, apparently God does exist, the devil exists, and so do Heaven and Hell. I think once you bring in the supernatural, and the fact many of these myths of ancient beings or legends of ghosts are sometimes real, its more than likely God exists in the Ghostbusters universe. Plus, Ray's progression through various stories has shown that he is probably the most open-minded when it comes into comparison with Peter and Egon, as is Winston even though both approach it differently.

I like how the camera slowly pans away from the Etco 1. It reinforces what Winston talking about. By making them look small It really makes you feel the gravity of the situation
Ray might not believe but he does show respect when it comes to the issue. Man knows his stuff.
As a kid, this scene always stood out to me as being special. The fact that they're driving at night adds to the mystery...reminds me of my dad driving me home at night and seeing the shadows flash on the car's interior. And I love how Ray nervously puts the radio on to break the tension.
Finally went to New York just this past year. Even though much has changed since the 80's I got to see a few places where they filmed. God the 80's in NYC must have been so fun. Saturday night live was still good, the movies were amazing and the soundtrack was haunting.
Mixed bag. Crime was very, very high in NYC at the time. It's gone way down since.

This scene, the comics and the game really gave Winston quite the brilliant Characterization. Despite popular poles, these factors are why he is my favourite Ghostbuster.
A perfect end to the second act and a great little breather before the final action really ramps things up.
Further proof that while Winston wasn't an official scientist, he still offered a different perspective towards busting ghosts that made him unique to the group.
+LyleVSXyle Some people think Winston was useless but it's cause of this other point of view that we can connect to the ghostbusters think about it as a clever plot point - Ray and Egon are too nerdy to understand and Venkman is too laidback and relaxed to sudenly ask questions and worry in the third act but with Winston the film is explained to us without the 3 other characters being dumbed down or changed for this.

Ruston Ashbury You know, what made Winston so good, was that he was the most relate-able out of the four. He was a regular dude looking for a job. He didn't need to be street-smart, he was just a normal guy to balance the other guys.
Ray hits the nail on the head. Every ancient religion does have its own version of the end, and there’s a reason for that, as well as there’s a reason that humanity, even primitive cultures, have a form of spirituality, a longing toward something greater and unseen. The creator speaks to us all in different ways.

I love this scene SO much. for one reason it shows how Ray, though INCREDIBLY smart... he is Science/Book Smart... he see's Ghosts rising from the Grave and it never even dawns on him that it's something SPIRITUAL... i think thats one reason they're even able to catch the ghosts... they believe so hardcore in their Tech it just, works.
That was kind of the genesis of the movie. There's always been this thing about the supernatural/magic being able to beat technology, so the idea was, "what if we took it in reverse?"
He knows it is spiritual, but that which is spiritual could exist in a world without God. It could be explained in different terms. Turns out it wasn't the end of the world, was it? They beat Gozer.
@@The_Gallowglass True! But Gozer could be one of many fallen angels to come. 4 others mentioned in Revelation 9:13-16 would be released, with 200 million horsemen to slay a third of men. In movie perspective Gozer was a small part in the grand scheme of things, if the writers wanted to go that route.

This is awesome. A conversation between two charismatic characters. It does more for the movie than a ghost scene would ever do

This was the heart of Ghostbusters. Ironically one of the people discussing it, is the heart of the Ghostbusters.
The best scene, best dialogue and acting in this film. This scene was the turning point where it went from a straight, fun comedy, to an epic horror adventure flick!
If anyone gets a chance to read the book, Winston has a deeper, weird and meta philosophy of what's going on. He theorizes like the bible said that in the end times, the dead would be rising from their graves. He then states that they are catching the dead and putting them in little casket shaped boxes of sorts (the ghost trap), all while driving around in a hearse.
I loved this scene because Winsten showed what he brought to the team and it blends well.
This scene is is brilliant gave me chills.
I just love the scene at the end: cruising over the Manhattan Bridge at dusk with groovy funk music playing.
Another reason this scene is brilliant: it provides a natural breath and dividing line before Act III.
I like the fact that Ray is brought back to earth so to speak by Winston when Winston says "Maybe the only reason why we've been working so hard is because the dead HAVE been rising!"
Just watched this film for (basically) the first time...... Wow.... after the laughs and comedy, I had to literally pause the movie look out the window and reflect after this scene!

