    Have been watching your videos for some time Scott. They are all very revealing as to what lies behind jazz harmony and how to improvise. Will keep watching. A lot of other people presenting this kind of material on TH-cam, but yours is one of the best because it helps you believe you can do this stuff. Robert Parker Alto player from the UK. ❤

    Scott I’m a developing trumpet player and I’ve been watching your videos because you’re great at talking straight about learning jazz improvisation theory and practice. Do you (or anyone else for that matter) have any suggestions for any TH-camrs that cover trumpet specific topics regarding learning to play jazz the way you have saxophone specific videos?

  • @cdmbsax

    This is the clearest approach to this subject. It will require a mastery of the Nashville numbering system and understanding tone resolution but the V-I is a great place. I am practicing * Oleo , * There Will Never be another you, * There is no greater love,
    and * How high is the moon for school. Do you have a video on practice patterns for chords on chord solos?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  ปีที่แล้ว

      All great tunes, and lots of 6-2-5-1 chord progressions in those tunes! I actually don't do the practice patterns approach, aside from just straight chord outlines. I think it is a better practice to practice improv solos using chord tones, start off keeping it simple - maybe only do 4-8 measures at a time. With the chord outline solos, you are also going to be hearing how voice leading works.

    Great video!!!!! Question Are saying the tonal center are D G C F Bb E A and you are emphasizing these notes when improvising??
    Thanks

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  ปีที่แล้ว

      The first tonal center if F... D G C are the supporting chords. Bb is also in F, but is tranistioning to the next tonal center of A... B E are the supporting chords for that tonal center.

    Scott but how do you know what is the ONE. Without listening or looking at the first and last cord?… Tom

  • @saxman3336

    Scott, what it the Progression is Dm7, G7, CM7, FM7 like in Autumn Leaves, is it then II, V7, IM7, IV?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  ปีที่แล้ว

      YES! Exactly. It is a 2-5-1-4 and the 4 transitions to the relative minor for a minor 2-5-1. So in Autumn Leaves, you have two tonal centers in the A section that both have the same key signature, because they are relative major and minor.

  • @andyrandall8913
    @andyrandall8913 ปีที่แล้ว

    Terrific content really well explained. Just one question... when looking at pop/rock/dance tracks which are often in minor keys, how do you avoid the temptation to see the initial D minor chord supported matching key signature and think the tonal centre is D Minor?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Andy! In a pop tune, it's a lot easier to hear the tonic because there aren't as many chords and they aren't shifting around so much. In regards to that D- minor chord, when you see the key signature of 1b (Bb) you automatically think is it Fmaj or Dmin? So then you take a look at the supporting chords & melody to see which one it is. If this were D minor, it would most likely have an Amaj chord somewhere near it, or leading to it. If you see that min7, dom7, maj7 right next to each other in this song, that should be ringing some alarm bells that that is a 251 - which would give you a tonal center. Hope that helps!

  • @aljerones99
    @aljerones99 ปีที่แล้ว

    As usual, Scott, I still learn or reinforce something when I watch your videos. My biggest takeaway was the mode a chord might be using. That never occurred to me until now.
    What I struggle with is playing each chord in each bar, despite knowing the key center. Though the chord tones of an Fmaj7 is different from a Cdom7, we are STILL expected to shift from chord to chord to play a line that defines the song and I find that challenging.
    How do you do this. Is it just years of practice/experience or is there more to it?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Thanks for the kind words. The easiest way to do it is to practice the chord outline solos. If you do that for about a week, you will get the sound in your ears, and you will automatically gravitate toward it when you are soloing. The more you do it, the more it will happen. If you struggle with using all of the chord tones, just start with the root and come up with a rhythm. Then when that feels good add the 3rd. Then add the 5th. And finally add the 7th. Also, don't practice the chords to an entire song. Start with 4 measures at a time, or one tonal center. Keep adding to it.

    On Green Dolphin Street?

    • @davidcox8961
      @davidcox8961 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Miles. Green Dolphin gives me trouble when it comes time to improvise. You too eh? I've recently learned how much music can be made just using the roots and 3rds. That's what I did last week with the tune United. This week I'll add the 5ths and 7ths. I'm gonna do this with Dolphin next. Cheers mate!

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Green Dolphin Street also has tonal centers, but they work in a different way for the first part of it. For the first 4 measures, you go from Major to Minor. Then you do a chromatic walk down to make it back to the original key. The B section is just 2 different 251s. The C section is 2 different minor 251s followed by a 36251 turnaround. So in a tune like this, you want to analyze how the tonal centers are related/working together. This is a really fun tune to solo over!!!