The simplicity of this scene always stuck with me. Plus seeing the old pale blue hue of New York City around that time. Gritty yet majestic. The concrete jungle.
This scene is great. Not only do you never see anything like this any more, it's symbolic. Ray's mind is entirely wrapped around a job while they do it, Winston takes a step back, looks at what could match it, (which is his faith) but Ray, who is someone doubtful of a God, see's how it matches too. You can see his expression change as he immediately asks Winston for music so he can try to see a way that's not that.
Awesome scene. Sometimes it really takes someone from the outside, to see the situation more clearly? lols.

I do love this scene; it sets a deeply melancholic tone for much of the rest of the film, that is wonderfully counterbalanced by the comedy and the feel-good ending. You just don't see these kinds of convos in film anymore.

This scene even resonated with me as a kid too. It took a silly fun comedy sci/fi movie and made it an epic and bad ass FILM. This is such an awesome film of so many genres. (Comedy, horror, action, thriller/chiller, even romance).

Such a brilliant scene, played deadly serious in the middle of a comedy movie. Topping it off is that marvelous helicopter shot revealing the NYC skyline, an all-timer.

I loved the subject at hand but I'm going to comment on the superb acting. The little nudge/tap that Ernie gives Dan and repeats "Judgment Day". That is such a real life interaction and I wonder if it even was in the script. In today's movies, no one would have time for such nuances but this makes it feel like you truly are eavesdropping on a real life conversation and not a movie scene. I have loved this movie ever since I was a little girl and I always will. 💞💞💞

Love in Afterlife how now Egon has the verses all over his property and Ray has a tattoo on his arm of the same verse(s). Their trails of physics and science eventually led them to a place they never thought it would.
This scene foreshadows the things to come. Classic scene with the 1983-84 Manhattan skyline in the distance. Brings a sense of realism to the movie.
When i was a kid i always imagined me sitting in the backseat. Back then i was a little too young to understand what they were talking about or maybe i just didn't really gave much attention. I just pretended i was there with them and just a part of the team and then that song after they finish talking...aww memories :)
Yeah...I had to come back to see this one scene too. I didn't get this scene as much when I saw it as a kid. I get it more now. I could imagine being in the back too in between calls. I'd probably be asking you, "Psstt...hey! You got some gum? I have no idea what they're talking about, but it sounds bad. Need something to get my mind off of it."
What really gets me for this scene is how it opens, with the ECTO-1 driving down some street in NYC on late nite patrol, with some spooky keys on soundtrack.. I've lived in Dallas most of my life so I'm only used to relatively humble little cities (with better football teams than the Giants, Jets, or Bills, Go Cowboys..), but our darkness feels the same..
you see the Ghostbusters out at that hour with the roof lit up, you know something's up.. something big.
Everything about this scene blends perfectly together..The conversation,music,scenery and such.As short a scene it is it is one of my favorites in the movie.

This scene is one of the best in the movies even the spookiest when Winston points out something that might be going over their heads at the time. He's not a scientist (at least not that we're told - his backstory is a lot more complicated than we're led to believe) but he points out something that Ray upon hearing realizes he might be right, that something really bad is about to happen.

This conversation reminds me that of all Ghostbusters members, Winston is the only member with a spiritual faith. I remember that I read Ghostbusters novelization and if I'm not wrong it is explained that Winston came from a devout Christian Baptist family. He himself is a devout believer. It kinda interesting that their team has a combination of a scientific and spiritual mind.
Even more so that in Afterlife.. now all of them are on that same page. Egon had it plastered all over the place and Ray had it as a tattoo on his arm.
As a kid back in late 80's - early 90's, when I watch this movie, I remember how this scene went over my head. Fast forward to today as an adult, this scene is as huge as the proton pack scenes. The reboot Abomination of 2016's entire movie didn't stand a chance on this 1 minute 20 seconds scene alone from the classic.

What an amazingly prophetic scene - their taking about religion then cut to a shot of the twin towers, which would of course later be destroyed by religious zealots. Amazing scene.
